99 years ago today on the 12th March 1922 the 'Bahaghs massacre' happened in Cahirsiveen Co.Kerry when Free State forces took five IRA prisoners, shot them in the legs and then blew them up.

For Irish men to do this to their fellow country men is appalling. The men who murdered were all attached to the Kerry No.3 Brigade. They were: Mike Courtney. Eugene Dwyer, John Sugrue, Willie Rearden and Dan Shea. Na dean dearmad orthu, coimead a smaoineamh beo i gconai.
The five men were being held by Free State troops at Bahaghs workhouse - then in use as a temporary detention centre - following their arrest for irregular activities several days earlier.

In the early hours of March 12 members of the Free State's crack unit, the Dublin Guard, who had been tasked with defeating anti treaty forces in Kerry. The Free staters had a notorious reputation for brutality in the process. They arrived at the workhouse and selected five of the twenty men in custody there.

This group were then brought to an irregular roadblock several miles away where the IRA men were shot in the legs before being laid over a mine which was detonated by the Free state troops blowing the five men to pieces. May they rest in peace.

The Ballyseedy massacre happened on this day 99 years ago in the early morning of the 7th of March 1923. The Free Staters took nine Irish Republican Army prisoners from Ballymullen barracks to Ballyseedy woods, three miles outside Tralee. The men had been tortured during their captivity and many had broken bones from being beat by hammers among other inplements.

Where the brave republicans were tied to a landmine attached to a log, the freestaters under the orders of Comandant Paddy Daly of the Dublin Guards detonated the mine killing eight of the prisoners.

One man managed to escape, Volunteer Stephen Fuller. He was blown into a ditch by the sheer force of the explosion, wounded badly but he was able to crawl and escape. He was taken in at the nearby home of Michael and Hannah Curran. They cared for him and although he was badly injured, he survived and later went on to become a Fianna Fáil TD

He lived to tell what really happened and what he further saw. Which was the freestate troops throwing British supplied hand grenades at dead and dying men and then shooting them to ensure they were all dead.

The Free State troops in Tralee had prepared nine coffins for the bodies. There was mayhem when the bodies were brought back to Tralee, where the shocked relatives of the murdered prisoners opened the coffins in an effort to identify the corpses, however only eight bodies were present due to Fullers lucky escape.

Later the same dayvthe Free State troops also under the command of Paddy Daly of the Dublin Guard went on to kill four more republicans at the Countess Bridge in Killarney.

Things got hot in the Dáil today! Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae told it as it is to Paschal Donohoe in the Dáil during a heated row on the cost of living. He said people would be better off robbing a pallet of fertiliser than a bank due to the increase in the cost of living.

The Rural Independents group of TDs brought a motion calling for a ‘mini-budget’ to help people and farmers and people living in rural areas due rising prices.

Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath, said to Donohoe (the Minister for Finance) that Oliver Cromwell wasn’t as bad to the ordinary Irish people as the current government.

He also said that Pascal Donohoe and his government colleagues in Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil “love the big business conglomerates, you love ‘em,” at the expense of ordinary workers and small farmers.

See the video below for the heated debate!!

Celebration at half 2 outside the corner house in Ballylongford Co.Kerry tomorrow (Sunday 20th) to mark 100 years since the Black and tans left Ballylongford. The Centenary event will also double as 101 year remembrance of the large scale burning of Ballylongford.

There will be a speech about the war of Independence period in Ballylongford. A place that suffered the brutality of Crown forces for a long time, from the seige of Carrigafoyle Castle, The Lislaughtin Abbey attack where the old monks were slaughtered. The famine where locals were stopped from even eating seaweed from the shore.

The Black and tans arrived in March 1920 and until February 1922 they were the plague of Ballylongford. Many atrocities they committed in the area, the two burnings, Eddie Carmodys murder to name but a few of their wrong doings.

The speech will centre around the struggle for freedom in Ballylongford and events which happened in the locality it will culminate with the Black and tans leaving. This is at 2:30 p.m at the corner house next to Finucanes bar.

Afterwards there will be refreshments, food and music in Finucanes bar (the homeplace of the O'Rahilly) where a super Sunday will ensue with music, yarns and food. Finucanes bar is like a museum with all the old antiques and memorabilia and the O'Rahillys bedroom. All are welcome.

30 years ago today saw the atrocity know as the Sean Graham bookmakers massacre.
Five people died when the UDA stormed into the bookmakers in south Belfast and opened fire on February 5 1992.

Those killed were 18 year old Peter Magee, James Kennedy (15), Christy Doherty (51), William McManus (54) and Jack Duffin (66).Seven people were also injured in the attack.

Many believe there was British security force collusion in the murders with one of the guns used, a Czech-made VZ58, is thought to have come from a batch smuggled into the north by loyalists with the help and/or knowledge of British intelligence.

Another gun used in the attack had been given to police by a UDA agent before being handed back to the killer gang.

Police Ombudsman Marie Anderson is due to publish the results of Operation Achille, which examines this massacre and other murders, on Monday coming. Many are very sceptical that this will bring transparency and justice.

Today the relatives of those murdered and trying to make sure there is no amnesty given to the Killers 30 years on.

50 years ago today Bloody Sunday (the Bogside Massacre) happened. It was a massacre on the 30th of January 1972 in Derry when British soldiers shot 26 unarmed civilians during a protest march against internment without trial. Fourteen people died.

Many of the victims were shot while fleeing from the soldiers, and some were shot while trying to help the wounded.

Other protesters were injured by shrapnel, rubber bullets, or batons, and two were run down by British Army vehicles. All of those shot were Catholics.

The march had been organised by the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA). The soldiers who carried out this atrocity were from the 1st Battalion, Parachute Regiment. The same battalion implicated in the Ballymurphy massacre several months prior.

The Queen and the British government are today in 2022 pushing on with their plans and proposals to give amnesty to the British soldiers who killed these unarmed civilians who were Catholic civil rights protestors. That would see not one of these soldiers held accountable for this massacre. The people must stand up and ask for transparency and justice. May all those murdered on bloody Sunday R.I.P.

As the public mourns in shock at the horror of the murder of Ashling Murphy. May she rest in peace. On the back of this terrible murder some political parties have been talking about the major problem in society that is crimes against women.

The public must remember actions speak louder than words and Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and the Greens are in Government. Some of the aforementioned parties have been in control of the department of justice for years so how come they have not imposed harsher sentences for such crimes.

Also these parties in 2020 voted to seal the records of the Mother and baby homes for another 30 years. Sealing up the rights of the victims again, the mothers and their children. The women and children of Ireland and the world deserve more. Transparency and accountability and harsher punishments are needed. Ireland needs actions and not words.

One hundred years today January 8th 1922 was the first full day after the Dáil voted to ratify the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The vote in favour was extremly close at 64 votes to 57 if just four more votes went against the treaty it would have lost.
The vote took place on January 7th 1922 exactly a month after the signing of the Treaty in London

The vote created a border in Ireland which still unfortunately exists 100 years later. This led to a Civil war. And also killings and unrest for the next century in what is know to some as Northern Ireland. Hopefully Irish unity is on the horizon as Ireland unfree shall never be at peace.

Today is a special New year's day as of Midnight just gone an Ghaeilge became a full European Union language.

It now enjoys the same status as languages including Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and English.

Hence there will be far greater employment for Irish language translators, media, interpreters and teachers.

The EU offered The Irish government this status in 1973 when they joined, but the government declined which was madness.

Alas, the EU finally recognised the cultural and importance of one of the oldest languages in the world that is still in existence today, Irelands national language, an Ghaeilge.

The derogation status of the Irish language in the EU which it has been on since 2007 ended and it is now a full language of the EU.

It was a significant start to the New year after decades of delays the Irish government never seemed to want to get it done swiftly.

Lá iontach do chách.

Happy new year everyone. Hope it is a good one

13/12/2021

On December the 13th 1921. 100 years ago today. The Anglo Irish treaty was broken for the first time exactly a week after it was signed on December 6th 1921. As this was to be the first shooting/killing on the island of Ireland since it was signed.

Some of the Ballylongford volunteers arrived in to Ballybunion for one reason. To avenge a fallen comrade who was murdered whilst unarmed Lieutenant Eddie Carmody.

As an R.I.C officer from Carlow John Maher shot the last bullet that killed an unarmed Eddie Carmody who was a lieutenant with the Ballylongford volunteers on 22nd of November 1920.

It became knowledge to the volunteers that Maher was the man who shot the last fatal bullet into Eddie as a local man Pat (The fox) Moriarty was hiding in a turf shed and witnessed it. His version fell in line with what the local doctor Conor Martin who told the volunteers that the man who shot the last bullet had an Irish accent. This man was John Maher an RIC officer from Carlow who joined the RIC in 1917. Maher was there with the black and tans causing havoc in Ballylongford.

On a side note Doctor Conor Martin was father to five boys and five girls with his wife Katherine Martin (née Fitzmaurice). Two of his sons in particular who were born in Ballylongford who would go on to be well acclaimed. One being Francis Xavier "F.X." Martin who was a cleric, historian, and activist. He was as a leading member of a well-publicized struggle, during the late 1970s and early 1980s, to save the historic Wood Quay archaeological site in Dublin. He was also chairman of the Council of Trustees of the National Library of Ireland from 1977 to 1981. Another of Dr. Martin’s sons who was born in Ballylongford on the 23rd of July 1921 was Malachi Martin he was an Irish Catholic priest and writer on the Catholic Church. He wrote many acclaimed books including The New York Times best seller The Jesuits. He was in the upper echelons of the Vatican where he was a close associate of the renowned Jesuit Cardinal, Augustin Bea, and Pope John XXIII. Later in life he performed exorcisms in the USA. He gives an account five such exorcisms in his acclaimed book Hostage to the Devil. There is a Netflix documentary based on him called Hostage to the Devil the same name as his book. The exorcist films are reputedly based on him.

After the shooting Maher was transferred to Ballybunion after killing Eddie as he had become target number one for the Ballylongford volunteers. He was promoted to sergeant on the 1st of January 1921, but he rarely left the barrack in Ballybunion even after the truce was signed in June 1921. However, he obviously thought he was safe once the treaty was signed on December the 6th. However, the Ballylongford volunteers never forget, for as Ballylongford was a real rebel/republican stronghold at the time. As BBC correspondent for war Fergal Keane described Ballylongford in his book Wounds he said it was ‘’bandit country’’.

On December 13th, 1921, some of the Ballylongford volunteers (Patrick Cox, John Creedon, Thomas Carmody and Michael McNamara) made their way to Ballybunion by foot, they located sergeant Maher on the castle green and ambushed him and Constable Gallagher on the Castle green. They did not kill Gallagher as they were there for one man only and they shot and killed Maher on the Castle Green avenging their fallen comrade, Eddie.

This was a majorly historic killing as it was the first killing/shooting on the whole island of Ireland since the Anglo-Irish treaty was signed on December the 6th. This was exactly one week after the treaty was signed.

So, the Ballylongford volunteers were the first on this island to break the treaty between Ireland and England in the name of avenging their beloved Eddie Carmody.

Background to the killing of Eddie Carmody the reason why the men went to break the treaty.

On the 21st of November 1920 lorry loads of black and tans arrived in Ballylongford as a reprisal for the kidnapping of a black and tan and RIC officer in Ballylongford who were released before this reprisal. They were taken hostage for what they done, beating, and interrogating a congregation outside Ballylongford church at gun point.

On the 21st of November the tans arrived under District Inspector Tobias O'Sullivan they looted, drank, and shot up houses.

At around 3 o'clock in the morning on the 22nd of November Lieutenant of the Ballylongford volunteers Eddie Carmody was near doctors cross in Rusheen in Ballylongford. Eddie was a Moyvane man who had come to Ballylongford for farm work, and he quickly fitted in as he was well regarded locally and a fantastic footballer.

He came out onto the road upon hearing footsteps thinking they were those of his comrades.

Unfortunately, the footsteps happened to be those of some black and tans and forces of the crown and he was shot, he managed to hide however he was eventually found on this moonlight night and beaten and shot dead even though he was unarmed the last fatal bullet was shot by John Maher. Eddie’s body was thrown onto the back of a cart, dragged through the town, and left in a turf shed for a family member to collect the next day. The tans then proceed to burn down some places in the town such as Collins's creamery and saw mills, a public house of Mr. Collins, a hardware premises, and some private houses. The owners of the properties they burned had no affiliations to the IRA or the volunteers. In what was the first burning of Ballylongford before the large scale burning in February 1921.

08/12/2021

Tonight Barcelona have been knocked out of the Champions league at the group stage following a 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich. This is their earliest departure for 21 years.

The last time was in 2000/2001 with
Pep Guardiola as club captain. Barcelona were drawn in Group H with AC Milan, Leeds United and Besiktas.

Barcelona's European form was not questionable. They made it to the semi-finals the previous year where they fell to Spanish rivals Valencia.

Domestically they had just finished second to a classy Deportivo La Coruña team and Barcelona made some acquisitions in the summer. Barcelona spent €63 million on two key signings, Emmanuel Petit and Marc Overmars both joined from Arsenal.

The game that ultimately sealed their fate was on October the 24th, 2000.

Rivaldo was Barcelona's main man at the time however they also boasted Patrick Kluivert.

They face a Leeds United side that had a major Irish feel to it as an Irish man was their manger, David O'Leary who was the Irish hero when he scored the decisive penalty that sent Ireland to the 1990 World cup quarter final.

O'Leary had a mini selection headache as Leeds were without a number of their regulars for the important fixture. Hence a young Jonathan Woodgate came in at centre half.

There was a change upfront too from their first group stage meeting with Barcelona. Alan Smith remained the preferred option behind the striker however Mark Viduka came in for Michael Bridges up front.

Atleast O'Leary could call on two of his most important players Gary Kelly who captained Leeds on the night and the influential Ian Harte. Another Irish man Stephen Mcphail was on the bench on this famous night.

Going into the game, Leeds United and AC Milan were joint top with seven points each while Barcelona were on four and desperately needed all three points. Besiktas who were also in the group were no cakewalk especially at home as it proved to be a bit of a fortress, having not lost in Turkey in the competition.

The game got off to a brilliant start for Leeds as Lee Bowyer managed to score inside the first five minutes. His freekick caught Dutruel off his guard in the Barcelona net.

In midfield Cocu, Enrique, Xavi and Simão were matched for creativity from their Leeds counterparts.Paul Robinson kept Rivaldo and co at bay in the first half. Alan Smith and Mark Viduka kept the Barcelona back line on their feet.

There was an electric buzz at Elland Road and Leeds didn't give anything up for 90 minutes and battled until the very end and looked like a team that belonged amongst Europe's best.

In the final minutes, Rivaldo found his way past Paul Robinson. Finally Ireland’s Ian Harte kicked the ball for dead after the restart in the 94th minute and it was game over.

Leeds United had left an insurmountable task for Barcelona.Leeds drew with AC Milan two weeks after the Barcelona draw and came second in the group thus Barcelona were dumped out.

Leeds went on a run to the semi-finals of the competition where they were defeated by Valencia.

And tonight 21 years later is the first time Barcelona have exited the competition so early since.

On the radio today a man from Kerry said do not mind meteorologists, that this storm is God sending his message by blowing down Christmas decorations that were put up too early by some people.

As they should of waited till the 8th of December as that is when Christmas starts. The feast of the immaculate conception, and that it was God sending his message that people have lost the trur meaning of Christmas.

So people will have to decorate again on the 8th or after! What do you make of that mans analysis? Two Christmas trees were toppled in North Kerry today. One in Ballylongford the other in Listowel.

Gordon Elliott had a day to remember at Navan as he trained the winning horse in an incredible seven of the eight races on the card.

Willie Mullins’ Whatdeawant claimed division one of the Kilberry Pub & Kitchen Maiden Hurdle, after which Elliott began as he took every remaining contest of the day.

Enjoying three winners over hurdles, three over fences and one in a bumper, Elliott’s achievement was made all the more special as Navan is the track closest to his County Meath stable.

“It’s been an unbelievable day – to get seven winners at one track and at Navan as well, my local track,” he said.

“I don’t know if it’s been done before in Ireland, but to train seven winners is unbelievable and we’ll never forget it.

“This is special after the year we’ve had, it just shows what it means to the staff and all my owners and friends.

“You see the likes of Noel Meade clapping you in, they are your proper friends, I can’t believe it.

“We’re back doing what we love doing.”

01/12/2021

On this day 77 years ago, The 1st of December 1944. IRA Chief of Staff, Charlie Kerins, was hung in Mountjoy Jail by the Free state.

Charlie Kerins was born in Tralee County Kerry in 1918. At the age of 17 he joined his local unit of the IRA and took part in action against the Blueshirts in the area. In 1942, Charlie travelled to Dublin to join the GHQ staff, then under extreme pressure from the Free State Government of Fianna Fáil. Hundreds of IRA members had been arrested and interned without trial or sentence.

A year later, when Hugh McAteer was arrested, Charlie became Chief of Staff. He moved about the city under the name of Charles Hanley, constantly on the run and with a price on his head.
These were dark days for the IRA; its ranks had been depleted by constant arrests at the hands of former comrades who had taken the Free State shilling and were now members of the Broy Harriers. One of these men was Sergeant Dinny O'Brien.

Dinny O'Brien had fought with his two brothers, Larry and Paddy, in the Marrowbone Lane garrison in 1916; afterwards they had fought together in the Tan War and in 1922 Paddy was shot dead by the pro-Treaty forces in Enniscorthy.

Dinny stayed in the IRA until 1933, when, along with a number of other IRA men, he was inveigled into the Broy Harriers on De Valera's plea that "we need you to fight the Blueshirt menace". Within a few years, he was fighting and hunting his own, as rapacious as the most dyed in the wool Stater. In his time, he cut down quite a few republicans, Liam Rice and Charlie McGlade among them, shot while resisting arrest. O'Brien built up his own secret network in pubs, hotels, at stations and among the news vendors on the streets. By 1942, he had turned into a vicious and determined hunter and the IRA gave the order that he was to be executed.

On the 9th of September 1942 at Ballyboden, County Dublin, O'Brien left his house and began getting into his car. Three IRA men, wearing trench coats and armed with Thompson sub machine guns, came up the drive and opened fire. The shots from the Thompson smashed the windows of his car, wounding him. He alighted and ran for cover to the gate but before reaching it, he was cut down by a single round to the head. Two of the IRA men then wrapped the Thompsons in their trench coats and mounted their bicycles and rode towards Dublin. The third IRA man left on foot, leaving his bicycle behind. The operation was a success, apart from the abandoned bike, which had been used by IRA men including Charlie Kerins for over two months and may have had fingerprints on it.

After the shooting of O'Brien, a huge police swoop began and many of the IRA's safe houses were raided. Charlie continued to move about the city re-organising the army.

He took part with Jackie Griffiths and Archie Doyle in a robbery of the Player Wills factory on the South Circular Road, where £5,000 of much needed funds was taken. The three men arrived at the factory gates on bikes. When the van with the money arrived, they placed scarves around their faces and stopped it at gunpoint. The van was handed over and the three men drove away in it.

With the constant raids on republican houses, it became harder for the IRA to move about the city. By 1944, the IRA had just four safe houses in Dublin. One of these was 50 Upper Rathmines Road. This was in this house that the Broy Harriers were to finally capture Charlie Kerins.

On the 16th of June 1944 at 4 in the morning, the police raided the house. Charlie was asleep on the top floor of the house with a Thompson under his bed but before he was fully awake the police had him in handcuffs.
Charlie was charged before a military court with the shooting of O'Brien. He refused to recognise the court or enter any plea. He was found guilty on the flimsy evidence that one of his fingerprints was on the bicycle that was left behind.

At the close of the trial, the Free State officer presiding adjourned for several hours to give Charlie time to change his plea and avoid the death penalty. But when the trial resumed, Charlie told the military judges: "You could have adjourned for six years as far as I am concerned, as my attitude to this court will always be the same." The court then sentenced him to death.

Over 77,000 people signed a petition for a reprieve but the Fianna Fáil Government was determined to execute Charlie. His last letter was to his friend Liam Burke in Belfast.

At 8am on Friday 1 December 1944, Charlie Kerins was hanged in Mountjoy Jail by the English hangman Albert Pierpoint.
