The Olympics are right around the corner. On today's Candid Convo, I talked with former Olympian Ali Krieger, a legend in the soccer world and a wonderful friend. As a former World Cup champion, U.S. Olympian, and National Women's Soccer League champion on @[urn:li:organization:15407928], she redefined what the game could be, especially for women. But soccer was more than just a career for her—it was a critical component along her journey to self-discovery. On this episode of She Pivots, Ali talks about her love for soccer and competition from a young age; the struggles and triumphs of playing overseas in Germany after college; the feeling (and pressure!) of playing for the US Women's Nation Team; how leading Gotham FC from last in the league to champions was deeply personal for her; and her journey to living openly and becoming a mother while still playing soccer professionally.

You may know Ilana Glazer from her award-winning TV series Broad City and her self-admittedly “wild” and “free” character, Ilana Wexler. However, Ilana has soared far beyond her character on the TV show, writing and starring in her own movies, including Babes (in theaters now!!), releasing her own stand-up comedy special, and diving into political activism through the Generator Collective. On this episode of She Pivots, the comedian, activist, producer, and actress talks about how Broad City went from a web series to a critically acclaimed series on Comedy Central, the differences between her character on Broad City and herself, why she decided to launch Generator Collective and what they’re doing this year before the upcoming election, and how creating Babes was an immensely personal process. Shannon Watts had been a stay-at-home mom for five years when she turned on the TV to see horror unfolding at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. After witnessing the aftermath of the murder of 20 children and 6 adults on that cold day in December, Shannon knew she had to channel her rage into action.

What started as a page called One Million Moms for Gun Control eventually became Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, one of the leading advocacy groups in the country fighting our country’s gun violence epidemic.

Pre-pivot, I worked in political advocacy and campaigns creating policy change. Gun violence prevention work, especially that of Moms Demand Action, is not new to me. Last year, I founded my local MDA chapter. Moms are fired up about gun violence prevention, and you should be too.

On this episode of She Pivots, Shannon Watts recounts growing up with ADHD, finding her passion for journalism, leaving behind her successful PR career to prioritize her kids, the lessons learned from losing the vote on universal background checks, the importance of diversity in leadership, and what’s next for her after stepping down as CEO of Moms Demand Action.

Before founding Baby2Baby, Kelly and Norah were on very different life paths. Kelly Sawyer Patricof was a model, who spent her free time volunteering with Head Start - an experience that opened her eyes to how many children lacked basic necessities, like properly fitting shoes. Norah Weinstein was a lawyer at a high-powered New York City firm, who enjoyed engaging in pro bono work, especially in helping low-income women secure housing and other resources. A dinner between the two, arranged by Kelly’s father-in-law, revealed their shared passions for nonprofit work, their new status as mothers, and their interest in pivoting in their careers.
