WFSB Technical Discussion

TODAY...
It was another foggy start this morning. Most of it has burned off but we are still seeing some fog (specifically more dense in SE CT) so still watch out for difficult visibility! As rain also continues to spread through the state, it will be a gloomy afternoon. Temperatures are mild and in the 40s! Showers have mostly been confined to the western half of the state this morning but by mid-afternoon it will be widespread through the state. By this evening, we can expect the rain to amp up it’s intensity and come down heavy at times. This storm will not be nearly as windy as the previous ones this season, which is great. Highs inland return to the mid and upper 40s with low 50s most likely along the shoreline.
THE REST OF THE WEEK…
The heaviest rain wraps up quickly tomorrow morning with scattered showers possible through the afternoon hours. Rain totals will be in the 0.5-1.0″ range for most, but some towns near the shoreline may end up closer to 1.5″ of rain by the time all is said and done. Thursday will once again be above average and in the lower half of the 50s (keep in mind our normal highs for late December in the Hartford area are in the upper 30s). With temperatures so warm and lows in the 40s - there is no chance of anything wintry so snow lovers will have to wait a little longer!

There’s a new shot to protect newborns from a serious respiratory virus, but parents may not be able to get it.

A highly anticipated new shot that can protect newborns from the ravages of respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, may not be available (https://e.newsletters.cnn.com/click?EY2JlemlvQHlhaG9vLmNvbQ/CeyJtaWQiOiIxNjk2OTcxMzY0MjI3ZjRjMTMwMzNkYzJlIiwiY3QiOiJjbm4tOWNkMDg4NjJlYzFiNDE4YThkOWIzNzVmMjg5MGMzOTUtMSIsInJkIjoieWFob28uY29tIn0/HWkhfQ05OX2lfTmV3c19OREJBTjEwMTAyMDIzYzEwNTQzMzJiMSxjbjEsaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuY25uLmNvbS8yMDIzLzEwLzA0L2hlYWx0aC9iZXlmb3J0dXMtaW5mYW50cy1yc3Y/qP3V0bV90ZXJtPTE2OTY5NzEzNjQyMjdmNGMxMzAzM2RjMmUmdXRtX3NvdXJjZT1jbm5fMTAuMTAuMjMrUmVzdWx0cythcmUrSW4mdXRtX21lZGl1bT1lbWFpbCZidF9lZT1lM2JOSnhYcXElMkJzWWFHTHI5bHgwJTJCdk9MWXVxcFphb3U4VGtwZ2pQcmYxRDFiSHRFTkdndXFNR09XY2J6WkhJZCZidF90cz0xNjk2OTcxMzY0MjMw/s1h05c26e52) to some families this season because of uncertainties about insurance coverage.

When the US Food and Drug Administration approved the antibody nirsevimab in July, pediatricians and parents were jubilant. RSV fills hospitals every winter with babies who are struggling to breathe. As many as 80,000 kids under the age of 5 are hospitalized annually in the United States with this infection, and up to 300 die, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Every pediatrician is jumping for joy that this preventative tool is available for newborns, because we see what happens when a healthy baby gets this terrible infection,” said Dr. Sallie Permar, chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The new shot, with the brand name Beyfortus, slashed infants’ risk of being hospitalized for RSV by 80% in clinical trials. It promised to be a game-changer for the youngest patients.

But last week, members of the American Academy of Pediatrics met with CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen for a more somber conversation. Many medical practices say they don’t know how to pay for the shot and may not be able to get it this year. Hospitals too are struggling to figure out how to pay for it.

RSV season is underway, and doctors now acknowledge that Be
yfortus may not be widely available this virus season.

“I think it’s really challenging because for the first time in human history, we can prevent RSV in infants, but the ability to get those vaccines or those antibodies is going to be really tough this year,” said Dr. Buddy Creech, a pediatrician at Vanderbilt University who is also president of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society.

“We have this wonderful product that was approved in the 11th hour before RSV season, and now we’re trying to roll it out for it to be maximally effective. It may take just a little bit more time.”

A highly anticipated new shot that can protect newborns from the ravages of respiratory syncytial virus may not be accessible for some families this season because of uncertainties about insurance coverage.

One of the proven ways to slow down the speed of vehicles is with “speed humps”. Last night, Litchfield Public Works installed this speed hump in the business district of West St as a test to determine how well they slow down cars and to ultimately make it safer for pedestrian crossings and reduce the risk associated with the speed of cut through traffic. Thank you to the Litchfield Traffic Safety Committee volunteers and our Litchfield PW Director that have been involved with investigating, studying and the implementation of improvements to make our roads safer for over 2 years. Simultaneously the State of CT is conducting a Traffic Study that is required by the State in order to determine any changes and improvements to their roads, Rte 63, Rte 202, Rte 254 and Rte 118.

*** A HEAT ADVISORY has been issued for all of CT today thru Satruday as heat index values could well exceed 100°! ***
*** An AIR QUALITY ALERT has been issued for today, 11am - 11pm... for Fairfield, New Haven and inland Middlesex Counties ***
***A FLOOD WATCH is in effect through this evening for Northern CT***
THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT...
We are in Alert mode for two weather-related issues. In addition to temperatures warming into the 90s, increasing humidity will make it feel more like 100 or higher at times. Because of this dangerous combination, a Heat Advisory is in effect statewide. Temperatures will quickly climb as we break apart the clouds.
Later this afternoon and evening, we’ll run the risk for strong to severe thunderstorms as a disturbance moves into New England. Not only will damaging wind gusts and hail be possible, but some storms could rotate leading to a concern for a tornado somewhere in the region – we’ll be monitoring the situation closely. Isolated flooding is also a possibility from torrential rain that develops, especially in northern parts of CT.
Storms will weaken and dissipate after sunset. Temperatures remain high overnight, with most towns staying in the 70s. Dew points also remain quite high.
TOMORROW…
Tomorrow, while we end the week on a dry and bright note, the Heat Advisory remains in place as we expect more 90 degree heat that will feel more like 100 degrees due to the oppressive humidity. Temps could get into record territory... for the Hartford Area, the July 28th record is 96 from 2016; for Bridgeport, the record is 95 from 1949.
Hydration will be key over the coming days. Keep cool, seek out A/C, and make sure your pets and friends have access to cool spots with plenty of water.
With our active weather pattern, if you have yet to do so, download the WFSB weather app for free to track any rain or storms that develop, receive forecast updates, also get alerts as they’re issued and be notified of lightning in your vicinity!

THIS AFTERNOON, TONIGHT AND TOMORROW...

Humidity is up and temperatures are in the 80s, giving us plenty of instability for storms to form. Activity will pick up through the afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of CT in a level 1/5 risk, meaning there could be a couple of stronger storms that push severe limits this afternoon. Wind gusts would be the biggest risk, followed by hail. Any storms that pop could bring torrential rain and lots of lightning, leading to an isolated flooding risk. Thankfully, the storms are expected to move quickly, so any flooding should be isolated in nature and clear quickly. Head inside if you hear thunder! If you have plans to be outside, keep the WFSB weather app handy... you can track these storms with our interactive radar and get updates based off of your location!
Lingering showers or storms will weaken quickly after sunset, with a clearing trend toward morning. Lows tonight will be in the 60s. Mostly sunny skies return tomorrow. While dew points drop a bit, temperatures will be higher than yesterday and today. With a westerly wind, 90 degrees will be possible statewide. This likely kicks off our second heatwave of the year inland, first of the year along the shoreline. And it only gets hotter from here!
