One of the most complex and puzzling of neolithic (then chalcolithic, then bronze age, then iron age) sites features in this week's new Stone Me podcast. Cairnpapple Hill contains many mysteries: was the circle stone or timber? Are the big graves inside the modern chamber really the robbed stones from the neolithic circle? Why was it put here at all at the top of a hill, rather than in the more traditional lowland setting? Find out! With Alison Sheridan of National Museums Scotland.

Some of the most exciting Neolithic sites in Scotland are in some of the most beautiful places – think Eilean Leòdhais (Lewis) in Na h-Eileanan Siar (the Outer Hebrides), Orkney, Argyll and Eilean Arainn (Arran) off the west coast of Scotland. So when Matthew Magee hatched the plan to produce Sto...

Hear all about the most incredible new neolithic site in Scotland for decades in Stone Me, the podcast investigating Scotland's oldest places. Hear about the astonishing complex of rare stone buildings that was uncovered only 20 years ago, and about the largest collection of stone tools, neolithic art and grooved ware pottery ever collected. Let the man who's directed excavations there since the start, Nick Card of the University of the Highlands and Islands, tell you this site's incredible story before it gets covered over in summer 2024.

What even is the neolithic?
https://www.stonemepodcast.com/blog/what-even-is-neolithic
There are a lot of ‘-lithics’ when you start looking at old stones. It can seem confusing, but the one that’s really easy to get your head around is the neolithic, as I found when researching my podcast about neolithic sites in Scotland, Stone Me.
This period is an important and fascinating moment in our history, when we stopped being hunter-gatherers and became farmers, staying in one place for the first time. It’s hard to think of a more significant change in our lives, in what it means to be human, than that change from nomad to farmer.

16/06/2023

Come on a journey with me to some breathtaking neolithic sites in Scotland to hear from experts about life 5,000 years ago. First programme in new podcast Stone Me drops 21 June.
