The American positions are overrun, at great cost to the manpower of the Panzergrenadiers. Once more, the heavy platoon prepares to advance further into the American line. For the men of the ‘Hitlerjugend’ division, the battle for Elsenborn Ridge will result in a costly failure. Unable to take the ridge, the battered division will find itself moved to the Bastogne sector for a series of bloody and unsuccessful attacks.
The survivors of the division will finally be withdrawn from the Ardennes on 9th January 1945 for a brief period of refit and reconstruction before heading east to fight a new enemy: The Red Army.
Telephone messages go in all directions reporting American patrols in the Bataillon area, localised counter-attacks and limited withdrawals. Meanwhile the skies above seem to be continuously full of Allied fighters and bombers.

Unternehmen Wacht am Rhein, the Ardennes offensive, is underway. The Wehrmacht’s last gamble in the west has seen German formations burst through untested and inexperienced American divisions.
In the northern sector of the German operation is Elsenborn Ridge: The westernmost ridge of the Ardennes, towering 600 metres above sea level. Capturing the ridge and surrounding towns would clear the way towards Antwerp and force a peace between Germany and the western allied powers. On the road to Elsenborn, we join a Schwerer Zug of III./SS-Panzergrenadier-Regiment 26 ‘Hitlerjugend’ as it supports advancing Panzergrenadiers on their fateful march towards the well defended position.

According to one GI, deer season was whenever deer were seen. Here is some holiday hunting with the 4th Infantry Division outside Goesdorf, Luxembourg. Shown are Pfc. Clinton Calvert of Bayard, Nebraska, and Cpl. Roy Swisher of Washington, D.C. These men belonged to the 4th Signal Company. Venison and rabbit surely beat D rations. This is a wonderful piece of art from Colourised PIECE of JAKE. Be sure to follow his page to see more fantastic images.
On point.
