S3 E3 episode has dropped!

Ok yes it’s late but we’ve had some stuff going on. We will get into that but also introduce our two fantastic student guests who join us from UVA and WashU to discuss voting and civic engagement on campus. I know we’re all politically exhausted but these two made it fun. Join us!

Season 3 Episode 2 dropped this week.

But wait!

RECRUITMENT NOTICE!! Before you read episode details below we’re looking for parents who have supported their students through the process of transferring. Let me know if that’s you and if you want to hang with us.

Parents- we need some COACHING! Watching a college student flop around from afar is going to give
every parent feelings, but guess what- we parents are flopping around too. And Mindy and Leslie are no better than anyone else in this regard. Join us for a discussion with therapist Kara Friedman who specializes is working with teens and their families during this dynamic time in our lives. This week, Kara will bring some incredible insider information directly from some the mouths of her teen clients. By asking them “what do you want your parents to know about your college experience?” she will help us decode what is going on inside the
brains of our students at a distance.
Kara Friedman is a Licensed Professional Counselor who helps teens and women struggling with anxiety feel calm and confident when life is "out of control." With more than twenty years of experience, she has seen her clients learn new coping skills, make fundamental changes and have long-lasting results. Kara

Now that everyone is safely on board at their colleges and universities it is time to flip the page to the next big moment on the calendar for new college parents: Parents and Family Weekend. As with everything, this is usually one of the first trips back for college parents, and it comes with some unexpected complications and things to consider. Come get your expectations appropriately set as Mindy and Leslie welcome a fellow college parent to a discussion around what parents weekend is, what it isn’t, and how to avoid messing the whole thing up. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theparentpage/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theparentpage/support

Parent pages are heating up again as everyone looks at their watches and realizes tempus fugit. We know your anxiety is tick tick ticking away in your heads like the tell tale heart. Co-host Leslie wrote this one three years ago while watching the great August drop off happening right outside her door on campus. Do yourselves a favor and start desensitizing yourselves now. And remember- everything is FINE.

Season 2 Episode 4: The Monthly Budget Conundrum

This week’s episode comes with all the disclaimers we can drum up. Monthly budgets are extremely student-specific and highly dependent upon the financial situation of each family. There is no one size fits all approach to this one except in the PLANNING. You and your student have to have a plan. In fact this podcast should just be renamed The Parent Planning Page Podcast.

Join Mindy and Leslie as they navigate this topic with the help of CPA and fellow battle-tested college parent Karen Smoller. Let Karen’s personal and professional experience can help you leap-frog a number of questions and wrong turns as you work through your mental check list of things to stress out about.

As usual, share your favorite parent page stories with us at theparentpagepodcast.wordpess.com (where you can also click a little button to support us), on twitter , insta or here.

And remember-the kids are fine. Everything's fine.

19/05/2022

Big question that always seems to come up: Should you bring a bike to school? Well like with most things, the answer is always....maybe?? It depends heavily on the environment of your school and whether it is a bike-friendly or even bike-useful environment. If you think it might be, then ask yourself.

Really???

Do I REALLY think I'm going to make use of a bike at school? I mean- there's winter. And there's traffic. And there's walking with friends. And of course (and I'm sorry this is just the reality here) UBER (Lyft...or whatever...).

I mean it's one thing to say YES THIS IS REALLY GOING TO BE MY PRIMARY METHOD OF GETTING TO CLASS. Then go nuts, P*e Wee Herman and bring a bike for sure! (ask your parents. They'll explain the reference.)

But if you kind of hear a little voice saying "um...maybe not?" then stop and think again. Are you going someplace that has lovely bike lanes? Is there a significant distance for you to travel either to class or to a grocery store for which bike is the most viable option? Are you going to school in the mountains where you plan to mountain bike REGULARLY? ARE YOU ON A CYCLING TEAM??

If the answer is still MAYBE??? Then go ahead and bring a bike. But bring a crappy bike that you don't really care that much about because a huge percentage of them end up just like this. Flat tires, weeds growing up around them, and locked to a bike rack by the very university you've chosen to attend out of an abundance of concern over your neglect of it. A huge percentage of bikes arrive in the fall and are immediately forgotten. And some of them remain abandoned long enough for the university to repurpose them into donations to kids who really need them. Which is nice, but that's not your primary goal with the question of....BIKE?

This is your PSA for today.

We are definitely going to do that promised Dorm Decor episode sometime this summer, but Parents.

Please.

Check out what happens to so much of what students bring. Every year. The mountain of comforters everyone obsessed over. The pile of microwaves that we’re practically unused. The tables full of ceramic mugs. The stacks and stacks of plastic storage bins and shelving used to hold things they didn’t need to bring in the first place.

Just check it out. This is one dorm. We have dozens here at our local university. And thousands of universities in this country. There is a tsunami of this. Every. Year.

Season 2, Episode 3 Dropped! Academic Advising- why it matters and what I should do to get my KID to approach their advisor EARLY AND OFTEN.

Parents- at the end of the day we send them to college to go to class, right? All that other stuff is important too, but at the core, we expect them to learn something. And to do so, they need to understand some of mechanisms in place to help them along their academic journey. They will almost certainly struggle at some point in their studies and when they do, academic and major advisors are the key to them sorting out their problems. What can you do, parent, to encourage your student to take best advantage of this new relationship as their start their lives on campus? Join hosts Leslie and Mindy as they welcome guest Bill Tolman- chemist, department chair, advisor and dean- to the podcast. Bill is as approachable as they come on campus, but read on for his super fancy bio below. Thanks as always to my teammates Mindy Soshnik Horwitzand Geoff Easton. You can listen on Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Stitcher, and Spotify, and don't forget to share your favorites stories with us at [email protected] or support us at www.theparentpagepodcast.wordpress.com.

Season 2 Episode 2 The MAKE A MEDICAL PLAN Conundrum!!!!

Now that Indecision April is over, Parents, it’s time to start your engines: Move-in day is around three months away. There is nothing you can do to stop it but make a plan. One of the most critical issues to deal with is the transitioning of your new adult into quagmire known as the American Health Care System, and supporting them as they look to move away from pediatric to adult care. 20% of college students have chronic medical issues that will need care through the college years, and everyone else will almost certainly, at some point, need to see a doctor. It is critical to have a plan BEFORE you need a plan because NEWS FLASH: your child’s doctor at home won’t, in most cases, be much help. Join Mindy and Leslie as they interview Dr. Steve Brown, Family Physician, faculty member at the University of Arizona College of Medicine Phoenix, and fellow college parent, as they work through the critical steps parents and students can take together to create a plan and be prepared and the start their college careers.

Please continue to send us your favorite Parent Page stories to [email protected] or contact us/support us through our website www.theparentpagepodcast.wordpress.com. And stay tuned as Season 2 continues to focus on the topics over the net three months critical to prepping for move-in. Leslie Kleinberg Zacks Mindy Soshnik Horwitz

Season 2 Kickoff!

Season 2 Episode 1: The Buyers Remorse Conundrum
Indecision April 2022 is coming to a close and the college bound new adults are closing in on their final decision around where to attend college. A lucky few may have been sitting on this last stage of their college admission process for months having hit the jackpot with their Early Decision application. Either way, there is always room for some unexpected second guessing and Buyer’s Remorse on the part of your student when the reality of their decision, and those of their friends around them, starts to sink in. What’s this 11th hour anxiety really all about and how can we, as parents, help coach them through it and get them safely launched? Good friend of the Pod Kelly Jorgensen, College Counselor to uncounted grateful students the world over returns to our podcasting basement for a frank discussion around this last little hill in the roller coaster and reassuring words of advice on how to weather it. Please share your favorite Parent Page stories with us at [email protected] or contact us/support us through our webpage at www.theparepagepodcast.wordpress.com.

Hey Parents Happy Friday!
Now that we're nearing the end of our first week as FB page based on a podcast based on a FB page, we wanted to introduce the guy who launched us, Geoff Easton!

Geoff goes way back with host Leslie Kleinberg Zacks to their days as boarding school riff raff which just goes to show you that you never know, in the great arc of history, where your friends are going to snap back in like puzzle pieces that were never missing. Geoff was 100% responsible for getting us launched last weekend, and will be playing a big role in producing us going forward as we start our planning around Season 2 (due in June.)

And on that subject, please feel free to share with us your ideas for episodes or stories from your own parent page communities at [email protected] or here in the comments. Thanks!

Everyone who has ever courageously dropped off a child at college knows what it’s like to stand cluelessly outside the Ivory Tower trying desperately to look in. Dorm) team up to bring you the backstage pass parents need to college life.

During Season 1, Mindy and Leslie rip topics and stories from schools all over the country and boil them all down for parents wondering where to turn for a sane discussion. Actual professional experts and seasoned college veterans dissect questions with the frank honesty you’ll need to manage your anxiety during the weirdest phase of parenting yet.
