Welcome to the latest edition of The Wyrd Ways Rock Show.

As per usual, there's loads of new stuff, including Scene Queen's new one, a track from Dave Ellefson's new band, Dieth and a track from brand new Nottingham-based band, Alt Blk Era. Obviously that's not all. Heading for two hours of top class Metal:

There is a new edition of the Wyrd Ways Rock Show in production, but currently life and some musical choices I'm still not quite happy with are getting in the way.

Also some of the artists I'm wanting to play are a little difficult to track down on CD, and I'm not struck with buying MP3s. I'm old. I prefer physical product, OK?

Well, I've done it. I'm back. Wyrd Ways Rock Show v3-01. Metal just the way you like it.https://www.podomatic.com/pod...

Didn't really know if I was ever going to be typing anything here ever again! Welcome back to The Wyrd Ways Rock Show. Taking everything back to basics, the plan is just to play new stuff that excites me and that I like. That's the long and the short of it - it's stuff I like. If you like it too, so...

Is it time? Am I ready to throw myself back into The Wyrd Ways Rock Show again? I've come back to Facebook for news on games shops that don't use Twitter (where most of my social media time is spent these days)... and some of the posts brought back memories of good times and good people... and hard work.

So that's something to ponder on.

If any of my musician/PR friends want to chime in with recommendations of bands to check out that I might have missed, I could definitely do with the inspiration, and that might be just the jolt needed.

British thrash metal unit EVILE has signed a worldwide contract with Na**lm Records!

Since their formation in 2004, EVILE has been turning heads and taking names – delivering four pure thrash offerings blended with an uncompromising death metal attack. EVILE are known for explosive and captivating live shows, having performed at Wacken Open Air, Bloodstock Festival and Hellfest and with bands like Megadeth, Kreator and Amon Amarth. With their current discography, the four-piece have been tearing up the scene with a raucous new take on the classic thrash metal sound.

Since recently announcing some exciting new line-up changes with the talented Ol Drake on vocals/guitar and new member Adam Smith of RipTide as rhythm guitarist, they are now more than ready to drop some new material. EVILE are currently in the studio recording the long awaited follow up to their 2013 release Skull. More exciting news to come in early 2021 ...

Ol Drake, EVILE, on the signing:
"We're extremely excited to announce our signing to Na**lm Records! We'd heard a lot of great things about Na**lm over the years and it's an honor to join the ranks of some excellent bands. EVILE haven't released any music since 2013 so we promise to deliver a crushing thrash metal classic which I believe will surprise everyone; even the die-hard "Grave" fans. As previously announced, Matt is unfortunately no longer a part of the band, so I've taken over on vocal duties while remaining on lead guitar too. Also, please welcome our newest member, Adam Smith of RipTide, on rhythm guitar. We begin recording with producer and engineer Chris Clancy on September 17 at Andy Sneap's Backstage Studios. We can't wait for you to hear what we have in store!"

Sebastian Münch, A&R and Product Manager Na**lm Records:
"I am super excited to work with Ol Drake and my favorite British Thrash Metal band EVILE. I've been a fan since "Enter The Grave”, and the new demos I've already listened to sound simply amazing! Expect a monster of an album in 2021! Welcome to the Na**lm family!"

Imperative PR are delighted and extremely proud to announce that Solitary have signed a new deal with German label Metalville Records. Metalville Records was founded in 2008 by Chris Boltendahl of Grave Digger and former Nuclear Blast A&R man Holger Koch and has gone from strength to strength over the last twelve years – picking up gold and silver discs for their artists, along with Metal Hammer award nominations and chart placings in Sweden, Japan, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France, the UK and USA. Now established as a major player in the rock and metal market, Metalville is home to internationally successful artists like Ugly Kid Joe, Lee Aaron, Foghat, Dog Eat Dog and many more.
Solitary have repaid the faith of Metalville by delivering a new album that is far and away the strongest of their twenty five year career. The Truth Behind The Lies will not only satisfy the band’s dedicated hardcore following, but capture the hearts of a whole new legion of fans. Along with renowned producer Simon Efemey (Amorphis, Na**lm Death, Paradise Lost etc) Solitary have worked incredibly hard to produce an album packed with absolute thrash classics, with a sound that is second to none. All packaged in some stunning artwork from the legendary Koot (Girlschool, Saxon, The Almighty etc), who also created the cover for Solitary’s limited edition anniversary EP, XXV, this is the perfect way to begin this exciting new chapter in the Solitary story.
Speaking about the new deal Solitary's frontman Rich Sherrington said:
"Given the current global uncertainty it’s an amazing feeling to be starting the next chapter in the Solitary journey. Securing a record label in the metal stronghold that is Germany is a big enough deal, but then when we factor in the stature of Metalville it’s is a dream come true. UK Thrash is the strongest it’s been since the late eighties it’s great to be putting out a brand new album in the midst of this."
It’s been a hell of a ride from the pubs and clubs of the north of England to the stage of the Bloodstock Festival, where Solitary triumphed in 2019 and the roster of Metalville Records. Despite all the setbacks along the way Solitary have simply refused to give up. The pledge they made when this band began still holds true...they still promise to thrash forever.

Two years ago I decided to walk away from The Wyrd Ways Rock Show. I was at the SOS Festival in Manchester, which I usually love, and I really wasn't feeling it. I was seriously considering just walking away and leaving the music business behind. It just didn't feel like I belonged there anymore. Thankfully, Lynne, Emma and 'Tosh' helped a lot. Honestly, I think it was talking to them that stopped the spark going out completely.

The sputtering flame prompted a rebrand, which then sputtered into a second one, but that too faded out.

Then in the middle of the pandemic that has all but destroyed 2020 (certainly destroyed my chances of gainful employment this year after deciding my teaching career was over) pushing me down to the lowest I'd been in quite a while, a change in medication and FINALLY getting some potentially useful therapy seems to be starting to have an effect. Listening to Moose and Dewsbury on the Primordial Radio Podcast, even if I wasn't really listening to the station very much, started to prod at the embers of my love of Metal and sharing it with other people.

That's when I realised that it was time to bring back something that I'd got a lot out of over the years. I'd made friends, I'd met some of my heroes and had a lot of fun doing it.

It's probably going to be a long time before I'm back to producing a 2 hour show every week like I used to, but the potential to get it back is there. I actually enjoyed putting this first edition of the new Wyrd Ways Rock Show together, which is something I can't say about the last few years (it probably showed), if I'm honest. But the embers are certainly sparking hard. If I can find some new bands that'll absolutely take my breath away, maybe it'll all come back in a rush. Otherwise, I'll just keep feeding it and hope it grows.

If you're not in the or a subscriber on Patreon, the countdown is on... The first new edition of the Wyrd Ways Rock Show for 2 years will be unleashed on Friday at 10pm, UK time.

Following a period of reflection, it's time to go home.

The Wyrd Ways Rock Show is back.

First new edition is nearly finished (got a few gaps in the playlist to fill, then I'll be recording) - until then, as a place warmer and appetite whetter, here's the Original Thrash Hour from back in the Old Days...

Turn it up.

This is a test transmission so I can test that all this stuff actually works. Ooo... not good English, that, is it? Anyway, the point is: The Wyrd Ways Rock Show is back! There's a completely new edition in the works and until that's ready, here's a repeat of an old special from back in the day. Tur...

Thrash Hour incoming. Watch this space.

I was going to write a long post articulating my current general sense of anger and fury about what's going on in the world at the moment, focusing on the abject failure of the UK government's coronavirus policies and the US's rapid descent into a fascist, racist police state murdering black citizens for the crime of living while being black.

But I'm too furious to articulate properly and well enough to do the subject justice.

So what I'm going to say is this:

Ready for a blast of ? Welcome to WWRS: The Forge - 100% Metal, 100% new, hand-picked for quality.
Includes new cuts from Enslaved, Sabaton, Tokyo Motor Fist and many, many others. Find out who at https://wp.me/p7snRV-h5

I was starting to make up the track listing for this edition of The Forge when the amount of new music decreased, so I paused it. The pause is over.

Just a quick note to let you know that there's a slight delay in production of the next edition of The Forge. Although the music is still coming in from Nuclear Blast, AFM, Rocksector, Metal Blade, Na**lm Records, The Noise Cartel, Stampede, Asher Media, Incendia and all the rest, the rate of releases has slowed down. That means the amount of quality new music I'm getting each week is less.

This does not mean there are no good bands out there. Anyone who thinks that obviously isn't paying attention. It's just that since no-one's on tour and there aren't any festivals going on, there's not as much of an incentive to release new music.

Which is fair enough!

There's two ways I can deal with this. The first is to keep my commitment to new music by delaying the next show until I've got a full playlist of new stuff that I want to share with you. The other is to start playing some older stuff mixed in with the new, and for that I'll need your help. Simply tell me what you want to hear. Ask for songs that you love so more people get to hear them.

Let me know what you think in the comments. If you want to help in a more concrete way, you can become a patron on patreon.com/metalscienceteacher. I'm going to crosspost this in a few places to get the word out, so you may see this elsewhere.

What is WWRS: The Forge about? What's the function of this page? Why do I do it?

Three things: The first is that I'm a dyed-in-the-wool and have been since late 1987 and I'm thoroughly sick of the lack of exposure for our type of music. It's got better since I started, but not enough.

The second thing is that despite the likes of Planet Rock, Absolute Classic Rock, Kerrang and Primordial Radio appearing, there's still a lack of radio shows playing new music (of those mentioned, only Primordial Radio has new music as part of their mission statement). The Forge is me making the effort to help redress that glaring omission.

The third thing is that I need more listeners. The more listeners I can get, the more people get to hear these new bands and the new music from the more established bands. The more people get to hear them, the more exposure they'll get, which should lead to more gigs and more new music, rather than recycling of songs from 20 years ago.

So... bands, PRs, promoters and managers: DM me with your bands' music. If I like what I hear, I'll play it on the show. I need to be able to download it. If I can't download it, I can't play it on the show, so it's of no use to me or the band.

If you're not in a band you can help the bands (and me!) by listening to the show, telling your friends about it, and if you can spare a few quid a month, become a patron on patreon.com/metalscienceteacher

What’s It All About, Then?

What is WWRS: The Forge about? What's the function of this page? Why do I do it?

Three things: The first is that I'm a dyed-in-the-wool #metalhead and have been since late 1987 and I'm thoroughly sick of the lack of exposure for our type of music. It's got better since I started, but not enough. That’s why I started The Wyrd Ways Rock Show back in 2008. That ran until 2018, but then because of various situations, I pretty much called it quits. Thing is, I’ve started to get the itch back properly. The Forge is an outlet for all my creativity, of which The Wyrd Ways Rock Show is a part.
