Vandaag is het eerste kerstdag. Voor veel James Bond-liefhebbers komen de vrolijke deuntjes van “Do You Know How Christmas Trees Are Grown” meteen in hun hoofd. Maar hoe onschuldig is dit liedje eigenlijk? In ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ krijgt het nummer een veel diepere en tragischere betekenis dan een traditioneel kerstlied. Het fungeert als een symbolisch tegenwicht voor de wereld van James Bond, die wordt gekenmerkt door geweld, machtspolitiek en morele kilte. De eenvoudige, bijna kinderlijke toon van het lied staat in scherp contrast met de harde realiteit waarin Bond leeft.
Binnen de context van de film verwijst de kerstboom niet letterlijk naar Kerst, maar dient hij als metafoor voor onschuld, liefde en toekomst. Ondanks deze diepere betekenis: geniet van het vrolijke liedje met de mensen die je liefhebt. Misschien is het soms genoeg om gewoon naar de melodie en tekst te luisteren, zonder steeds naar een diepere laag te zoeken.
