To all the Bay Watch Fans, which includes me, we say goodbye to darling Michael Newman.
He was the only cast member on the show who was actually a lifeguard. Having worked as a Los Angeles County lifeguard for 20 years, beginning at age 10 as a Santa Monica Junior Lifeguard.

Happy Heavenly Birthday to singer and actress Julie London (1926-2000) ✹.

Born in California to parents in show business, London made her professional debut singing on her parents’ radio show at just 3 years old. Although she performed in local nightclubs as a teenager, it was a chance meeting with famed agent Sue Carol (1906-1982) while London was working as an elevator operator that helped launch her career. After signing with Carol, London began modeling and acting in addition to singing. Making her screen debut in 1944, she would go on to have acting appearances in films like “On Stage Everybody” (1945), “The Great Man” (1956), “Voice in the Mirror” (1958), “The 3rd Voice” (1960), and “The George Raft Story” (1961). Also continuing to sing, she released her debut album in 1955, the first of 30+ albums during the course of her career. Turning more to television in the 1960s and beyond, she made guest appearances on programs like “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour” and “Adam-12”, but also co-starred in the series “Emergency!” from 1972-1978. She retired in the 1980s, though many of her recordings continue to be used for soundtracks today.

London was married twice. Her first marriage, to actor Jack Webb (1920-1982), produced two daughters before ending in divorce in 1954 after 7 years of marriage. Sadly, their daughter Stacy (1950-1996) was killed in a 1996 car crash, predeceasing her mother. London wed actor and musician Bobby Troup (1918-1999) in 1959, a union that lasted 40 years until his death. The couple had three additional children.

Julie London passed away from cardiac arrest in 2000 at the age of 74.

Las Vegas history continues to disappear.😔

from

Las Vegas is about to see another historic, former Mob-connected property imploded in the name of progress. On October 9, at 2:30 a.m., what still stands of the Tropicana’s hotel towers will be brought down to a fanfare of fireworks and a drone show. The spectacle is expected to be a fitting end for the property that was the most expensive resort built in Las Vegas at the time of its opening in 1957. The resort’s development was backed by “The Prime Minister” of the Mob Frank Costello, who was nearly assassinated, allegedly by Vincent “The Chin” Gigante, a month after the Tropicana opened.

“Don’t p**s on any happiness or kindness that comes your way. It’s a real sin to decide that an act or a moment is insufficient because it wasn’t the one you hoped for or most needed. I did that for a long time, and I became my own worst enemy, as we often can be. Life—when you’ve lived a lot of it, as I have—is a series of acts and moments, and suddenly you’re in a place, a clearing in your own mental woods, and you can see what got you there. It isn’t a sudden thing, an overnight thing, a planned thing. It’s being kind and acknowledging the kind things done for you; it’s showing up and being happy that your legs worked and someone said ‘yes,’ that magical word from which all things flow. You show up and you’re kind and you’re happy and you keep working and you keep hoping, and suddenly there’s your life and there you are. You’ve become something, and that something is a collection of all that has been given to you and how you chose to use it. That is, I guess, my philosophy of life.”—Ruth Gordon/Interview with James Grissom/1984/ Arranged, of course, by Marian Seldes/

“She was ready, and it was glorious. When you teach the young or the eager or the hungry, it’s very important; it’s very serious. Annie was like that, because she had the talent, and she hadn’t had the opportunities. No one—including myself—thought she was any good, and we wondered why she was trying so hard. Well, she was breaking out of the prison of our expectations and her bad luck, and she was extraordinary. In The Actors Studioïżœ she was feral and brilliant, and soon we were doing ‘Two for the Seesaw.’ Annie changed my life not only because she brought both of us success, but because she taught me the importance of always being hungry, of always trying harder, of always defying expectations.”—Arthur Penn on Anne Bancroft/Interview with James Grissom

Happy Birthday, Ms. Bancroft. (September 17)

Lost but never forgotten, the demolished #1914 Irving Gill masterpiece in West Hollywood. 950 North . The Dodge House in West Hollywood was widely recognized as being one of the most pivotal American houses of the . The grand 16-room home was designed in 1914 for and completed in 1916. Irving Gill made shifts from the style of the time, with sloped roofs in fashion at this time. This house also broke from traditional in its symmetrical house , which was quite garde at the turn of the last century. The home featured technological and stylistic innovations, including an early garbage disposal, flush doors that swung on hidden hinges or slid into walls, a central vacuum cleaning system, an automatic car wash in the garage, sheet-metal doors, natural and unadorned natural wood surfaces with no molding and skylights that flowed in the famous sunlight. Gill built the home of concrete and had the idea to celebrate the concrete as “architectural importance of stone.” This home predates many European flat roofed homes off the International style and and was a prototype for modernist design popularized in Los Angeles many years later. The home suggests what a grand home would become. The home was torn down in #1970 and replaced by apartments. This is why we must save what legacy we have remaining!! .

“Some people think that anyone could sing jazz, but they can’t. It’s a gift of learning how to syncopate but it’s also a spirit that you’re either born with or you’re not. And Amy was born with that spirit.” - Tony Bennett

Today, we honor Amy Winehouse on what would have been her 41st birthday. Her talent and spirit live on through her music. 🕊

“I’m a firm believer in isolation. I think you just have to get away from things—including yourself—every once in a while. To think clearly; to see things properly. Sometimes we just don’t operate properly, you know. We get stupid or fuzzy or weak, and it’s time to lie down or get away from everyone and work it out.

“I think it’s impossible to be around other people all the time. You can’t think; you can’t get it together. So go away. Enjoy the quiet. I believe in an inner voice or a quiet voice that balances you. I believe in perspective, and you can get it from friends—you can even get it from enemies—but you get it best when you’re alone.

“I like isolation. Especially with idiots. Nothing defeats an idiot and his ways like isolation. Shut him down. Cut off the air supply. I no longer give attention to anything I don’t care for or need or enjoy. Shut it down. Never defend yourself against an idiot. Let the last idiotic word be theirs. Isolation: One of the greatest things.”—Katharine Hepburn
