Speech therapy doesn’t have to be printed resources, top of the range cards or brand new toys. Our best advice is to use what you have MULTIPLE WAYS ✨🧸🪁🚂🪀📚

We are well and truly in the midst of the school term busyness… how is it almost Easter?? 🤯 But this means you’re probably finding that your caseload is building more and more. Especially for you early career and new grad speechies! Having a caseload increase can be overwhelming for any speech pathologist in their career.

We found these tips really helpful when we were struggling to manage our caseloads as new grads. We hope you find these helpful too, and remember simple and consistency is best to help tackle the workload 📚

There’s no doubt that it’s well into job season now. Apart from obvious questions you’ll be wanting to ask yourself & your future employer (pay, work hours etc).

We think it’s really important to ask these questions to help decide on the right job 💡✅

If anyone has been keeping up to date with us you’d know that we’ve been busy. Cass is living her best life in the UK and Ash is trying to navigate working for herself. Unfortunately we haven’t been able to find enough time throughout our days to record podcast episodes for you all (a 9hr time difference is really hard 😂) therefore we have made the decision to put a pause on the podcast until we are both ready to start it up again and release regular episodes for you all but don’t worry we are still going to be active on our insta ✨☀️

Back again with multiple ways to use a resource and today it’s all about - WIND UP TOYS! a highly motivating activity for all clients 🎉
I use wind up toys to target:
📝 describing words and categorising
👩🏼‍🤝‍👨🏽 social skills: sharing, turn taking, waiting
🏃🏽‍♂️ identifying verbs and answering ‘what’ questions e.g., what is the bunny doing?
👄 /s/ clusters: spin, stop, stay etc
👶🏼 anticipation of routine
💬 Expanding utterances: “The bunny is X”, “I want X”, “I like/see X” etc

You can purchase wind up toys online at stores such as kidstuff.com.au or coolthings.com.au or Amazon Australia. They can be a little pricey but definitely worth it! I use these almost every week

We are big on reusing resources for more than 1 area of speech pathology! Being able to do this with a variety of resources means that you’ll save time on planning your sessions and have a ‘never ending’ list of different ways you can target an area. I use Smelly Wellies to target:
📝Describing words: what the gumboots & monsters look like
📖Same/different concepts
👅 /s/ clusters / /l/ medial: word & phrase level
👩🏼‍🤝‍👨🏽 Social skills: turn taking, waiting etc
💬 Expanding utterances: “I want X”, “I have X”, “These are X”, “I’m looking for X”, “I found X”
👧🏼Subjective pronouns: she/he/they/it

🚨 late talker informal assessment must haves!!! 🚨

Assessments don’t always have to be formal, use what you have to gather information about the child’s skills.

Skills you could assess:
1. Receptive language (following instructions, identifying items by name/ attribute, verbs, prepositions, categories)
2. Expressive language (vocabulary naming, phrase use)
3. Play
4. Pre-linguistic skills
5. Speech sounds

❕Emotions & AAC activity idea❕
Lately I have been pairing ‘If you’re happy and you know it’ with an emotions ALS board and drawing the emotions on a whiteboard. This activity has been an absolute hit!!
Once we choose which emotion we are going to sing on the ALS board, we then draw the emotion and then sing the song with different actions (I usually make these really over the top and silly to keep my clients attention).
This is an easy activity to add to your tool kit which doesn’t involve too many toys, all your need is visuals, whiteboard/pen and a great singing voice 😳🎶😜

This season is going to look at little bit different. Cass has moved all the way over to the UK (let’s just say we aren’t looking forward to navigating the time difference 😓) and I’m (Ash) heading into the 8th month of being my own boss 😻

This just came up in my memories from 5 years ago 😅

I remember everyone in my cohort had started theirs and I had given myself like a week to write it (🤦🏻‍♀️). So off to the library I went, all day & night to finish this HUUUGEEE document. I underestimated how much work had to go into it 😅

During our graduation ceremony, I actually won the portfolio award for my cohort which meant I got a years free SPA membership (the biggest surprise ever!).

I’m not sure if they still do portfolios for the end of 4th year, BUT if they do, this is your reminder to hang in there! There’s nothing the library, some coffee & snacks can’t do to help you finish it! 👏🏻🤞🏻

I work in a Private Practice with no uniform and a relaxed dress code!
