When the time came for the Coen Brothers to find the music for their Southern period piece comedy, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” they asked record producer T Bone Burnett to lend a hand. They wanted original recordings of old-timey, American folk music. What they came up with was a sprawling mix of authentic bluegrass musicians and contemporary alternative country stars that resulted in a surprisingly successful soundtrack album. Featured on the soundtrack are Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, John Hartford, Ralph Stanley, David Rawlings, and Chris Thomas King, among others.
“In May of 2000, plans were made for the artists on the soundtrack to gather and perform the music from the film at a special concert at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. T Bone Burnett enlisted producer Bob Neuwirth to assemble a team of all star filmmakers.
The resulting Down From The Mountain documents the evening’s concert, complete with backstage preparations and rehearsals. Co-produced by Frazer Pennebaker, the film by D A Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus and Nick Doob captures a joyous and free-spirited celebration of a truly American musical form.
John Hartford died just about a year after this album was recorded, at the age of 63. He was in his prime. John was a living library of old fiddle tunes and river songs, mountain music and lore about the people who played it. Some of it is gone with him; this film is part of the enormous share that he left behind – on records, and with the people who knew him.”
— Joel Cohen, Ethan Cohen, and T Bone Burnett
“If you have any affection at all for traditional American music, the movie is pretty close to heaven.”
— A.O. Scott, The New York Times
Featuring Performances by:
Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, The Cox Family, Fairfield Four, The Whites, Chris Thomas King, Colin Linden, John Hartford, Ralph Stanley

and musicians, made up of brothers

Ralph and Carter performed as

Would you consider them influential in bluegrass music?
This is the banjo picker Earl Scruggs playing with his friend Doc Watson at Doc's home in Deep Gap, North Carolina. Also picking are his 16-year-old son (at the time) and a great picker in his own right, Randy Scruggs, and sitting in the back and just learning, Stevie Scruggs. To the left, sits Doc's son Merle.
Although I filmed this scene more than 50 years ago, it is still new to me every time I see it. Doc and Earl were eager to be filmed. I was eager and felt fortunate to record. I set up a single microphone on a pole in the ground, sat in a seat with my 16mm camera and said to Earl" okay let's go". And this clip shows what happened. It is part of a 90 minute film that I made called "Earl Scruggs: His Family and Friends" that was a PBS special in 1972. The film presents Earl Scruggs with Bill Monroe, The Morris Brothers, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, & Joan Baez.
To be around Earl as he sought out various musicians to play with was like being in the presence of something greater then an ordinary human. Everything that came from him, the music, the picking, the family relationships, his treatment of me, indicated that he was an extraordinary man.
He called what he did bluegrass on occasion, sometimes mountain music, sometimes old-time music, sometimes rock 'n' roll, sometimes he called what he was doing country and sometimes - just picking.

For one historic evening, American music legends Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson and Ricky Skaggs joined forces as the three pickers, to film a concert for public television. The music they made before a North Carolina audience is as relaxed as a front porch picking session, informed by the skill and good humor of three master musicians who contributed so much to the creation and evolution of bluegrass music. With special guest Alison Krauss.
