This tribe has only 99 members because when 1 baby is born, 1 person must die.

Usually, when a baby is born, it triggers joy and celebration in the community within which the birthing happened. But in the El Molo tribe of Kenya, childbirth sparks mixed feelings because while it calls for celebration, it also means someone must die to ensure the population remains below hundred.

El Molo, a tribe of only 99 members where 1 person must die when 1 baby is born
The EL MOLO, known as the hunters of the Jade Sea is one of the over 70 tribes in Kenya, mainly dwelling in a small village on the shores of Lake Turkana in the south of Loiyangalani at Masarbit south district of Kenya’s northern Eastern Province. They are also known by other names, including Elmolo, Dehes, Fura-Pawa and Ldes.

It is reported that El Molo are just 99 in population, comprising men, women and children. Their language is El Molo, belonging to the Cush*tic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family.

El Molo people are noted to be a unique tribe because of their cultural, customary and spiritual beliefs, one of which is that when a baby is born, someone else must die to keep a balance between life and death.

Afrimax English visited the El Molo community recently to shed light on their culture, livelihood, and access to necessary amenities among others.

It is the belief of El Molo people that their population must not exceed ninety-nine (99) people, so as children are being born, some people who have had the chance to live must die to keep the population below 100.

Once a baby is born, the elders of the tribe are consulted and those who have lived long and fulfilling lives are chosen to die. They accept to die in good fate because it’s deemed to be a recognition of the life cycle and respect for their ancestors who passed on the customs and beliefs to them.

According to them, the spirits and the cosmos guide them in deciding who dies next. It is unclear if the chosen people die naturally or how they give way to the new babies.

Afrimax English reports that at one point, their population reached hundred (100) but it didn’t last for 24 hours because it was considered a sacrilege. It is unclear how it was quickly rectified.

Since nobody knows who will die after a child is born to keep the El Molo population in check, they are always virtually sitting on tenterhooks. Interestingly, if someone falls ill during the period of the child being born, he or she becomes restless even if he or she is not the one appointed to die.

Known for being very spiritual and worshipping of WAAK/WAHK, El Molo are mostly fishermen who depend on the lake Turkana for food and livelihood.

Frequent droughts, lack of farming lands, good drinking water and food reportedly make it difficult for their community to contain more people. It is unclear if these informed their ancestors to place a ceiling on the population, which was bequeathed to them.

*Survivor Says Something New About the Bermuda Triangle Mystery*

The airplane involved was a Beechcraft Bonanza single-engine aircraft. Onboard, pilot Bruce Gernon had two passengers: his father and business partner. They took off from Andros Island in the Bahamas and headed northwest for the Florida coast. It was December 4, 1970

If you draw up a map, trace a line connecting the island of Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Miami, and back to Bermuda, what do you get? Yes, it’s a Bermuda Triangle — a sinister polygon known for mysteriously swallowing over 2,000 ships and 200 aircraft over centuries! Bruce Gernon’s plane was within its hungry grasp...

But this was a typical flight Bruce had made dozens of times before! The trip usually took about an hour and a half with no hiccups or mysterious phenomena whatsoever! The men were no more concerned than you would be during your daily commute to work.

Oh, but this time would be different. They would face very unusual circumstances, indeed...

Bruce took off and started gaining altitude. Strange things started happening right from the get-go. At an altitude of about 1,000 feet (300 m), he noticed a small cloud up ahead. But... it kept growing. Not from the plane getting closer — this thing was actually getting bigger in size! Bruce had to fly through it, and he came out the other end just fine.

Another mysterious cloud appeared at 11,500 feet (3,500 m). This one was massive, and Bruce had no other choice but to fly through it too. So, he concentrated, took a deep breath, and in they went.

At that moment, it got dark as night all around the aircraft. Not a single sliver of sunshine got through. But this wasn’t a storm cloud, and it wasn’t raining. Bruce was starting to get worried. And then — BAM! — he saw flashes of white light! They would appear and vanish quickly like lightning. But this pilot knew this certainly was no lightning. The flashes were so bright, they lit up the whole space around them.

Bruce kept flying for another 30 minutes when he realized this was the same cloud he had gone through earlier when he started to climb. But now the cloud was cylindrical, and the plane was flying through its center. It was about 1 mile wide and seemed endless. Bruce thought he could never get out of that trap. But a minute later, he saw light at the end of the tunnel.

He kept that yoke straight ahead — he was almost out of this nightmare! But all of a sudden, unexplainable things started happening again. The walls of the cloud tunnel began to narrow —they were closing in on the plane! The navigational instruments started wigging out. The compass was spinning by itself counterclockwise.

The electronic instruments were all malfunctioning. It was like the plane was being operated by something else, or it was moving inside some kind of current. All of Bruce’s attempts to take control were to no avail.

He kept flying through that tunnel, bound and determined to get out of this thing and live to tell the tale. The walls kept narrowing, smaller and smaller, wrapping like a vortex. Bruce was running out of time — he had to get out of this place fast! The next 20 seconds were the most intense of his life. But then...

He burst out of this foggy trap! As Bruce described later, he felt weightless for 5 seconds as his plane left the tunnel. The clouds dispersed, and now the aircraft was in a grayish haze. The men let out a big sigh of relief.

He immediately grabbed the radio and contacted ground control. Bruce wanted them to determine his location. But when the dispatcher looked at the green screen, his face became contorted with confusion...

Bruce’s plane wasn’t on the radar! It was as if the thing was invisible! But then the dispatcher said the aircraft was already in Miami airspace. Bruce was utterly shocked by this information. It just couldn’t be true.

The distance the Beechcraft was supposed to cover was about 250 miles (400 km). Remember, the whole trip usually took around 90 minutes. But this time, it took just 47 minutes to get to the destination! This model of aircraft can only cruise at about 180 mph (290 kph).

Do the math, and anyone would understand that this was physically impossible. The dispatcher must have made a mistake. But when the clouds parted, Bruce saw that he really was over Miami!

The plane landed safely, and it was time to try and solve this mystery. So what happened on that flight? Bruce checked the remaining fuel and his watch. After a short calculation, he was only more confused. The plane hadn’t gone through the amount of fuel it should’ve.

Bruce couldn’t have been wrong. He was a very experienced pilot. By his early 20s, he already had 600 hours of flight under his belt. And he was all-too-familiar with this airspace he’d flown countless times. All the evidence in hand seemed to indicate that Bruce’s plane just skipped over almost half the entire distance...

The man thought about this bizarre occurrence for a long time. He even consulted with professors and experts. But none of them could give an exact answer to what happened that day. So, he came up with his own theory and even wrote a book about it. Bruce thought it all came down to this “electric fog” with white flashes.

Others, however, theorized that dark energy was responsible for this time leap. Yes, that same dark energy responsible for the expansion of the universe. This energy could’ve curved space-time like a black hole, forming this strange tunnel. Bruce accidentally hit it, but he was lucky to get out of there. That’s how he got into Miami airspace so fast. But dark energy is just a theory attempting to explain the unexplainable.

To this day, there is no real answer for how Bruce was able to travel that distance in such a short time. But some details can still be explained. Archive records show that 84 sunspots were recorded that day, as well a huge solar wind moving almost 440 miles per second (700 km/s)! This would cause disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere that could throw off the plane’s instruments and radars. So Bruce’s version that he was in an “electronic fog” could be right!

And about these weird clouds. The thing is, they’re pretty commonplace things in this area. Zones with low and high pressure are constantly colliding there. The result: storm clouds. Perhaps that cloud growing before Bruce’s eyes was simply two massive air currents crashing into each other...

But so far, no one has been able to explain how the plane got to Miami so fast. Well, maybe in the future, the truth will be revealed. In the meantime, it remains another mysterious riddle of the Bermuda Triangle. But it’s still by far not the most shocking incident there...

In 1945, a total of 5 planes went missing in the Bermuda Triangle all at once! On December 5, some Navy student pilots were training in the area. The day’s lesson: navigation. Ironically enough, they couldn’t find their way back to the base and got lost. Many people assumed they ran out of fuel. This is likely to have caused the incident, but the circumstances were very strange...

The students were under the supervision of an experienced lieutenant who had 2,500 flight hours. He would never let a bunch of newbies go so far that they’d get lost.

Three years later, a passenger jet headed to Miami from Puerto Rico disappeared in the same area. There were 29 passengers and 3 crew members on board. The weather was clear throughout the flight.

But experts believe that when the plane was about 50 miles off the coast of Miami, it could’ve been hit by a strong wind that knocked it off course. Years later, divers found a similar-looking plane in the waters. But since it was lacking certain details and registrations, no one could confirm that it was the missing Miami-bound aircraft.

The next month, in January 1948, another plane went missing in Bermuda. 25 passengers and 6 crew members just vanished somewhere between Azores and Bermuda. The mystery of this plane’s disappearance — along with countless others — remains unsolved.

Three Astronauts Return To Earth After Being Stuck In Space For A Year
NewsMirror September 27, 2023

ANASA astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts returned to Earth on Wednesday after being stuck in space for just over a year.

American Frank Rubio set a record for the longest U.S. spaceflight — a result of the extended stay, AP News reports.

The trio landed in a remote area of Kazakhstan, descending in a Soyuz capsule that was rushed up as a replacement after their original ride was hit by space junk and lost all its coolant while docked to the International Space Station.

What should have been a 180-day mission turned into a 371-day stay. Rubio spent more than two weeks longer in space than Mark Vande Hei, who held NASA’s previous endurance record for a single spaceflight.

Russia holds the world record of 437 days, set in the mid-1990s.

The Soyuz capsule that brought Rubio and cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin back was a replacement launched in February. Russian engineers suspect a piece of space junk pierced the radiator of their original capsule late last year, midway through what should have been a six-month mission. Engineers worried that without cooling, the capsule’s electronics and any occupants could overheat to dangerous levels, so the craft returned empty.

There wasn’t another Soyuz to launch a fresh crew until this month. Their replacements finally arrived nearly two weeks ago.

“No one deserves to go home to their families more than you,” the space station’s new commander, Denmark’s Andreas Mogensen, said earlier this week.

Prokopyev told ground controllers throughout the descent that all three were feeling good. They experienced more than four times the force of gravity as their capsule streaked through the atmosphere and came to a touchdown in the barren Kazakh steppes, ending up on its side. Helicopters moved in with recovery crews to fetch the astronauts.

“It’s good to be home,” Rubio said after being pulled from the capsule.

Rubio, 47, an Army doctor and helicopter pilot, said at a news conference last week that he never would have agreed to a full year in space if asked at the outset. He ended up missing important family milestones including the oldest of his four children finishing her first year at the U.S. Naval Academy and another heading off to West Point.

Okpambe Fishing Festival, Another Feather To Our Tourism Hat.

Please permit me to share with you our new discovery in this all lucrative sector and to call for your collaboration to Internationalize this new idea.

Globally, Tourism has been identified as a viable tool for Job creation, revenue generation, poverty eradication, crime reduction and above all, a veritable platform for inter Cultural relations.

According to the World Bank, Tourism is said to contribute approximately 6.1% of the annual Internally generated revenue in Nigeria and serves as the second highest employer of labour after Agriculture. It is even projected that in 2030, the sector will overtake Agriculture. This is in addition to contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings in Nigeria as well as attracting massive development to the country.

To state categorically, Agro- Tourism, particularly, Fishing Festivals, have over the years proven to be more valuable than other sectors. They have enjoyed more patronage from the people and raked in millions of dollars in investment to the host communities, and the most prominent in the country at the moment is Argungun Fishing Festival of Kebbi state.

Like most events, Argungun has grown from a local fishing Festival into an international brand gathering tourists from all over the world annually. The success of Argungun is attributed to the huge support it gets from Northerners, both the government and private sector. And permit me to ask, is there any fishing festival in the South South Geopolitical zone or in the whole of southern Nigeria that gathers as much crowd as Argungun and enjoys the patronage of all her people, home and abroad? When Argungun was shut down for ten years due to insecurity, was there any event in the South that took advantage of the peace and tranquility in the region to sustain the teaming tourists that troop into the country in search of a fishing festival experience? Your answers are as good as mine.

It is on this note that I wish to formally bring to your notice and specially seek your partnership to promote OKPAMBE CULTURAL AND FISHING FESTIVAL, OCAFFEST, one of the most spectacular cultural events in Cross River State, yet unknown to many.

OCAFFEST is a one week festivity (six days according to Yala calendar) observed in the first quarter of every year by the people of Nkum Okpambe, Yala-Obubra in Cross River State and begins with traditional rites at the palace of the king of Okpambe known as Ogabor. Prior to the festival, the Ogabor in consultation with his chiefs ( Achuole) and kingmakers( Aatumambe) together with the Festival planning committee led by the management of Coneri Nigeria meet to fix the date and it is subsequently announced by a senior member of Aatumambe who goes around the community with a metal gong ( Wuje). The flag off follows subsequently 90 days to the event. And the event includes cultural dance Festival, Moninkim Festival, indigenous technology and native delicacies exhibition, hunting and fishing carnival, fish catch competition, fish roasting competition, regatta and canoeing competition, symposium, Moninkim Maiden Pageant, award, Burn Fire Night Etc.

Cross River State is blessed with yet unharnessed tourism sites. These include the massive natural lakes in Nkum Okpambe, Yala-Obubra in Obubra local Government Area of Cross River State known as Okum and Eminyi respectively. These two lakes play host to the annual Fishing Festival. The Festival which began in the early 16th century to mark the end of the chieftaincy tussle amongst the five major clans of Ukpochi, Omindom, Njen, Alagha and Echinghro has become a major tool for unity, peaceful coexistence and social integration amongst participants. The lakes founded by two prominent hunters in Yala history, Oki Ogar and Odey Oba have the capacity to accommodate a crowd of 10,000 participants and have intriguing historical accounts. It is at the coast of these lakes that thousands of fishermen/women gather annually to compete for the biggest catch of the year.

Okpambe Cultural and fishing festival to say the least is a social, economic and tourism gold mine waiting to be tapped. This is obviously not an over statement considering the advantages abound.

To start with, the host community, Nkum Okpambe, a Yala tribe of the larger Idoma nation and a people predominantly known for hunting, fishing and crop farming are extremely peaceful, loving, hospitable and enterprising. They represent a diplomatic melting point between their fellow Obubra and Ikom neighbors. With with two massive lakes under their belt, and numerous stones monoliths including Lechor Olikplikpo, a mysterious stone that measures just an arms length but comparatively longer than anyone that dares to measure his or her height with it, beautiful sand beaches, a huge population, a peaceful and serene environment, a rich cultural heritage and the people's combined determination to be heard globally, it is obvious that OCAFFEST is another feather to our Tourism hat.

I therefore seize this opportunity to invite you formally to invest, collaborate and participate in the 2024 edition of the Festival.

Thanks for your time.
