David’s life (6)

1 Samuel 18:3 “because he loved him as his own soul”

When making choices about certain problems, we know that the side of the spirit is right. But at the critical moment, there are many times we stand on the side of the flesh. Some people choose in this way when they choose churches. They know what church has the gospel and is right, but they choose a church that fits their heart.

Most people do not hate David but love him. But the ones who stand on Saul’s side when making important decisions are Jonathan. People do not hate the will of the Lord; they love it. They may love following the word of God, but those who stand on the side of the flesh are Jonathan.

Decisions that are comfortable for your flesh look good at the time. But if you look at the end results, that is the way of destruction. Being on David’s side is wisdom.

Therefore, as through one man's offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man's righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. [19] For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous.

Are you still sinner or righteous?

1 Samuel 18:1 “Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”

Jonathan was King Saul’s son. He went back and forth between David and Saul. At times, it seemed like he was really close to David and worked with him. However, Jonathan still stayed with King Saul.

Jonathan was secretly helping and strengthening David. But even though Jonathan loved David as his own soul, he did not belong to David. One corner of his heart was with David, but fundamentally he was on the side of Saul who was fleshly.

In this time as well, there are many people with a spiritual life like Jonathan. Jonathan knew that his father Saul was wrong. He knew that God had rejected King Saul. And he knew that David would one day be king. But he did not forsake Saul and join David. People who are wandering between David and Saul are like Jonathan.

1 Samuel 16:1 “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel?”

Saul was taller than others, brave, and humble. He was an excellent man, but that was the flesh. The Bible is teaching us that our flesh, like Saul, is getting older as time passes.

Samuel could only be sad while he was looking at Saul. It is the same for us who can only feel hopeless and disappointed while we expect something from our flesh.

God told Samuel, “I have rejected Saul, so you also reject him. I am sending you to establish a new king.”

God did not kill Saul right away. Saul was still in the position of king. But we must remember that God was nurturing David during that time.

1 Samuel 16:1 “How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel?”

God said to no longer mourn for Saul. Samuel’s emotions were still with Saul. But from then on, Samuel went out to David, God’s new chosen king.

Saul is the image of our flesh, while David is the image of the Holy Spirit within us. Before we knew David, we knew Saul. When Samuel knew Saul, David had still not appeared to Samuel’s eyes.

We know fleshly things so much more than we know spiritual things. We react much faster to fleshly things than spiritual things. And we look forward to fleshly things more. Just like God rejected Saul and chose David, we must now reject the fleshly things and turn our eyes to the spiritual things.

Acts 13:22 “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart”

Saul was someone who worked hard and tried to do something. True spiritual life is realizing that you are unable to do anything and giving God the chance to work. David asked God anytime anything happened. He gave God the opportunity to work. That is why God was able to work so much for David.

There is something God wants to show us through Saul and David. Do not try to work on your own, like Saul, but give the Lord the opportunity to work, like David. The Lord wants us to have faith to accept what Jesus has done.

Those who meet Jesus are weak and lacking people. Jesus worked through people who discovered their weaknesses.

Sometimes I wonder, “What would Saul and David say if they were standing before God?”

I think Saul would have said, “God, I wiped out the Amalekites, just like you said. I made the soldiers fast in the difficult war with the Philistines. And I tried to kill the Gibeonites.”

But what would David say? Perhaps he would have said, “God, I did nothing for you. I am just an embarrassment. You did such amazing things for me. You saved me from the claws of the lion and the bear. You allowed me to win over Goliath. And You protected me from Saul and all my enemies. You made me king. And when I sinned, you sent your prophet to let me realize it.”

There is a difference between David and Saul. Saul was someone who labored and forced himself to do things, while David knew he was not able to do anything because he knew his shortcomings, so he gave himself to God so God could work.

After falling off a scaffold during her volunteer trip in Africa, Hyejin was paralyzed from waist down. The doctors said that she would never use her legs again. However, through the word of God, she overcame paralysis and is now well on her way to walking again.

Overcome fear, overcome sin, overcome through God’s Word.

My mom recently received salvation and we had a Bible study through Zoom. It was really joyful time sharing the word of God together.
It was also joyful jogging around my house in Saturday morning! Have a great weekend!
