During his trip, he visited Belgrade, Sarajevo, Mostar, Hvar Island, Dubrovnik, Imotski, and many other places. He shot amazing photos that witness the spirit of the time. The incredible photographs he captured stand as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the time, preserving the essence of each location he explored.

๐Ÿ”นIn his photographs, Scianna documented the everyday life in communist Albania, then the poorest and the most isolated country in Europe. He visited Albania with a tourist visa, as the journalists and foreign photographers weren't welcome to enter the country. During his trip, the group with which he traveled was always controlled and followed by the agents. Nevertheless, Scianna managed to avoid the police a couple of times and document the people and life on the streets. His photos were published by Magnum and Italian newspapers in which article he wrote that Albania was a "large concentration camp". That sentence provoked many negative reactions but his words will turn up to be true as only 7 years later, with the fall of communism, happened the Albanian exodus to southern Italy which Scianna also documented. During that time, Scianna recalled his trip: "I remembered the feeling of 1984, I saw the same faces only much more tired from the journey. The square in the port became a large field where thousands of people gathered and finally, the Italians were able to see even more clearly the true face of communism."

โ˜ฎ๏ธ In 1909 the millionaire French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn embarked on an ambitious project to create a color photographic record of, and for, the world's peoples. As an idealist and an internationalist, Kahn believed that he could use the new Autochrome process, the worldโ€™s first user-friendly, true-color photographic system, to promote cross-cultural peace and understanding.

๐Ÿ“ท Kahn sent photographers to more than 50 countries (including those in the Balkans), often at crucial junctures in their history when ancient cultures were on the brink of being changed forever by war and the march of 20th-century globalization. The photographers August Leรณn and Jean Brin were sent to the Balkan Wars in 1912-1913.

๐Ÿ”น Giuseppe Massani was an Italian photographer. He became an ardent supporter of the rising fascist movement in Italy and made a name for himself with the first photo album on Mussolini and Italian fascism. In April 1939, Albania was invaded by Italian forces and soon thereafter absorbed as part of Mussoliniโ€™s new Roman Empire. It was just the right moment for Massani to present Italyโ€™s new territory across the Adriatic to the Italian public. No doubt with Italian government backing, he traveled extensively in Albania in 1940 and produced some of the best black-and-white photos ever taken of the country. His pictures were published in the edition "Albania: testo e foto di Giuseppe Massani" with a final section of fascist propaganda called the "Union of Italy and Albania". The photos in this collection are all taken from this book.

๐Ÿ”นThe Banat Bulgarians (or Bulgarians Paulicians), a small ethnic group, have traditionally inhabited the Banat region, which spans parts of Romania, Serbia, and Hungary. They are descendants of Bulgarians who migrated to the region in the 18th and 19th centuries and speak a unique dialect of the Bulgarian language that has been influenced by the surrounding cultures and languages.

๐Ÿ”นWhat sets the Banat Bulgarians apart from most other Bulgarians is their Roman Catholic confession. They trace their roots to groups of Paulicians, a medieval Christian movement from Armenia and Syria whose members arrived in the region of Thrace, then controlled by the Byzantine Empire, between the 8th and 10th centuries.

๐Ÿ”นIn 1688 Paulicians organized the unsuccessful Chiprovtsi Uprising against Ottoman rule in Bulgaria. Following its suppression, around 300 families of the surviving Catholics fled north to the Danube, settling in what is now Romania, where they established their communities and received existing rights.

๐Ÿ”นDespite their small numbers, the Banat Bulgarians have engaged in literary activity and cultural preservation since settling in the Banat region, preserving their unique traditions to this day.

๐Ÿ”นBlanche Payne documented a transitional period in fashion history through her travel photographs, capturing the shift from regional folk costumes to Western styles in everyday wear between World War I and II. Her focus was on the regions of South Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, North Serbia, and Dalmatia, where she conducted extensive research by visiting museums, remote villages, markets, festivals, and observing and photographing peasant costumes. In addition, she drafted patterns from the clothing she encountered to further enhance her studies.

๐Ÿ”นPayne's photographs showcase the unique variations in costume that reflected both regional diversity and cultural significance. They provide a glimpse into the daily lives of people from the former Yugoslavia and surrounding countries, who are depicted wearing regional costume while engaged in activities such as farming, market visits, dancing, and more. Payne's dedication to capturing the diversity of regional costumes through her research and photographs makes her work an important contribution to the study of cultural history.

๐Ÿ”นOpel car calendars photographed in Yugoslavia were a series of promotional calendars produced by the German car manufacturer, featuring their cars posed against the stunning landscapes of Yugoslavia. These calendars were part of a larger marketing campaign aimed at showcasing Opel cars in scenic settings, and Yugoslavia was one of the countries chosen for its diverse and picturesque landscapes, including rolling hills, pristine beaches, and historic cities. The photos showcased the cars in a variety of settings, from urban environments to rural landscapes, and the emphasis was on capturing the essence of the region and the driving experience.

๐Ÿ”น In his photographs, Scianna documented the everyday life in communist Albania, then the poorest and the most isolated country in Europe. He visited Albania with a tourist visa, as the journalists and foreign photographers weren't welcome to enter the country. During his trip, the group with which he traveled was always controlled and followed by the agents. Nevertheless, Scianna managed to avoid the police a couple of times, and document the people and life on the streets. His photos were published by Magnum and Italian newspapers in which article he wrote that Albania was a "large concentration camp". That sentence provoked many negative reactions in Italy but his words will turn up to be true as only 7 years later, with the fall of communism, happened the Albanian exodus to southern Italy which Scianna also documented. During that time, Scianna recalled his trip: "I remembered the feeling of 1984, I saw the same faces only much more tired from the journey. The square in the port became a large field where thousands of people gathered and finally, the Italians were able to see even more clearly the true face of communism."

Now, finally, in communist Albania, the time has come for them to show all their abilities, skills, and knowledge and to finally realize their dream of emancipation. Some of the excerpts from the book are:

๐Ÿ”น โ€œThe history of the Albanian woman, her transformation into a progressive revolutionary force, constitutes a whole epoch of magnificent and stupendous efforts not only for the present but also for the future of our country. Never, not even during her gloomiest past, has the Albanian woman lacked the spirit of combativeness, of creativeness, her mental and physical abilities, her sentiment of heroism and self-denial.โ€

๐Ÿ”น โ€œWe are happy and proud. / Albanian woman has become today one of / the symbols of new Albania, / always surrounded by flowers, / with her face eternally towards the sun, / with her banner always aloft, held fast in her / hand!โ€

At the same time, he photographed the landscapes and rural dwellers of the Greek countryside, endowing future generations with valuable historical evidence about features of the land and peopleโ€™s daily life. Besides that, of great interest, for both its artistic excellence and its documentary value, is his series of photographs of Mount Athos, which he visited in 1962. Tombazis systematically recorded the architecture of the monasteries, the art treasures, and the daily life of the monks in the Athos community.

๐Ÿ”นRudolf Bruner-Dvoล™รกk was one of the best Czech photographers. In 1906 he traveled to Bosnia where he shot amazing photos mostly of the Cazin area. Bruner-Dvoล™รกk is described as a "moment photographer" which is visible in his photos. He was fascinated by the distinctive atmosphere of the Balkans, the street scenes, of which the pijaca (local word for โ€œmarketโ€) proved most appealing to him. The market in Cazin was known far and wide and it was an important social event held every Friday. Besides that, he paid great attention to documenting the religious life of the town, as well as the clothes that Muslims and Christians wore. His photos are dominated by Muslims in various situations as he was most likely fascinated by them because of their Otherness. Upon returning from Cazin, he published his photos in ฤŒeskรฝ svฤ›t, presenting the unusual qualities of the land which he had just visited. Cazin was described to his Austro-Hungarian audience as an โ€œuncorrupt little Turkeyโ€ which shows his stereotypical perception of the Balkans. Nevertheless, today photos are an important record of life in BiH at the beginning of the 20th century.

๐Ÿ”นThe Julian Alps are the highest mountain group in Slovenia and, together with their highest peak Triglav, they represent the symbol of the Slovenian nation. Appropriate to their majesty, they were named after Gaius Julius Caesar who built the road there. Most of the Julian Alps are covered by the Triglav National Park, depicted in these photos. Lakes, rivers, valleys, and biological diversity are part of this breathtaking miracle of nature, which Slovenians take care of and are proud of.

๐Ÿ”น Hielscher explains how he made the "Romania 1933" photo album: โ€œIn 1931, I was invited by the Romanian Government to travel as a guest to Romania and to compile a photo book. On the eve of my trip, a well-known writer asked me in amazement: โ€œWhy waste your precious time with this work? What will you find special in Romania?". Many must have the same opinion. How little is known about this countryโ€ฆ โ€

๐Ÿ”น "In addition to the satisfaction I felt working, I was also grieved that the entire Romanian people are threatened by a cruel enemy because the culture of this country blessed by the sun is approaching the heavy clouds of the West: the dust of civilization that stifles any life full of color. Some villages have been shrouded; the gray cloud increasingly covers the ancestral tools and the cheerful color of the costumes, drowning them in the faded monochrome of fashion everywhere. This is how people with an artistic sense gradually lose their ancient appearance. That is why I gave in these photos so much importance to the popular life to the detriment of the landscape. It seems to me that I could thus save through my book, for future times, what is slowly and continually doomed. May a favorable fate keep the people of these mountains, valleys, and plains for a long time, in their beauty and spontaneity. โ€

๐Ÿ”น This photo album shows the various rich folk costumes and ethnic diversity of Romania.
