WHEN I SEE MYSELF
When I see myself, I remember the kid who stuttered from nervousness because I was too embarrassed that I'd say the wrong thing. Now, I speak for a living.
When I see myself, I remember the kid “living in the hood,” from the Southside of Chicago (Englewood) who felt awkward going to school on the “uppity” part of the Northside. Today, I'm culturally diverse because of those experiences.
When I see myself, I remember the kid who had to repeat the 7th grade, and was told by my teacher, "You'd never amount to anything." Admittedly, I believed her and eventually dropped out of high school. However, that experience allowed me to easily recognize kids who were "day dreamers" just like me, and I'd help them in any way within my reach.
Still, I wanted to learn how to properly speak, so I enrolled into Chicago’s Columbia School of Broadcasting, there I’d learn everything from my instructor J. Bruce. In addition to CSB, I’d listen to Earl Boston on WBMX, the big radio station in Chicago, writing everything he said word for word and repeating them back, that all catapulted me into broadcasting excellence.
The kid that stuttered, failed and was expelled, eventually became a successful radio host and voice of some of the biggest brands in the world!
But, I felt empty….
In the early 2000’s, at 38 years old, I decided to find an online program that would allow me to close that dark hole in my life, never completing high school. After studying rigorously over a weekend, I passed the test, received the diploma and stuffed it in my safe knowing that I had closed that chapter.
Through my life's journey, I'd always wonder had "I made it" even after many years of seeing great wins & losses as a human being, One thing that remained constant, I’ve never stopped pouring back into the lives of other people because I see myself in them. Besides, it was done for me through my father God, my parents, my children, family members, friends and prayer warriors.
So, to receive this Honorary Doctorate Degree in Humanitarianism means, well… EVERYTHING… because I've earned it and will continue to do the work that's required of me, serving other people.
Now, that this is off of my chest, allow me to celebrate my great accomplishment. 🥳
