6 depressing lessons from 6 years in businessā€¦

On this day six years ago, I walked out of the office of my corporate job for the last time.

I turned my back on an Ā£80k salary, company car, incredible pension, and guaranteed career progression.

I traded everything for an online fitness business that was generating Ā£950/month. I had no car, no pension, and no guarantees anything would work.

I had six months of savings. Six months to figure out how to transform a simple side hustle into a bonafide business.

Six years later, my business turns over several times my old salary. And I get to do it all with total freedom.

I like to think Iā€™m doing alright.

So, here are...

6 lessons Iā€™ve learned about running successful online businesses in the last six years.

1ļøāƒ£ You canā€™t expect a full-time wage from part-time effort.
ā€ØSide hustles are great, but youā€™ll never build the business you want if youā€™ve always got your eye on something else.

This needs your FULL focus.ā€Ø
2ļøāƒ£ Find a way to survive.
ā€ØWhen youā€™re starting out, survival is the name of the game. The good work you do now wonā€™t pay off immediately. So, ensure you have a way to stay in business.

You NEED the luxury of time.ā€Øā€Ø3ļøāƒ£ Entrepreneurship is a lonely road, so invest time in your network.
ā€ØWhen everything becomes your responsibility, itā€™s easy to feel the stress and strain. Take the time to build a network of peers that help keep you sane.ā€Øā€Ø4ļøāƒ£ A good mentor stacks the odds of success in your favour.
ā€ØIā€™ve been fortunate to have several fantastic mentors (and some tormentors, too). Every investment I made in a good mentor led to a dramatic revenue increase. ā€Øā€Ø5ļøāƒ£ Take the risk.
ā€ØYou can chart the moments when my business grew by looking at when I took the biggest risks. Donā€™t be reckless.

But staying safe stifles your growth.ā€Øā€Ø6ļøāƒ£ Nothing matters in the end.
ā€ØIā€™ll be dead 60 years from now. Few people will remember me, my life, or my work. Even fewer will remember the Reel I agonised over on March 3rd, 2021.
ā€ØAll the stuff youā€™re worrying about now will soon be a distant memory. So start doing whatever you want.

Likes, Views, and Followers are far less important for the health and growth of your business.

Just make sure you know your priorities.

The TRUE indicators of business growth are Email Subscribers, Calls Booked (if you sell using sales calls), and Sales. If these don't move forward, having great social media metrics doesn't count for much.

So, yes, social media data is worth looking at, but consider it in the context of all the information you have.

Don't base strategic decisions on the wrong information.

"Do I need to talk on camera?" is the wrong question.

"What content should I create to generate more leads?" is a better question (assuming getting more leads is one of your goals).

Think about what's best for business in the long term, not what makes you feel less uncomfortable right now.

Basically...

Get your face on camera and start talking. Then, make an objective decision about what content to create based on the data those posts provide.

Rugby is like the Twilight Zone.

Stepping outside your door is a step into a world full of oddities.

I'll give you three examples, starting with Creepy Preacher.

On my way home from the gym, I walk through a park. The other day, I spotted a guy dressed in a full-length trenchcoat staring at a Mum and her daughter.

He was the same guy who was in the coffee shop last week. His strange behaviour freaked Randy out. The creepy guy was preaching from the Bible in the middle of the park.

The fact he was reading from the Bible isn't the important point. He could've been reading Harry Potter or the London A-Z. The creepy thing was the behaviour.

After encountering Creepy Preacher, I continued my walk home and sawā€¦

Green Bear

A young guy was walking towards me dressed in a fluffy, bright green onesie.

He looked like a cross between the Grinch and Bungle from Rainbow. What made his choice of clothing weirder was that he was carrying a bunch of flowers.

Who was he going to visit?

Why was he dressed as a giant, luminous bear?

Who knows?

When I got home, I showered, changed, and headed out again. As Randy and I got into town, we sawā€¦

Earthing Woman

Earthing Woman walked out of her front door 50 yards ahead of us. All seemed normal until I noticed her feet.

She wasn't wearing any shoes.

If you're into "earthing" and feeling nature beneath your feet, go for it. But surely there's a point where walking barefoot becomes a health hazard.

This woman didn't even look like she was enjoying it. Every step was met with a wince and grimace of pain. But she was devoted to the cause. In a way, I applaud her.

In a sea of people milling around Rugby town centre, Creeper Preacher, Green Bear, and Earthing Woman stood out.

But this isn't how you want to stand out on social media. You don't want to be the one acting weirdly to grab any form of attention.

All attention is NOT good attention

Philosophical Simon Vs Coaching Simon... who wins?

I needed to stretch my legs after wrapping up three 1:1 coaching calls, so I grabbed Randy and took the little guy to the coffee shop.

While editing videos, writing captions, and scheduling content, David, the barista, came over to say hi to Randy.

As Randy lies back and revels in the attention, David asks, ā€˜Does he miss Maria?ā€™

ā€˜You know what? I donā€™t know,' I replied. Do dogs have the brain capacity to actively ruminate over things like that?ā€™

I know, I know, I know. A simple ā€˜Yesā€™ would have sufficed. David didnā€™t want a philosophical debate while heā€™s got a queue of punters awaiting their caffeine fix. He was expecting the conversation to go more like,

ā€˜Does he miss Maria?ā€™

ā€˜Yeah. Poor guy.ā€™

ā€˜Ah. Poor guy. Flat white?ā€™

Itā€™s a good job Iā€™m a different guy when Iā€™m coaching clients.

How I use AI šŸ¤– to make more content faster šŸ‘‡

First, I don't treat AI as a tool to take over 100% of the work.

I use various AI tools to simplify my process and enable me to stay consistent across multiple platforms.

Here's a list of the tools I use.

Creator - Caption writing.
Riverside FM - Creating video clips from my podcasts (like this one).
Opus Clip - Same as Riverside FM (often Opus Clip finds different clips).
Claude - Creating article frameworks from podcast transcripts.

And more... But these are the main uses.

Think of AI as a tool to amplify the work you already do, and you'll retain your unique voice while creating more content.

Itā€™s 2008. Iā€™m 27. And I havenā€™t given up on the rock star dreamā€¦ yet.

Sadly, my dreams died in a haze of mortgages, corporate careers, and bandmates who wanted to have families instead of hanging out in dingy clubs that stank of farts and B.O.

Sixteen years later, Iā€™m rekindling the rock star dream. Well,ā€¦ ish.

Iā€™m not about to ditch my business anytime soon (or ever). But Iā€™m using songwriting as a way to disconnect from social media and marketing.

But Iā€™ve hit a snag.

Playing guitar and writing the music has been fun and relatively straightforward. But recording has beenā€¦ a struggle, to put it mildly.

Itā€™s like learning a new language.

DAWS, Bit Rates, Sample Rates, Plugins, Meters, Click Tracks, MIDIā€¦

Iā€™ve got Pro Tools in one window and YouTube in the otherā€¦

Problem after problem leads to YouTube search after YouTube search.

And every YouTube search led to wading through dozens of videos trying to find one that wasnā€™t six years out of date and had the current information.

After wasting hours, I played my trump card.

My mate, Andy, is a guitar teacher, music producer, and Pro Tools whizz. So, I started barraging him with questions.

ā€˜I canā€™t get any sound.ā€™

ā€˜All the bass MIDI is out of whack when I import the file.ā€™

ā€˜The guitar isnā€™t registering volume in Pro Tools.ā€™

ā€˜I donā€™t have the right output options.ā€™

ā€˜How do actually record? I pressed the record button, but nothing happened.ā€™

Question after question. Butā€¦

I got answer after answerā€¦ straightaway.

Andy was my saviour.

By the end of the day, I had one track (almost) done. PROGRESS!

Sometimes, we all need an ā€œAndyā€ on the end of the phone.

Earlier today, I spoke with a couple of 1:1 clients struggling with knowing what to post. Here are three tips I gave them...

1. Create content daily.

Batch content creation is great. But it's not the right approach for everyone.

Some people (like me) find it easier to think of new ideas when you're in the habit of thinking creatively every day.

2. Apply restrictions.

There are so many content formats and endless ways to use those formats.

So, restrict your options before you reach option paralysis.

Choose a couple of post styles and stick to them. Then, expand your styles once you're over your creative hump.

3. Client interactions.

Take ideas from recent check-ins and communication. What questions are your clients asking? What struggles are they experiencing?

Turn these interactions into content.

You should have a constant stream of relevant ideas.

"Meet your audience where they're at."

You hear it all the time, but it's often difficult to translate a sound bite into meaningful action.

So here's a post to help you think about how to meet your audience where they're at with your marketing.

And if you're still struggling, here's an example.

Imagine you help women lose weight and build muscle. It's a rather vague niche, but I'll leave that for another day. You help these women use strength training to improve their health and fitness.

Should you spend time posting content trying to convince people who have ZERO interest in going to the gym to start training?

Maybe. But this is a tough way to generate consistent leads. In terms of their likelihood of buying, they're in the bottom 30% of your audience.

You're better off marketing to women who KNOW they should start strength training and want to learn but don't know where to start.

It's a subtle difference but a crucial one if you want more leads and sales.

An open letter to

Instagram has fundamentally changed in the last 5 years.

Instagram adapted to the growth of new platforms and the popularity of short-form video.

The fact that Instagram has evolved is no surprise. It's also not the issue most creators have with the platform. After all, it makes perfect business sense to match and exceed competitors to retain market share.

This issue lies in how this evolution has impacted the fundamental purpose of the platform.

Instagram used to be a place to build communities, connect with true fans, and where creators could grow a business based their passion.

Now, the platform has reduced creativity to the lowest common denominator. People create content to please algorithms, simply so their businesses don't die a painful death.

Instagram claims to support creators.

Instagram claims it's in their interest to promote content people want to consume.

But the reality is a far cry from these claims.

Instagram classes a view as 1ms of watch time. To put this in context, the blink of an eye is 100ms. This makes a mockery of how Instagram measures what content people are interested in.

It forces to creators to post content containing nothing more than vacuous sound bites, or videos laden with tricks and hacks to artificially increase watch time. The more "success" this content gets, the more people make cookie-cutter content.

Death to any account who dares to stray from the remit.

Uniqueness is dead.

Creativity is dead.

(On Instagram).

My plea is not for Instagram to change the way the app works. Old Instagram is gone for good.

But let's have an honest conversation about the purpose of the platform. If there is a genuine desire to help creators, then remember the core principles that made people fall in love with the platform.

But don't say you want to help creators when your actions are slowly killing their businesses.

I, like many others, will continue to use the platform. But it will feature a lot less in my marketing strategy.

There are now better ways to reach your true fans.

You can use persuasion principles and marketing strategies to better communicate how your products improve peopleā€™s lives.

Youā€™re influencing their behaviour in a way thatā€™s positive for them.

Your offer MUST be different. If youā€™re offer looks and sounds the same as everything else, potential clients can only differentiate on price and personality.

And thatā€™s a lottery, not a reliable system.

šŸ’Ž = Value

Stack the value in favour of the customer. Make the offer a steal by making it incredible value for money.

As Mr Hormozi would say, make them feel stupid for saying no.

šŸ’Ž= Values

The clichĆ© is ā€œpeople buy people.ā€ But what is it about someone that makes others invest?

Well, itā€™s more than being likeable and cracking jokes. People connect with people who share similar values and beliefs.

Create, what I describe in my book Posts To Profits as, a Unique Value System.

What values, relevant to your niche, do you hold? Make them known to your audience, and allow others to connect with you.
