Today marks the 102nd birthday of Nelson Mandela, fondly remembered as Madiba. One of the greatest heroes of our times. If anyone could teach the world how to handle 2020, it is him.
While people today complain about the lockdown, Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years behind bars, while housed at Robben Island, west of Cape Town in an 8-foot by 7-foot concrete cell with only a straw mat to sleep on!
He never answered racism with racism but instead rose above it with grace and dignity. He came out of imprisonment wearing bright colorful shirts and an even brighter smile. The message to the world was clear – you can put a man behind bars but you can NEVER break his spirit. His resilience in the face of oppression, perseverance despite brutal imprisonment, and his ability to shine his own light still guide and inspire people around the world.
To Madiba. May his soul forever rest in peace!
