A bittersweet match as our local football team (Waters FC), played well but couldn't win as the match ended in a stalemate. Our players generally played well and if it was not a controversial penalty that was being demanded by Groenvlei, we would have clinched the game. The players played as a team from the match preamble to the end except a few mistakes that were being made in the midfield. On a scale of 10, I would rate today's team performance at 7.5.
I would like to first commend the defence which was very solid from the start of the match until the end, and gave Groenvlei FC forwards a hard time. The CB made sure that no ball passed him easily and pocketed the deadly Groenvlei forward known as Neymar. I would also like to commend on the goalkeeper who was good at his job for the whole match. His performance reminded fans of Courtois at his best as he beautifully saved shots that had escaped the defence.
However, a lot still needs to be done for us to compete with big boys like Porterville FC and Broadkraal FC. Our midfielders did not play up to standard as they were out-possessed many times and had poor connection with the strikeforce. The midfielders played like defenders as they were just shooting the ball forward without connecting it with the strikers (kudhuura bhora), which is not expected from them as the midfield must be the backbone of the team. If you look at today's soccer in competitive leagues like the EPL or even the UEFA champions League, you would see that all great teams put much emphasis on the midfield, hence that's why the mid is very important and must play well for the team to victor. To solve this, the midfielders must learn to pass the ball well and improve their ball control as well as avoiding unnecessary blunders.
I would like to recommend the team manager, Boss Mikela to improve on substitutions as his ill-advised substitutions today costed the team.
