Some new FREE content just dropped over on the ole YouTubes. Hopefully it is helpful to your journey as a Feature Film producer. I used this technique on my first FEATURE and people asked if it was ADR because it sounded so clean to them. The answer is contained in this video. :)

About 6 years ago a buddy of mine shared some short stories with me and if you know me well you know I do not read fiction. I'm more of a self-help type guy and my fiction consumption has always been in the form of TV or movies.

As I read this collection, which he hadn't published yet, I couldn't put the book down. It surprised me and my imagination was going crazy with imagery as I read. No, I didn't decide to become an author but I did decide I wanted to make this story into a feature film. Only one problem, I hadn't gone to school for it and have never been on a film set in my life.

I went to school for Business Administration of all things but one thing I did have was a new found passion for film and a marketing business. At the time the primary source of my income was in building websites and I shot talking head interviews for businesses so I had "some" gear.

Me and my author buddy decided to write a short film script and I didn't know the first thing about writing a script or a story for that matter. Ponder, my best bud, got too busy to help me write the story but he had written a basic plot but it was just too involved.

He was used to writing for books and never had to consider a budget for costumes, props, production, feeding the crew, actors, VFX etc. All I could see when I read his story was logistics and I had no money to make that happen.

After I asked him to rewrite the story with my adjustments he couldn't find the time so I reluctantly self taught how to write a script. It wasn't great in terms of proper structure and following the rules of script authoring.

What I found is that I loved how scripts read! It was super easy to write because I didn't have to spell out everything since I was the writer and director.

As I wrote for what I knew we could afford I reached out to an owner of an old hotel in my home town and he agreed to let us shoot in this amazing 1920's hotel. It was incredible and he wasn't going to charge us a dime to film in it!

The intent for the short film was so we could provide a proof of concept for people with money to fund a feature based on the short. It took us about 2 months to plan, write and shoot the project.

In pre-production I met a guy who had graduated from Full Sail in Orlando. He was a Director of Photography and I had to make a decision on what I wanted to be because I was used to doing everything. I decided to focus on directing and brought him in as DP which was the best decision I ever made.

We had a lot of fun and worked very hard but produced the project. We entered it into film festivals all over and got some rejection along the way and zero financial interest. I couldn't raise a dime even on gofundme. This very educational experience led me to my next step that I'll share at a later date.

All in all the moral to my story is never give up. Believe me I had many opportunities to give up but I didn't. :)

NEVER DO THIS! We really need to talk about something that I don't ever hear anyone mention when it comes to making a film.

So you make your first film then what? There is a saying, "Start with the end in mind." I rarely see inexperienced filmmakers do this.

What I mean is you have to know what you will do with the film once it's done. Is it just to have fun? Is it to take to film festivals? Are you trying to get it into theaters? Do you want a distribution deal?

Nothing is wrong with any of these goals you just need to have one. It will guide every decision you make from day one of pre-production. What kind of gear do you need? How many characters/actors will you need? How much will it cost?

You need to know what it is you want and the rest will start to become clearer. :)

DO YOU NEED A RED TO SHOOT A MOVIE? I had a job on a commercial shoot this week with a "smallish" crew, RED Monstro 8k, and some amazing lens package. Multiple times I thought, "I could shoot this with far less gear and crew. On my feature we only had access to our own gear and all we had was the Sony a7s.

Had a great time interviewing Jamie Kennedy who appeared in such movies as Scream and Malibu's Most Wanted. We interviewed him for our upcoming documentary as a stand up comic. I'm contemplating sharing our process on that with the community. Let me know if this is something you guys want to learn about.

As a course creator I think it's important for me to actively be pursuing projects so I can share first hand experience. I'm working on a documentary and we recently interviewed Steve Byrne. Super funny guy and on this shoot I only had the interviewer, me and a gaffer. Most of these interviews it's just me. Would you like to know more about this process in addition to my feature film? Mainly this course will focus on the feature production but there's valuable principles that can be applied to both genres of film.
