In a significant event aimed at addressing pressing human rights issues in Nigeria, Hon. Barr. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha, the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Justice and member representing Ezeagu/Udi federal constituency, attended the 1st National Human Rights Conference organised by the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) and Human Rights Institute, yesterday the 17th of July, 2024. Hon. Umeha represented the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, at this landmark conference.
The conference, held in Abuja, focused on the theme "Human Rights in the Workplace: The Role of Lawyers." In his keynote address, Hon. Umeha delved into the critical role that legal professionals play in safeguarding human rights within workplace environments. He emphasised the necessity for lawyers to be vigilant advocates for fair labour practices, equitable treatment, and the protection of employees' rights.
"Lawyers are the custodians of justice and fairness in our society," Hon. Umeha stated. "It is imperative that we uphold the highest standards in ensuring that human rights are respected and protected in every workplace. This is not just a legal duty but a moral obligation."
Hon. Umeha highlighted various challenges and setbacks faced by employees, including discrimination, unfair dismissal, and unsafe working conditions. He called on legal practitioners in Nigeria to be proactive in offering legal counsel and representation to victims of workplace injustices and to work towards creating an environment where the rights of all workers are respected.
In addition to his participation in the conference, Hon. Umeha also represented Speaker Tajudeen Abbas a day before the event at the NBA Security Agencies Relations Town Hall Meeting, held at the same venue. This meeting focused on fostering better relationships between security agencies and the legal community, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement while ensuring the protection of citizens' rights in Nigeria.
During this town hall meeting, Hon. Umeha reiterated the importance of collaboration between legal professionals and security agencies. He stressed the need for mutual understanding and respect to ensure that the rights of citizens are not infringed upon during security operations.
"The synergy between our legal system and security agencies is crucial for the maintenance of law and order," Hon. Umeha remarked. "It is our collective responsibility to ensure that security measures are implemented within the bounds of the law, respecting the fundamental rights of every individual."
The participation of Hon. Barr. Sunday Cyriacus Umeha in these events underscores the commitment of the House of Representatives and the House committee on Justice to advancing human rights and fostering collaboration between various sectors of society.
