Persons Unknown: The Battle For Sheffield’s Street Trees The resulting book is well on the way to completion :)

Since January 2018 Simon and Calvin have gathered the accounts of well over a hundred Sheffield tree activists to tell the story of the peaceful direct action that ended the tree felling in the city.

Great reader review from Denis King!

'So breathtaking, I nearly ran out of Ventalin.'

I have just finished reading this for the second time and thoroughly enjoyed it. As a Notts man, I have to say that it is not quite Robin Hood but it is bloody well close! The courage of ordinary working people committing extraordinary acts of defiance, against the combined wicked baddies of SCC, SYP and Amey is at times, so breathtaking, I nearly ran out of Ventalin. There are also moments of great wit which made me LOL . I have never met any of the characters in this story, but having read the book, I feel that I know them pretty well.

Hi folks,if you’ve read the book, reader reviews are always the best. Post them here and please don't be gentle with us!

James Hargreaves writes :
"What a book this is.

Truly unbelievable what happened on the streets of . Every word in this book is true, incredible, almost unbelievable first-hand accounts of people who stood up for what they believed in against the authorities and £multibillion corporations — a real battle that mentally, emotionally and at its extremes even physically affected many.

There’s some clearly maddening parts that make you angry that this happened in our neighbourhoods and escalated like it did, yet the sense of togetherness, community and amusement shines through and makes it a funny and heartening read in places. Thank you to Simon, Calvin and all the contributors, not only for documenting the events in this book but for actually being the ones to stand up in the first place."

Definitely give it a read, and whilst you’re at it give The Felling (documentary film about this same situation) a watch too — it is on at The Showroom this week.

From Simon:
"Well..
We have books!
I’ve written five before, but never has a book I’ve worked on before, meant so much to me. I do fiction mostly, but this one is true. My ‘research’ for this book, as it stands, is having been being arrested twice, knocked out cold twice, being injuncted against twice and being given a suspended prison sentence. And I’m here to tell you folks, it’s a lot easier to just make stuff up.
This book is real. It is not a matter of opinion, or even a Guardian reader like myself having ‘terribly important thoughts.’
This book is about what happened to us.
And every single fu***ng word is true."

“I was lucky enough to read it in the very early days, and again more recently. Each time I was totally absorbed, it is a compelling read. I snivelled frequently, felt impotent rage and laughed out loud. I've never shouted at a book before. The LOL moments are priceless.”

'Hi Simon
I’ve just finished ‘Persons Unknown’ and it’s brilliant. Big thanks to you, Calvin, Julie and Sheldon for making this a book and to everyone else involved. Reading it was like reliving it and there were times when I felt again that tightness in the chest as you go over that barrier. The bits that got me fu***ng angry again were thankfully offset by the many times I laughed out loud. There are some really good people in Sheffield.'
