🐛Save this Very Hungry Caterpillar Coding activity for a fun hands-on way to introduce your preschoolers to coding!
For this activity we grabbed our magnetic tiles to help out one of our fave characters. We picked this story because E knows it backwards and forwards and we thought the order (sequencing) could help us create a familiar path with the baby steps (code) needed to make up the instructions (algorithm) to get our hungry friend towards his goal weight… big & fat (desired task)!
We started small by retelling the story and asking E (programmer) to watch how we move the hungry caterpillar (computer) on the board when we give it directions (directional coding). Then we asked her to decide only if we needed to go straight or turn to advance to the next green tile on our path to help find the next food tile our caterpillar would eat. Next we introduced the tiles that will tell our caterpillar which way to go (we stuck dots stickers with arrows on clear tiles). Once she got the hang of what direction the tiles represented, we invited her to start placing those tiles on our board. The tricky bit was figuring out which turn, right or left, to use and how to place them on our board to keep our friend on his path to not being hungry anymore.
When she’s independent, we’ll let her loose to “code” without prompting. Eventually, we can make it more challenging by making the board bigger, shuffling the food tiles, and adding obstacles on the path… turning this setup into a super cool perpetually puzzle that can be solved over and over again. Have you guys tried coding with your cuties? What are your thoughts on introducing it to little ones 3-6 years?
