If you haven't yet, please go listen to our podcast episode that dropped last Thursday! It's about our different identities (Black, Indian, bisexual, immigrant, disabled), and how they intersect with us being women in tech. We had a lot of fun recording it, and we hope you enjoy listening to it as well.

Episode 3 of our podcast is up! It's all about the gender gap in tech - why it exists and what we can do about it. Have a listen! As always it's available on Spotify as well as anchor.fm/techgirltalk

Our this week is yet another attendee of the Grace Hopper Celebration, ✨Johnie Lee Fain✨⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“I feel like you just don’t understand the attachment you have towards someone who looks like you, has been in your shoes, and has experienced what you’re experiencing until it happens to you.”
Johnie Lee Fain is a junior computer science major at Villanova University. She was awarded an AnitaB student scholarship to attend the Grace Hopper celebration. Challenging the traditional ideas of who belongs in tech, she is proving how women can still be successful in this industry even if they don’t have a natural aptitude for it from the get go. From dealing with professors who challenged her decision to stay in the major, she has learned to persevere in the face of adversity and stand her ground when she knows something is right for her.

To hear directly from Johnie about her role models, inspiration, and how it feels to belong, listen to the podcast episode dropping on Thursday!
This post is part of our ✨This Girl Techs✨ Series! We showcase a variety of women at different points of their tech careers, and aim to inspire others to follow their passion and share their stories along the way.

Our 👩‍💻this week is another attendee of the Grace Hopper Celebration, ✨Rosalind McCullough ✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Recognize when you can make a change in an organization and when it’s not worth the battle - when you can go elsewhere and do amazing work”
Rosalind McCullough is a PhD student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville studying data privacy and protection. This is her 6th time attending the Grace Hopper Celebration, and this time she’s here in the capacity of Lead Chair for the Anita B’s. She advises women to create a tribe - a group around you that encourages you and supports what you’re doing. From her experiences being treated treated differently as a black women in computing, she has learned how to use her voice and be her own advocate and advises women to do the same. The girliest thing she’s done recently is paint her nails a glitter gold (pictured above!) Welcome to our ✨This Girl Techs Series✨! We cover various women in tech at different points of their careers, and aim to inspire others to share their stories. Our first post features the President of STEM NOW: ✨Pratyusha Pogaru! ✨ .
“Tech permeates everything- its reach and influence is the largest in today’s world. I’m proud of my impact as a woman in tech and I fiercely support diversity and inclusion in my industry.”
Pratyusha is a rising senior at San José State University majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Bioinformatics. She started coding in high school and discovered her passion for programming for life sciences at her first hackathon, where she built a solution for Parkinson’s Disease patients by hacking a Myo armband. Her goal is to make the tech world feel more welcoming for as many students as possible. Her motivation for helping people has driven her to build a community and assemble resources for new and underrepresented students in tech through STEM NOW at SJSU. Welcome to our ✨This Girl Techs✨Series! We cover various women in tech at different points of their careers, and aim to inspire others to share their stories. Today’s post features a girl we met at GHC, ✨Jamie Lee✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“It’s definitely hard. You’re kind of the minority figure at all times. But I think it’s also kind of empowering. When you meet other females and other people of color, you kind of connect with them and you know they’ve obviously been through a lot. So it’s an honor, at least for me.”
Jamie Lee is a student at the US Navy Academy. This is her second year attending the Grace Hopper Celebration and she likes the idea of bringing women into computing and cybersecurity. She advices girls to not be intimidated if they’re a computing major and the only female because it is an awesome chance to get to pursue that goal and expand on possibilities.
Tune in to our podcast dropping this Thursday to hear the full interview with Jamie and hear the girliest thing she’s done recently.
