First neolithic digging experience! Excavating rock art in Kilmartin Glen was fascinating, hear all about it in series two of Stone Me (eventually, it's quite a long way off yet). Thanks to Archaeology Scotland and Kilmartin Museum who are running the project for a very illuminating day.

It was a place of pilgrimage for travellers up and down the Atlantic seaboard and near to the source of the magical-seeming Arran Pitchstone that pops up in sites from the Boyne Valley to Orkney. There are a lot of ‘-lithics’ when you start looking at old stones. It can seem confusing, but the one that’s really easy to get your head around is the neolithic, as I found when researching my podcast about neolithic sites in Scotland, Stone Me.
This period is an important and fascinating moment in our history, when we stopped being hunter-gatherers and became farmers, staying in one place for the first time. It’s hard to think of a more significant change in our lives, in what it means to be human, than that change from nomad to farmer.
