Shefik is excited to once again serve as a mentor for the Engineering Health Equity hackathon, organized by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Over the past couple of years, he has served as a mentor for multiple MIT hackathons, and he looks forward to sharing his wealth of expertise in technology, business, and marketing with the next generation of healthcare and medical innovators.

This weekend, November 12-14, 2021, diverse teams will focus on working together to narrow their problem statements and identify the specific populations who experience them, eventually leading to targeted solutions.

The areas of focus are:

Diversification of Clinical Workforce

Diversity in our workforce, especially among our primary care providers (PCPs), allows for more ideas and values to be shared within our collaborative medical decision-making model and helps assure patients from all backgrounds feel supported and represented.

Improving Outcomes in Women's Health and Pregnancy

Women, especially pregnant women, face unique health challenges that increase the need for preventive care and frequent monitoring, such as human papillomavirus (HPV) screenings and prenatal care.

Expanding Access and Adoption of Preventive Care

Broadening our reach of preventive measures, such as behavioral health screenings and immunizations, through early and continual interventions is essential to keeping patients healthy in the short and long-term.

Improving Communication of Social Determinants of Health to Providers

Understanding patients' personal identities and circumstances crucially informs how we provide comprehensive care. We want to make sharing social determinants of health information as comfortable and easy a process as possible for patients, by instilling trust, communicating effectively, and tailoring treatments to the individual.

Thank you to Atrius Health and Race to Better Health for your support of this hackathon and its mission to create a space for collaboration among those with diverse backgrounds, to dismantle racial injustice in healthcare delivery and address the social determinants of health.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11. In 2018, Sir Shefik Macauley and Baroness Olga Papkovitch helped to break a world record, in honor of the heroism of Welles Remy Crowther, who died while saving the lives of others.

In his opening statement at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, President Barack Obama told the story about a heroic man (Welles Remy Crowther) who died on 9/11, known only as "the man in the red bandana".

Sir Shefik is proud to announce that the television show "Breaking History TV with Ryan Avery" documented their record-breaking experience, and they were featured in the show's premiere episode.

Find out what they accomplished — amongst a group of dedicated volunteers — and how they broke a world record in the middle of Central Park, in the heart of New York City.

Established in 1861, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has since played a key role in the development of modern technology and science, ranking it among the most prestigious academic institutions in the world. True to form, throughout the year 2020, MIT hosted a series of challenges to empower the world to take action on the COVID-19 crisis, spearheaded in part by Freddy Nguyen, MD, PhD (Co-Director, MIT COVID-19 Challenge). Rising to the challenge, a group of determined individuals banded together to form the initial foundation for an ambitious project named CoWell Solutions (https://cowell.solutions), of which MIT praised in high regard as a viable means for "strengthening the health system", and the project was named a winner by a panel of esteemed judges.

During the weekend of May 1-3, 2020, MIT presented "MIT COVID-19 Challenge: Africa Takes on COVID-19", an inspiring event designed to build solutions for Africa in the COVID-19 crisis. MIT rallied the innovation community to develop solutions towards the most pressing issues related to the COVID-19 crisis in Africa. The academic institution wanted to channel and unlock untapped potential into positive and meaningful efforts to rapidly create and implement solutions that truly address the pressing unmet needs and problems of today. The goal was for teams to design and build local solutions to these now global problems.

Under the challenge of "Empowering the Health Workforce", the problem indicated "informing and motivating healthcare workers facing burnout due to limited time and resources". In response to the challenge, CoWell Solutions outlined a solution and proof of concept via "a platform accessible from urban and rural areas either online or offline, to share information and motivational content with healthcare providers facing burnout and mental challenges".

For "MIT COVID-19 Challenge: Africa Takes on COVID-19", there were over 1,000 participants, and 180+ teams and solutions were formed by members from 106 countries. The winning team of CoWell Solutions was initially formed by individuals from 7 different countries: United States, Algeria, Canada, India, Kenya, South Africa, and Italy.

Also noteworthy, CoWell Solutions recently conducted strategic alignment by executing international projects and multi-cultural events with NBCUniversal, Doctor Dre (former host of "Yo! MTV Raps"), Fortivitum (Lithuania), Munhu Inc. (Zimbabwe), and Hope Academy for Girls (Sierra Leone).

"CoWell Solutions rose from the responsibility of MIT stepping up, through their role as an academic leader," says Sir Shefik Macauley (Co-Founder, CoWell Solutions). "It is profound to move forward over the upcoming months, and release to the general public the thoughtful features we have implemented with our project. Special thanks to Dr. Freddy Nguyen and his team at MIT Hacking Medicine for bringing the world together in epic fashion for the greater good."
