❗Today we are going to talk about some types of Cognitive Distortions. These are basically exaggerated ways of our thinking - usually negative and often inaccurate.

❌ Polarised thinking - Basically, I am either great at something or I am really bad at it
❌ Mental Filter - only focusing on certain information, mostly negative, from a situation. Thereby, totally ignoring the angela aspects.
❌ Control Fallacies - either thinking you have no control over something or thinking you have 100percent control. Both are inaccurate.
❌ Should and Must Statements - placing Unrealistic expectations on self and other by feeling like one should or must be a certain way.

❗ The Blindspot Bias ❗

✅ Most people believe that they are less biased in their judgement and behaviour than others.

✅ HOW IS THIS BIAS FORMED?
1. Introspection Illusion - This is when we introspect our own thoughts, motives, intentions; but briefly, hence we create mistaken notions about the information and it's value. Why we feel so confident about this is because we feel like we know ourselves well and it's a very reliable source of information.
2. Naive Realism - This is when we see the world from our perspective and believe that this is the objective reality. This is probably why we don't think we have a bias, but we think others do.

These terms are more complex that mine simple explanation. Hence, feel free to research more or just be happy with this 🙂

✅ WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
If we are unable to recognise our own biases, it affects are judgement and decision making. Such as in this case, Actor Meghna was subjected to a Bandwagon Effect (everyone's getting it so I will aswell) and a Halo effect (this person looks amazing so everything that they do will be amazing).

Cognitive Bias #2

❗The Self-Serving Bias ❗

✅ When we attribute our losses/undesirable outcomes to external factors, and our wins/desirable outcomes to internal factors.
✅ WHY DO WE HAVE THIS BIAS? (Some basic reasons - this is not an extensive list)
👉 The self serving bias has benefits for self-worth. This is due to a feeling of a sense of control over a situation which led to a desirable outcome.
👉 To manage the self-image presented to others. However, this can be perceived as "braggy" and people are more liking to counter this Self-Serving bias.
✅ Also known as, Egotistical Attributions, Scapegoating and Beneffectance.
✅ What should we do about this?

👓Put on your objective glasses and evaluate the situation by considering all factors that have may have impacted the outcome of that situation. This is important for self-improvement and allows us to learn from our experiences ☺️

Cognitive Bias #1

❗ The Actor-Observer Bias ❗
✅ The Actor-Observer Bias refers to an error in judgement where we judge others actions as a result of internal causes or characterstics, and attribute our own actions to external causes (i.e. making excuses). This is more likely in situations which have negative outcomes (as explained in this, I must say, funny video)
✅ This is sometimes also known as the "fundamental-attribution" error. The main difference is that in the Fundamental Attribution error only focuses on other people's behaviour.
✅ WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? A Bias is an error in judgement/ thinking - before we judge another person in relation to their situation; let's try and be rational and empathic. Ask yourself - WHAT IF I WAS IN THEIR SHOES? 👟👞👠
