Early intervention is critical as individuals who begin partaking in drug use when they are relatively young are more likely to abuse them later in life. Prevention and intervention all start at home and within the family. Parents or parental figures must be the key player in ensuring that every individual who is under a certain circumstance is heard and understood. Moreover, they should be the pioneers of open talks and discussions within the family. There is no certain way or a series of determined steps in preventing substance abuse, as one person varies from the other. However, there are things that families and influential adults can do to prevent it.
It is highly critical to know and be informed on how substance abuse starts and develops. Having enough knowledge on this subject matter averts one from becoming ignorant of the situation. It is also pertinent to nurture healthy friendships and relationships by avoiding friends or family members who influence one to do aggravating things. If one starts to surround themself with people who are of good influence, then one will less likely to fall under peer pressure.
Moreover, seeking help for mental illness is another essential way to prevent substance abuse. Mental illness and substance abuse often go hand in hand so if someone is dealing with depression, anxiety, or the likes, it is best to seek help from professionals such as counselors instead of resorting to alcohol or drugs.
Additionally, examining and becoming aware of associated risk factors, which may it be biological, social, or psychological will help in overcoming them. Lastly, keep a well-balanced and active life. People often resort to drugs and drug abuse when something in their life is causing them further distress. Therefore, having a strong support system and efficient stress management skills can help one overcome major stressors.
