Last Sunday, Imran Khan's political backers dissolved Parliament in order to save him from a no-confidence vote from the opposition.

However, 4 days later, the Supreme Court ruled that the Prime Minister's actions were unconstitutional and thus, ordered the parliament to reassemble by Saturday and go ahead with the no-confidence vote.

Imran Khan was not happy with the ruling. On Thursday, he uploaded a post on Twitter where he called a cabinet meeting for Friday and vowed to fight against the decision, leaving the words, "My message to our nation is, I have always and will continue to fight for (Pakistan) till the last ball."

Russia was suspended on Thursday by the U.N General Assembly from the U.N. Human Rights Council on the news of "gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights" in Ukraine, causing Moscow to declare it was leaving the body.

The push led by the US gathered 93 votes in favour, while 24 countries voted no and 58 countries abstained. A two-thirds majority of voting members in the 193-member General Assembly in New York was required to suspend Russia from U.N Human Rights Council.

After the vote, Russia's deputy U.N. Ambassador Gennady Kuzmin reported the moves to be an "illegitimate and politically motivated step" while declaring that Russia had decided to leave the Human Rights Council altogether.

Roman Abramovich, the Russian billionaire who bought Chelsea FC in 2003, has passed on the stewardship of Chelsea to the trustees of the club’s charitable foundation. Recently, he has come under scrutiny for his links to Vladimir Putin and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

In a statement on Saturday, he said, “During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities. I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC. I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly declared war on Ukraine, as he authorised a military operation in eastern Ukraine on Thursday (Feb 24). According to Russian media, Putin said that he authorised a special military operation in breakaway areas of eastern Ukraine and warned other countries that any attempt to interfere with the Russian action would lead to “consequences they have never seen.”

Putin stated that Russia had no intentions to occupy Ukraine and that the action was in response to threats coming from Ukraine. He blamed the the Ukrainian “regime” for the bloodshed. He added that the military operation is to ensure a “demilitarization” of Ukraine and promised safety for all Ukrainian servicemen who lay down arms.

Shortly after his speech, explosions were heard in the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv. Explosions rocked the breakaway of Donetsk (eastern Ukrainian city), too. Putin's goal, according to another speech, is to take control of Donetsk and Luhansk, two breakaway eastern Ukrainian states claimed independent by the Russian government.

In a Zoom meeting on Thursday, Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc announced to ad agencies that Mixed Reality (MR) technology is only a few years away. The meeting, as per an agency executive, was arranged to help advertisers better understand the metaverse. MR technology, which was the focal point of the meeting, could allow a person wearing an MR headset to use a real world object to trigger a virtual world reaction.

It is one of three types of extended reality technologies associated with the metaverse, with the other two being augmented reality and brain-computer interface. Virtual reality headsets, like Meta's Oculus, with several other technologies could potentially be used to open a new dimension of mixed reality. In the meeting, Meta said that it could take up to a decade to fully incorporate the metaverse into the daily lives of common people.

10/02/2022

Last Tuesday, North Korea stated that it is one of the only countries in the world to put up nuclear weapons and advanced missiles, and the only one standing up against the United States by "shaking the world" through missile tests.

Tension is rising worldwide over a recent chain of North Korean ballistic missile tests. Not to forget, January was a record month of such tests, with at least seven launches that included a new kind of "hypersonic missile" able to move at high speed.

A statement from North Korea's Foreign Ministry stated a series of tests since New Year showed "remarkable achievements" that strengthened North Korea's "war deterrence."
It also mentioned about the Hwasong-15, the longest-range intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) ever launched by North Korea and is believed to have the range to deliver a nuclear warhead anywhere in the United States.

Current actions of north Korea have left the rest of the world in concern on the matter that Kim Jong Un could be fully resuming tests of North Korea's ICBMs or nuclear weapons soon.

University of Delaware engineers have demonstrated a way to effectively capture 99% of carbon dioxide from air using a novel electrochemical system powered by hydrogen. On Thursday, February 5, 2022, the research team led by UD Professor Yushan Yan, reported their method in Nature Energy.

Fuels cells work by converting fuel chemical energy directly into electricity. They can be used in transportation for things hybrid or zero-emission vehicles. Yan has been working for some time to improve Hydroxide Exchange Membrane (HEM) fuel cells, an economical and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional acid-based fuel cells used today.

So, how did they do it?
They found a way to embed the power source for the electrochemical technology inside the separation membrane. The approach involved internally short-circuiting the device.
Now, the research team had an electrochemical device that looked like a normal filtration membrane made for separating out gases, but with the capability to continuously pick up minute amounts of carbon dioxide from the air like a more complicated electrochemical system.

28/01/2022

The Falcon 9 booster was launched in 2015 but after completing its mission, it did not have fuel to return towards Earth and instead remained in space for the past 7 years.

Astronomer Jonathan McDowell told BBC News it will be the first known uncontrolled rocket collision with the Moon. However, the effects will be minor.

Since 2015 the rocket has been pulled by different gravitational forces of the Earth, Moon and Sun, making its path somewhat “chaotic”, as explained by Prof. McDowell from US-based Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Falcon 9’s projected demise was identified by journalist Eric Berger on the space website Ars Technica and by data analyst Bill Gray in his blog.

The collision is due to happen on 4 March 2022, when the rocket will explode as it makes contact. It will leave a small artificial crater on the Moon’s surface.

Bangladesh is ranked 147 out of 180 in corruption by Transparency International, which stated it was one of the countries with a worrying trend of weakening of anti-corruption organizations. The country plummeted one degree on the Corruption Perception Index 2021 with an unchanged score of 26. While the index was prepared from the results of eight surveys on Bangladesh, the report also refers to abuse of power, lack of justice, lack of expression as the main reasons behind the corruption.

Currently, Bangladesh is the second most corrupted country in South Asia. The nation not being able to make progress in terms of scores for the last few years has lead Iftekharuzzman, executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) to assert that "It is disappointing."

Iftekharuzzman also believes the reason behind this is the failure to transform high profile anti-corruption pledges into reality.

Will this country be able to join the best ranked countries in terms of eradicating corruption Soon? Or will the situation remain same for a prolonged period of time? Only time will tell.
