The Myanmar military launched an airstrike on a Camp Victoria, a prominent training camp for pro-democracy forces close to the Indian border, with jets dropping at least two bombs inside Indian territory according to eyewitnesses.

A rebel fighter, requesting anonymity, said that fighter jets dropped multiple bombs on the camp, leading to panic. The rebels said some jets crossed over the Tiau river, which serves as the border between India and Myanmar. Two locals on the Indian side in Farkawan village, located in the state of Mizoram, said that two bombs were dropped on the India side of the border but no one was hurt. Rama, president of Farkawan village council, who uses a single name, confirmed the bombings on the Indian side, which he said had caused “panic” in their village and fear of more strikes violating the border areas. “A truck from our side was damaged by one bomb, which was parked near Tiau river,” he said. “Some people from Myanmar side have crossed over the border after the bombing and people in our village are helping them and the injured. We could see that the bombing was carried out by three fighter jets and two helicopters.”

There was no immediate comment from the military or government media.

Indian authorities did not confirm whether bombs were dropped inside Indian territory. However, one Indian army officer told the Guardian that they are aware of the reports that there has been a disturbance near the border and were accessing the situation. According to the rebel commander, seven rebel fighters were killed, including one woman, in the aerial bombings and over 20 people in Camp Victoria were injured.

Camp Victoria serves as the headquarters of Chin National Army (CNA), an ethnic armed group which is fighting alongside other rebel groups to restore democracy in Myanmar, under the banner of People’s Defence Force (PDF). The training camp is located just a few kilometres from the border with the Indian state of Mizoram.

Colombia's government has announced a cease-fire with the five main illegal armed groups operating in the country in a bid to support peace talks.

The groups include the leftist guerrilla group the National Liberation Army (ELN), along with dissident groups run by former members of the now-demobilized Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Segunda Marquetalia and Estado Mayor Central.

President Gustavo Petro announced the six-month cease-fire on New Year's Eve.

"We have agreed to a bilateral cease-fire with the ELN, the Second Marquetalia, the Central General Staff, the AGC and the Self-Defense Forces of the Sierra Nevada from January 1 to June 30, 2023, extendable depending on progress in the negotiations," Petro said on Twitter.

The leftist leader and former guerrilla called the move a "bold act."

"The bilateral cease-fire obliges the armed organizations and the state to respect it. There will be a national and international verification mechanism," he added.

Petro has vowed to end Colombia's internal conflict, which has been going on for nearly six decades and has seen at least 450,000 people die.

According to the independent think-tank, Institute for Development and Peace Studies (Indepaz), the armed groups still functioning in Colombia — the largest co***ne producer in the world — are locked in deadly tussles over drug trafficking revenues and other illegal businesses.

Earlier this month, the ELN — the last recognized insurgency in the Andean country — announced a nine-day unilateral cease-fire over Christmas and completed the first round of peace talks between the two parties in Venezuela's Caracas.

The Segunda Marquetalia and Estado Mayor Central groups have also held separate talks with the government.

The Syrian army said on Monday an Israeli missile strike had briefly put the Damascus International Airport out of service, the latest in a string of strikes targeting Iran-linked assets.

A volley of air-launched missiles had hit the airport at 2 a.m., the army said in a statement. They had come from the direction of Lake Tiberias in Israel.

Missiles had also hit targets in the south of Damascus, killing two members of the Syrian armed forces and causing some damage, the army said.

The transport ministry said in an online statement that workers had removed debris from the strikes and that flights would resume by 9 a.m.

Earlier, two regional intelligence sources said the strikes had hit an outpost near the airport of Iran's Quds Force and militias it backs. Their presence has spread in Syria in recent years.

The Israel Defence Force did not immediately comment on the attack.

--

Last year, Israel intensified strikes on Damascus International and other civilian airports to disrupt Tehran's increasing use of aerial supply lines to deliver arms to allies in Syria and Lebanon, including Hezbollah.

Syria halted flights to and from the airport in June for nearly two weeks after Israeli strikes caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including a runway and a terminal.

Israel fired missiles at Damascus International again in September, when it also struck the country's second-largest civilian airport in the northern city of Aleppo, putting it out of operation for several days.

Western and regional intelligence sources say Tehran has adopted civilian air transportation as a more reliable means of ferrying military equipment to its forces and to allied fighters in Syria, following Israeli disruption of ground supply.

Iran's proxy militias, led by Lebanon's Hezbollah, now hold sway in vast areas in eastern, southern and northwestern Syria and in several suburbs around the capital.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government has never publicly acknowledged that Iranian forces operate on his behalf in Syria's civil war, saying Tehran has only military advisers on the ground.

The Hungarian Prime Minister was criticised by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry after Orbán's comments in a Christmas interview with the newspaper Magyar Nemzet, in which he claimed that the war in Ukraine could end if the US stopped military aid to Ukraine.

The statement published on the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's website stressed that Orban's recent statements "demonstrate a pathological lack of respect for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people who are fighting the Russian invaders", with Kyiv accusing the Hungarian prime minister of "political myopia".

"The Hungarian leader should ask himself whether he wants peace," the Ukrainian foreign ministry said, noting that Orban was essentially referring to a Ukrainian defeat, although this would also increase the risk of a possible Russian invasion of Hungary.

"Ukraine can only continue to fight if the US continues to support it with arms and money. If the Americans want peace, then there will be peace," Orbán said in an interview published on Saturday.

THE GUARDIAN / MOSCOW - Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu announced on Friday that the "partial mobilisation" of reservists announced by Moscow last September to support the war effort in Ukraine was complete. He said 82,000 reservists had already been sent to Ukraine, "reflecting what the West has called a desperate effort to stop Kiev's counter-offensive with poorly trained troops," the British newspaper notes, while another 218,000 were in training centres. The Guardian says it has not been possible to verify the figures quoted.
