To celebrate World Reef Day, we are highlighting the work of the Egyptian marine biologist and National Geographic Explorer, Eslam Osman.

Dr. Eslam Osman dedicates his research to coral reefs, and how some corals manage to thrive in the increasingly warm waters caused by climate change. His primary goal is to enhance our ability to predict "super reefs" or areas of remarkable resilience that capable of enduring future climate challenges. He seeks to unravel the mysteries behind their survival, whether it lies in their genetic makeup or their interactions with the environment. Through his studies on these super reefs, he aims to develop strategies to prioritize areas to conserve coral reefs for the future generations amid ongoing global warming.

I am trying to develop nature-based solutions by establishing a network of resilient or “super” reefs capable of naturally replenishing degraded ones. This approach aims to boost coral natural recovery from disturbances like bleaching by harnessing nature's own mechanisms. My research contributes to the establishment of effective conservation and restoration strategies – Eslam O. Osman
