We have covered a lot of terrible animals on this podcast, but the Skua has to be one of the worst. That's why we are crowing the Skua as the Best Burglar! 👑 This shameless bird steals the majority of its meals from other birds, even going so far as to shake other birds until they vomit up their previous meal, and then eating the vomit! 😦

🦎 Bolitoglossa Salamanders like this guy may not do much burgling in real life- but if he WANTED to, he could be the MVP of any bank heist. 💰💰💰 His suction cup feet, projectile tongue, and slight stature make him stealthy, quick, and easy to miss. Thanks to for weaving us an excellent tale about how his favorite animal would pull off a big heist. 😆

Don't let this innocent face fool you. This little guy is a Slave-making ant, and yes, they do in fact take slaves. 😱 Slave-maker ants will raid nearby colonies, stealing their babies and putting them to work. Sometimes a Slave-maker queen can even take over an entire colony by smothering the original queen in birth control and then mimicking her scent. 👑

But evil cannot prevail! Slave ants are known to rebel and uprise, especially when their numbers exceed that of the enslavers.

Flies that steal pre-wrapped gifts 🎁 ants that steal babies and make them into slaves 😱 and octopus that could totally squeeze through that keyhole in a bank heist 🐙 These are the best animal burglars!

The Leaf Sheep sea slug (Costasiella kuroshimae) is our winner for the Best Green Thumb! 👑🌱

These extraordinary underwater critters are photosynthetic 🌞 That means that they can get energy from the sun just like plants can! The chloroplasts from the algae that the slug eats becomes incorporated into its body, giving the leaf sheep its stunning green color. The science isn't out yet on whether the leaf sheep can actually sustain itself by 'eating' sunlight alone, but either way this is one awfully amazing (and cute) gardener.

Eastern Gray Squirrels have shaped the landscape of North America, planting thousands of acorns a year and forgetting to come back to eat them. This has given Oak trees the chance to spread and thrive. Seed dispersers like squirrels don't get a whole lot of love or attention, but they are a pivotal part of maintaining biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.

Damsel Fish are destructive little gardeners. Just like humans they clear large swaths of land to plant their gardens, killing coral and raising their algae on the white skeletons. Damsels are picky eaters and will "w**d" any of the algae in their gardens that is not to their taste.

We voted the Camouflaged Looper the Most Fashionable animal! 🐛👑 This tiny fashionista uses flowers as its fabric, taking samples of the flower it is eating to stick onto its own body. 🌺 Fashionable and practical, this allowed the Looper to eat in peace, blending perfectly into its surroundings.

Caddisflies may seem an unlikely candidate for "most fashionable animal." 🤔 But in reality they construct some of nature's most complicated outfits. Caddisfly babies build protective shells for themselves using any material they have on hand- grass, reeds, pebbles. Some artists have even given caddisfly larvae gold to create their cases, with stunning results.

Can you see the crab 🦀 in this photo? Photographer must have had an incredibly well trained eye to spot him! (see more of his amazing photos on his page).

This is a species of Decorator Crab. Decorators are prolific fashionistas in the animal kingdom, 💁‍♀️ dressing themselves up with moss, anemones, coral, and just about any material that suits their fancy. These embellishments serve not only as camouflage for the crab, but also as defensive armor against hungry predators.

On our very first episode of Best Beast we asked the question "Who is the best animal mom?" The unlikely winner of the episode was the Black Lace Weaver spider. 🕷 Even us, as animal lovers, were surprised by this unlikely choice. So here's to all the mothers out there, big and small, cute and not, doing their best to give their babies a good life.

(This photo is of a wolf spider with her babies. If you have listened to the Mother episode you know that an image of a Black Lace with her babies could be a bit . . . disturbing. If you haven't listened, go find it on Spotify, iHeartRadio, Apple, or at the link in the bio.)
