Sunday, August 13 ARE YOU READY?
As many of you have been doing, I was reflecting on the horrors of the devastating fires on Maui, particularly the loss of Lahaina town. The death toll is now officially at 93, but expected to continue climbing. And I'm sure for most, if not all of us, it brought back our own horrifying memories of the Camp Fire.
Instead of being paralyzed with those devastating thoughts and memories, I encourage you to continue to be proactive in hardening your homes and properties, preparing your Go Bags and making a family plan.
Now is also the time to seriously consider getting a GMRS radio. Once again, warnings did not seem to go out in time. The reasons will be determined after an investigation. In Paradise, communication was lost primarily due to power and telephone lines and cell towers being burnt. Our Sheriff, Kory Honea, had his department and volunteers look for all alternate means of communications, particularly those that did not rely on power lines, phone lines or cell towers. The GMRS Radio System that we have now in Butte County fits the bill.
We have an active group on both Bloomer/Platt Butte County Repeaters and also in Mt. Ida and Cohasset. Nearly everyone can reach at least one of the two County Repeaters. If you have any questions or need a radio programmed, just reach out to me. My home phone number is 530-345-1535. Or email me at [email protected] and put RADIO INFORMATION in the subject line.
The county has the Code Red alert system, as well as the AlertFM program.
Stay safe, stay alert and stay prepared.
