Did you know? The island of Bonaire consists of a core of volcanic rocks with overlaying carbonate rocks and fringing coral reefs. The entire structure was uplifted approximately 90 million years ago when volcanic activity caused by the Caribbean tectonic plate pressing against the South American plate forced the ancient seafloor to buckle and rise above the surface of the Caribbean Sea.

As the land uplifted, coral reefs formed in the shallow waters the surrounded the rising island. As those reefs broke the surface, newer reefs on the edges of the island replaced them. Over millions of years, these ancient reefs became part of the topography of the island. These vibrant coral reefs that cover the west side of the island is what makes Bonaire the shore-diving capital of the world and it’s easy to see why here in this picture that we took while on the island!

Did you know? According to Wikipedia, Bonaire is “essentially a coral reef that has been geologically pushed up and out of the sea. This also resulted in the natural fringing reef system seen today, in which the coral formations start at the shoreline.”

Furthermore this means that the beautiful dives on Bonaire are accessible from shore as well as boat. And the island has done a fabulous job of marking the dive sites with painted yellow rocks on the roadside and yellow buoys in the water.

The most famous point is ‘Altamira Unjo’. This spectacular lookout, at the top of a hill offers travelers and unforgettable you. A short dirt road brings you to the lookout point, surrounded by fascinating landscape and the town’s historic buildings spread below. Absolutely the best views on the island. Located in the town of Rincon, the oldest village of the island and is strategically located in a valley. In the early days, marauding pirates bypassed the island as the town was unseen from the ocean. Nowadays, this hidden valley offers visitors some of the most picturesque views of the island, surrounded by mountains and unforgettable scenery.

The island of Bonaire is roughly 111 square miles, with a width that ranges from three to seven miles and a length of approximately 24 miles.

Being such a small island to cover, it only takes about 3-4 hours to drive around the island. We recommend renting a car. It’s very easy to get around and besides, there’s no stoplights.

Also, don’t be surprised if you see signs for flamingo or donkey crossings! 😂

Finding driftwood art in south of Bonaire
using primarily driftwood that washes up to the shore was quite an unexpected surprise. The interesting thing is that these pieces of art are created by unknown artists, what others would consider to be trash, can be enjoyed by locals and travelers like us.

We took this gorgeous picture of the Bushiribana gold mill that once processed ore from mines in the nearby hills during Aruba’s gold rush of the nineteenth century. The Aruba Island Gold Mining Company built the Bushiribana smelter in 1825 to extract gold from the ore that was being mined in the nearby hills of Ceru Plat; it operated for ten years. Today, its remains are a stopping-off point for tourists (like us) on their way to view the Aruba Natural Bridge, which collapsed on 2 September 2005. It is said that there’s still gold in the Aruban soil, although you would have to be very lucky to find it

LUCAYAN is the most commonly used term to refer to the first peoples definitely known to have inhabited the Turks and Caicos. Lucayans, or the greater Taino Peoples, are thought to have inhabited much of the Bahamas and Caribbean, including the island of Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic today), Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and the Antilles. It’s estimated that as many as 10,000-15,000 Lucayans may have resided in the Turks and Caicos prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the Spanish.

On the Northeast end of Providenciales is Leeward Beach, one of the finest but lesser known beaches in the Turks and Caicos and probably our favorite. It continues east from where Grace Bay Beach ends and this beach surrounds the upscale residential area of Leeward where we had the pleasure of staying, and even the canals are crystal clear it’s amazing.

As one of the top beaches on the island, general swimming conditions are excellent, and there’s plenty of perfect white sand.

It can be difficult to access this beach but if you do you will be rewarded with one of our top ten. Beaches in the world according to us The Worldwide Travelers!

Did you know? With its beautiful turquoise waters, white sand beaches and tropical climate you would think that the Turks and Caicos are located in the Caribbean. But no the are actually located in the Atlantic Ocean—the Caribbean Sea is a long way away but still only about a 2 hour flight from Miami.

Long Bay Beach stretches along the northwest coast of Providenciales.

This stretch of coastline possesses the same beautiful sand and views of exquisite turquoise waters as other beaches on the island. However, there are few resorts on this side of the island.

Visitors generally have this beach to themselves.

Since Long Bay Beach is exposed to steady trade winds, the beach is a favourite destination for kiteboarders.

Have you ever visited TCI or any place in these pictures? Where?

At first sight, we thought we were looking at rocks just in the water past the beach shoreline. To our surprise, after a closer look, we realize it was thousands of Conch shells. THE QUEEN CONCH is a giant marine gastropod mollusk with a spiral shell. There are a few types of conchs found in the Turks and Caicos, yet the queen conch is the best-known, with a close connection to the cuisine, culture, and history of the islands.

Conch is pronounced ‘konk’ (with a hard K sound, and the H is silent). The IPA pronunciation is kɒŋk.

The Queen conch has always been an important source of food in the Turks and Caicos, and evidence suggests that the pre-Columbian Lucayans that once inhabited the archipelago, actually exported dried conch to nearby islands including Hispaniola. Today, it’s a staple of many classic Turks and Caicos dishes, and the conch name and shell is broadly reflected in our culture, with places and businesses named after the giant snail, and references made in music and culture.
