It was Christmas Eve, and the highway stretched out before me, cold and desolate. My breath fogged the windshield as I hurried to get back to my two little ones, staying with my parents while I wrapped up a work trip — my first since their father left us for a mistress from his work. The pain still lingered, but tonight was about my kids and the warmth of home. Rounding a bend, my headlights caught an old man trudging through the snow, clutching a battered suitcase. The sight froze me. What was he doing out here, alone in the freezing night? Against all instincts, I pulled over. "Ma'am," he rasped, shivering, "I'm trying to get to Milltown to see my family for Christmas." Milltown was a day's drive away, and the bitter cold was unforgiving. His frail frame and tired eyes reminded me of my grandpa. Against better judgment, I said, "Get in." I offered him a place to stay for the night at our home — no one should be alone on Christmas. I FOUND A BLANKET I KNITTED FOR MY LATE DAUGHTER AT MY MIL'S GARAGE SALE. Five years ago, when I finally got pregnant with my first child, we decided to name her Daisy. I spent months knitting a pink blanket adorned with white daisies. The day Daisy was born, I held her in my arms, wrapped her in the blanket, and we took our first and LAST photo together because hours later, the doctor told me she died. I screamed, cried, and begged to see her, but my husband, Aaron, and my MIL, Margaret, insisted it was best to remember her as she was. "You have to tell him. You can't marry him without telling him!" my friend Stacy said. "No, he'll be devastated," I said, finally breaking down in tears. Stacy quickly pulled me into a tight hug. Two weeks later, James and I were walking down the long corridor to board the plane to our wedding. My heart was pounding. James glanced at me. "Are you okay?" I forced a small smile, but it felt so weak. I had been pretending for all this time. Each day, it got harder to convince myself that I was happy. Inside, I was anything but. As soon as we took off, James talked non-stop about the wedding, going on about the flowers, the music, the vows and so on. I wanted to scream, to tell him to stop. But I couldn't. Suddenly, the pilot announced that we were entering strong turbulence. My heart skipped a beat. I grabbed James's hand, squeezing it tightly. The turbulence hit hard and the plane was shaking violently. The flight attendant's cart flew across the aisle, crashing into the seats with a loud bang. I felt my stomach drop as the plane suddenly dipped. The entire cabin was filled with nervous whispers and a few gasps of fear.
