On behalf on the men and women of The North Little Rock Fraternal Order of Police, I want to congratulate Captain Patrick Thessing for being selected as our new Police Chief. Our organization strongly supports the decision by Mayor Hartwick to select Captain Thessing for the job. Captain Thessing has proven himself time and time again to be a man of integrity, strong values and impeccable character. During his career at NLR, he has shown that it is the “individual” who matters and that family is a priority. Captain Thessing demands high standards and expects officers to always conduct themselves in a professional manner. He will ensure that the relationship between the citizens of North Little Rock and the police who serve them continues to improve and will make that relationship one of his top priorities.

Please join me and the men and women of the North Little Rock Fraternal Order of Police in welcoming our next Police Chief, Patrick Thessing.

Thank you,
Michael Gibbons

Our hearts go out to Bucks family, friends, and our Police Department. We will miss you brother!

It is with saddened hearts that the North Little Rock Police Department announces the passing of Sgt. J.L. “Buck” Dancy, 62. Sgt. Dancy is the first Police Officer to die in the Line of Duty in the State of Arkansas after contracting and battling Covid-19 for the past several weeks.

Having grown up with the dream of being a North Little Rock Police Officer, Sgt. Dancy was hired by the NLRPD on June 24, 1985. He was able to work in many facets of the law enforcement profession during his career that spanned more than three decades. Although Sgt. Dancy worked in numerous areas of the NLRPD over those years, he found his true calling as a Detective in the Crimes against Persons Unit of the Investigations Division and, ultimately, as the Supervisor of that unit on two different occasions. The Chief of Police, Tracy Roulston, simply said, “Sgt. Dancy was The Rock of that unit. He helped young Detectives become seasoned professionals. However, I think his best attribute was his ability to lean on his faith and help the families of victims of violent crimes. He has affected so many people. We are all still in shock.”

Detective Ashley Noel gave a beautiful tribute to Sgt. Dancy with these words, “He would tease me every chance he got and I would give it right back to him. He would also offer hugs and he told me regularly how much he loved me. I always told him I loved him more. He was one of the first people to hold my daughter. She would give him a look of confusion whenever he told her he used to hold her as a baby. Of course, she couldn't remember. He was the first Sergeant I met on my first night of riding with an FTO. I remember going into the Levy substation, feeling like I was going to faint from being so nervous. He sat in front of me and said "I know you're scared, but don't be. We got you. You can call me Buck." Since that night, I've always known that I could depend on him as a supervisor and as friend. I will miss him fiercely...”

Chief Roulston added, “I’ve worked with “Buck” my entire career. He was a great friend that you could always depend on. One of things that stands out to me the most was his ability to be a ‘father-figure’ to the younger Officers. Sgt. Dancy always made it known that anyone could go to him and talk about anything. He shaped so many careers as a dependable mentor. He had a good sense of humor and was always willing to help. He would try his best to make you laugh when he thought you needed it the most. Today, the NLRPD lost a great man who truly exemplified the meaning of being a servant, not only to our community but mostly to his family and his God.”

Everyone welcome Ofc Redditt, one of our newest handlers. She "adopted' K9 Jared. She has already been through hander school at Von Klein Stein Working Dogs and is one of the Dogs Protecting Dogtown.

We have another North Little Rock K9 UPDATE. K9 Officer and Department Trainer Joe Smith has moved on to another stage in his life journey. Ofc. Smith has owned and operated Von Klein Stein Working Dogs while also working for NLRPD. Joe has decided to leave NLRPD and run VKSWD full time, training and delivering the best working dogs in the world. Joe’s talents will be greatly missed. Luckily for NLRPD Joe will still be providing us with training, supplies, boarding, and his expert guidance. Joe will also maintain his position with the NLRPD K9 Foundation. K9 Jared has been assigned to a hand picked Officer who will attend handler school at VKSWD in the near future. You will get to meet our two new handlers soon. For now we wish Joe luck in this new chapter.

NLRPD K9 would like to inform everyone of changes that are happening. We are sad to announce that Ofc. Matt Barber and K9 Jax have left the department. Matt has moved over to work for Von Klein Stein Working Dogs (VKSWD). Thankfully Matt will still be part of the Foundation. NLRPD allowed Jax to retire and live out his time with Matt and his family. Thanks to NLRPD for granting Jax an early retirement. Matt and Jax will be missed on the street, but still out at VKSWD, our official training kennel.

Law Enforcement is an honorable and noble profession and those that have chosen this path build bonds of friendship that will last a lifetime. Once you've earned the right to wear the NLRPD Badge you become a part of our police family.

This photo portrays that message emphatically! On the left is Officer Lawrence who recently graduated from the Police Academy and is currently undergoing Field Training and on the right is Captain Bill McCord, 94 years young, who retired from the NLRPD in 1976.

So...it just goes to show. Once you wear our badge you are family - From newly hired to long time retired.

If you are looking to be a part something greater than yourself consider earning the right to wear the NLRPD Badge. Apply online at www.nlrpolice.org

The reason I do this!

I have been listening to several podcasts over the past few years and really wanted to produce a Cop Podcast. I knew that I would be encroaching on the boarders of the Police Departments social media policy if I used their name on my own, so I went to Chief Davis and asked permission to produce this podcast for the Department. And he said yes! So here we are, sharing our personalities and stories. I hope you enjoy it!

Sharing with the community about who we are, will only bring us closer as a community. When Officers and the Public can relate to each other, we will be able to provide a better service to our community, and this is just one way that the NLRPD is trying to help.
