Doctor Micheal Okpara governed the nine states which made up eastern Nigeria from 1959 to 1966. When the military coup of 1966 terminated his governorship on January 16, 1966 the only property he owned was an old bungalow he had in his village Umuahia Abia State. When the Biafra war ended in January 1970 he desired to study Economics in an American University but he could not raise the fees.

In 1974 after he had gone back to brush up his medical knowledge and was in Edinburgh for his membership examination he shared a flat with a foreigner, a West Indian.

The first time I saw Dr Okpara was at a political rally in Enugu in the early 1960’s. What impressed me that day was his pronunciation of the word simultaneously as in Simon. The next time I encountered him was in 1974. This time it was on one on one basis. It was in the city of Edinburgh Scotland the United Kingdom. He was there to prepare and sit for his membership examination in medicine. Dr. Okpara had qualified as a Medical Doctor in the 1950’s at Yaba Higher College but had gone into politics and had almost forgotten everything about medicine, when he was the Premier of Eastern Nigeria.

Mazi S.G. Ikoku, a renowned economist was the leader of opposition. Ikoku used to confuse, dazzle and bamboozle the government side with economic jargons. It got to a stage where Dr. Okpara could not take it anymore. He bought books on Economics and when others would be sleeping he would keep awake to swort Economics. Armed with what he was able to learn he was prepared for Ikoku’s fire. He was able to return fire for fire and there was always thunderous applause from the government side whether he got it right or not. This kindled his interest in Economics.

When the Biafran war ended, it was every man to himself. He first went to Ivory Coast and then from there to the United Kingdom. He was hoping to study Economics in an American University but he could not afford the fees nor did he get a

Peter Obi

Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, who is insisting that he won the presidential election held on February 25, pp on Thursday, produced certified copies of results of the election from six states of the federation, to support his claim.

Obi tendered the results, which were obtained from 115 Local Government Areas, LGAs, in evidence before the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, sitting in Abuja.

Though Obi’s legal team was led by Prof. Awa Kalu, SAN, however, the election results, which were contained in Forms EC8A, were tendered from the Bar by one of his lawyers, Chief Emeka Opoko, SAN.

The first set of results of the election that was tendered before the court by the LP candidate who came third in the presidential election was from 15 out of 22 LGAs of Rivers State.

Despite opposition by all the respondents in the matter, Justice Haruna Tsammani-led’s five-member panel admitted the Rivers state results and marked them as Exhibits PD 1 to PD 15.

Obi and the LP equally tendered results from 23 LGAs in Benue state, which were also admitted in evidence and marked as Exhibits PC 1 to PC 23, while results from 18 LGAs in Cross River State were added in evidence as Exhibits PD1 – PD 18.

On Niger state, Obi tendered Forms EC8A from 23 LGAs and they were admitted in evidence as Exhibits PE-1 to PE 23, as well as that of 20 LGAs in Osun state which were marked as Exhibits PF 1 – PF 20.

The last set of results the petitioners adduced and tendered in evidence before the court were from 16 LGAs in Ekiti and they were marked as Exhibits PG 1 to PG 16.

Why We Invited Peter Obi To Our Mosque ~ Awka Muslim Community

The Awka Muslim Community has explained that their invitation to the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, to their mosque was to fraternise with him as they always did in the past, and to encourage him on his journey to New Nigeria, not minding the falsehoods peddled against him. They said that they had wanted to visit Mr Peter Obi at his house in Onitsha. However, on receiving their invitation, Obi offered to visit them at the mosque and celebrate Eid el Fitr with them.

Speaking at the Central Mosque in Awka during Obi's visit, the Zonal Chairman of Miyetti Allah, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, recalled that Obi never failed to celebrate their sallah with them when he was the Governor of the State, a ritual he continued after. He praised Obi for his visible contributions to the development of their Community over the years.

Gidado stated that under Obi administration as Governor, many of their children received scholarship. He revealed that many of their members were sponsored for pilgrimage to Mecca by Obi, and since Obi left office, that tradition ended. "No Governor has sponsored any of us to Mecca since Obi left office," Gidado said.

He continued, "Some of our members applied for agricultural loans under Peter Obi's administration, and they were approved, without knowing us in persons. Such a thing has never happened. Obi treated us like indigenes and made us feel at home in Anambra. He did not segregate between muslims and christians, nor between Northerners and Easterners."

The Leader of Awka Muslim Community, Alhaji Garba Sarki, in his speech, maintained that the many lies told by traducers to tarnish Obi's image in the North is sad. He said he was willing to tell the whole world who Obi is, and how he has helped their community to grow in the State. He said that the Muslim Community in Awka supported Obi's bid for presidency because they know and understand the kind of person h
