UPDATED: The day after The Oldham Times carried this story...

I received this full statement from Helen Lockwood, Deputy Chief Executive who said: “I can confirm that Stephen Irvine has resigned as Head of Planning at Oldham Council.

“This decision brings to an end any ongoing internal investigations. However, we can confirm that the allegations made were not related to his role in supporting the Council’s planning committee nor to the advice or outcome of any planning decision.

“We regret that the details of an internal process relating to an employee were made public before we had chance to undertake an investigation or reach any conclusion as to the validity of those allegations.

“We wish Steve well in the future and thank him for all his hard work for Oldham Council over the years.”

Are drones being used by thieves to pinpoint vulnerable sites before thefts of ancient flagstones?

An Uppermill villager, who does not want to be named, said a drone was sighted near the ancient parish church of St Chads before more than 20 flagstones were taken from outside the church last night.

He said: “I believe the attack on the church was targeted. A drone had been sighted in the vicinity of the church prior to the theft.

“The thieves must have been disturbed because several flagstones were propped up ready for taking away.”

With concerns over Whalley Bridge, DOBCROSS NEWS asked United Utilities for a view on Dovestones Reservoir.

Their spokesman said: “There is absolutely no cause for concern with Dovestone.

”We checked all our dams in the area immediately after the recent heavy rain and none give cause for concern at this time.

”We routinely inspect each dam every 48 hours, but we have increased the frequency to every 24 hours following the situation at Whaley Bridge.

“We also carry out additional inspections twice a year, and an independent inspection every ten years.

“However, Dovestone is far newer than the one at Todbrook – it was built in the 1960s and is more robust.

”We have led the industry by using a reservoir risk tool for the last ten years. It exceeds legal requirements and identifies issues well in advance, so they are resolved before they become a problem.”

SCAM – BE AWARE... sent by Action Fraud::

Action Fraud has received 63 reports about a scam in which fraudsters target people with offers of “low cost” loans or “free” government grants. What the victims aren’t told is that the money they’ll receive is actually an advance payment for Universal Credit.

The criminals use the personal information they’ve obtain under false pretences to make an application in the victim’s name. After the fraudsters have taken their “fee” from the advance payment, the victim is then left to pay back the total amount once their repayments begin.

How you can protect yourself:
Never share your personal or financial information with someone you don’t know and trust, especially if it’s in response to an offer of “free money” or a “free grant”.

Department for Work & Pensions (DWP) staff will never approach you in the street or ask for your personal/financial details over social media.

If you have concerns about your benefits, you should visit www.gov.uk/contact-jobcentre-plus

If you suspect your identity may have been stolen, you can check your credit rating quickly and easily online. You should do this every few months anyway, using a reputable service provider and following up on any unexpected or suspicious results.

HAVE you seen this banner? Gallery Oldham need some help to locate a missing banner from the Peterloo massacre.

This year marks 200 years since people from all over Greater Manchester and Lancashire marched into Manchester to protest.

Currently there is only one known surviving banner from the Peterloo Massacre, which is on display at Touchstones Rochdale.

As part of the Peterloo Bicentenary, Gallery Oldham want to track this banner down.

So, do you have a relative who moved to Blackpool in the early 1920s? Or have any family ties to the Peterloo Massacre? If you do and you think you might know where the missing banner please contact the Gallery.

The Chadderton flag was made of green and white silk.

It’s about 3.5m long by 2.5m wide and it bore the words “Chadderton Political Union, United we stand, Divided we fall, No Corn Laws, Universal Suffrage, Vote by Ballot and Labour the Source of wealth”. On the reverse side was a pair of clasped hands.

Sean Baggaley, Senior Curator at Gallery Oldham, said “The banner may be nothing much to look at after 200 years. It might be faded, rolled up and perhaps even torn and moth eaten. But it has irreplaceable historic importance.

”To find this banner would be absolutely amazing and we really hope to it track down.”

If you think you’ve found the banner, contact Gallery Oldham by email at [email protected] or by phone on 0161 770 4742.

Do you have a great idea on how to improve your local area? Oldham Cares is once again inviting residents and communities to come forward with their suggestions as the applications to receive Fast Grants reopen.
With amounts available from £50 to £500, this funding, which is designed to bring communities together, could be spent on anything from encouraging your local community to be fit and healthy to running a Play Street activity in your neighbourhood.
More than 70 community organisations have already received grants since the scheme first started in September 2018.
Successful projects include an East meets West dress making course run by the Fatima Women’s Group and the building of a Chinese dragon for Spotlight Theatre’s next production – Aladdin.
Breathe Easy, a support and advice group for people with breathing difficulties, was also awarded a grant to continue to communicate with their members.
And it was time for tea and celebration for Chadderton Together after they were awarded a Fast Grant to continue running tea dances for older adults at Chadderton Town Hall – a lifeline for residents who enjoy socialising with new friends.
Councillor Zahid Chauhan, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing said: “We’ve already had some really good success stories come from this funding and we want this to continue.
“These funds are available for the benefit of Oldham, so if you have an idea on how you could improve your area, we would love to hear from you. The application form will only take five minitues of your time to fill out, so what are you waiting for?”

:: shhh... just in case you failed to hear ...it’s Yorkshire Day today in Saddleworth.

And despite the dip in the weather the Trojan efforts of a dedicated team who have been working tirelessly to stage event cane up roses for everyone concerned.

Special praise for Brenda (that’s her smiling and holding the roses) and her support crew from Robert Rodgers who read the Yorkshire Declaration and Cllr Jamie Curley, chair of Saddleworth Parish Council, who placed a garland of roses around the shoulders of celebrated local poet Ammon Wrigley.

Brenda pulled the whole event and country fair together in record time and thanked everyone who had helped with special reference to Marie Whitehead who has been a massive part of this - she has been a very active member in ensuring the event went ahead.

There was a wide selection of stalls and a dog show and other events scheduled this afternoon at King George playing fields Uppermill

NOT a good day for hanging out the washing ... more heavy rain forecast.

But be of good heart ... it’s Yorkshire Day.

Support the Trojan efforts of a dedicated team who have been working tirelessly to stage today’s event.

And I’m reminded of the words of celebrated locsl poet Ammon Wrigley (that’s him pictured). He wrote:

“Home to Saddleworth what more do I need than the hills I love and the men they breed.

“And I’ll roam no more for ne’er have I found more kindler hearts or a dearer ground ...”

Thank you Cllr Jamie Curley, who will be laying a garland at the ceremony this morning.

*****Catalytic Converter Thefts******

We have been notified of several reports of theft of catalytic converters especially from Honda vehicles. A catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system and your vehicle won't work without it.

There are several websites that sell security locking systems commonly known as "Car Locks" however prices vary from company to company. We recommend you research this subject in order to safeguard yourself against this type of theft.

It is quiet an expensive item to replace and inconvenient to find your vehicle wont work without it.

If you are the victim of a crime please report it by ringing 101 or visiting the GMP website and click on the "LIve Chat" icon

News ...
Did you witness a robbery in Greenacres Cemetery in Oldham?

Officers are appealing for information after a woman in her 60s and her daughter were targeted whilst laying flowers on the grave of relative at the cemetery on Greenacres Road.

At around 2.45pm on Sunday 21 July 2019, a man armed with a knife approached the family members and made threats.

He demanded the keys to their car and tried to sn**ch the woman’s handbag before eventually fleeing empty handed after a short struggle.

The offender fled on foot in the direction of Constantine Street.

The two women were left with cuts and bruises and are incredibly shaken by their ordeal.

The offender is described as a white, aged between 18-25 years, of slim build and around 5ft 10ins tall.

He was wearing a grey hooded top with horizontal stripes across the chest.

Detective Sergeant Alex Wilkinson, of GMP’s Oldham district, said: “This was a cowardly attack on two women who were simply visiting the grave of a loved one to pay their respects.

“The incident has left them both very shaken and we’re urging anyone who witnessed this attack or has any information that could assist our enquiries to please get in touch.

“We will have extra police patrols in the area over the coming days so please approach these officers with any concerns or queries and they’ll assist in any way they can.”

Anyone with information about the robbery should call police on 0161 856 4555 or 101 quoting incident number 1875 of 21/07/19.
