In Episode 75, Francis and Catherine had the opportunity to talk to Dianna Goodman, founder of the Carolina Resource Center for Eating Disorders and mother of Vance Goodman, with whom they spoke in Episode 63.

Dianna shares in this conversation the challenge of watching her daughter become consumed by an eating disorder, being told she would never fully recover, and then finding full recovery. It has been an emotional journey, and Dianna shared that overwhelming emotion in a beautifully vulnerable way.

This quote is a reminder to everyone--those impacted by eating disorders and their loved ones--of the importance of community. Humans need connection. We need people we can talk to and cry with and lean on. Organizations like the Carolina Resource Center for Eating Disorders and countless others throughout the world can provide that opportunity to lean on others for support.

As always, we are here to support you and want to help you find recovery. Let us know what episodes spoke to you and whether there are particular topics you'd like for us to discuss or guests you would like to hear from.

In our most recent episode, Francis and Catherine talk to Amy Minh Hanh Corey, a mental health public speaker and advocate and singer/songwriter. Amy shares her experience finding recovery from an eating disorder and self-harm with a vulnerable account of her experience in the entertainment industry.

Amy shares challenges she faced with her mental health and the ways in which she was able to find recovery. She turned to Buddhism and learned from it that what we digest--both the nourishing food and the media we consume--impacts the way we live. For Amy, recovery came in part by realizing that she didn't want to starve herself anymore, that she didn't want to be starved of life.

We're thankful Amy took the time to talk to us today, and we appreciate the effort and energy she is putting towards helping raise awareness of mental health.

If you have some time, listen to the conversation and let us know your thoughts. As always, we are here to help you find recovery and hope to provide content that is helpful and meaningful for our listeners.

In our most recent episode, Francis and Catherine talk to Jasmyn Cornell, Miss Fayette County, Georgia, 2020-21. Jasmyn talks about her experience with body dissatisfaction and her motivation for creating "I am S.P.A.R.K.L.E," an initiative focused on promoting body positivity, challenging beauty standards, and spreading awareness of eating disorders and body dysmorphic disorder.

Jasmyn reminds us in this quote that the body positivity movement has made great strides, but there is still more to do. There are ways to make the beauty ideal even more inclusive. Every body is beautiful.

We're thankful Jasmyn took the time to talk to us today, and we appreciate the effort and energy she is putting towards changing the way we all think about beauty and bodies.

If you have some time, listen to the conversation and let us know your thoughts. As always, we are here to help you find recovery and hope to provide content that is helpful and meaningful for our listeners.

Jasmyn talks about her experience with body dissatisfaction and her motivation for creating "I am S.P.A.R.K.L.E," an initiative focused on promoting body positivity, challenging beauty standards, and spreading awareness of eating disorders and body dysmorphic disorder.

This quote is an important reminder that body dissatisfaction impacts people in a variety of ways. While many tend to focus on the thin ideal as the primary factor in body dissatisfaction, any characteristic that differs from our society's beauty ideal can elicit negative comments and feelings of shame.

Our most recent episode shares our conversation with Carrie, author of Diet Pills and Broken Dreams: Stories I Could Not Tell, and an eating disorder and LGBTQ+ advocate.

Carrie shares her story with vulnerability and openness; she's guided by a fierce desire to help others feel less alone and find recovery for themselves.

We share the quote for a couple of reasons. 1) It normalizes the idea that recovery is not linear. Many people struggle to find recovery and have times when they slip back into behaviors they are trying to stop engaging in. That doesn't mean you can't find full recovery. It's a reminder to give yourself grace and keep trying.

2) Carrie's quote also emphasizes the importance of spending time with people who understand you, bring you energy, and help you be your best version of yourself. We recognize that finding friends can be challenging and complicated, particularly when you are dealing with an eating disorder and the isolation that accompanies it. This is a reminder that surrounding yourself with people who understand you can involve following people on social media who promote recovery and listening to podcasts. It can involve connecting through virtual support groups. No matter what, you are not alone.

We hope you'll take some time to listen to the full conversation with Carrie and to reach out and let us know what you think. As always, we are here to help you find recovery, and we want to provide content that is helpful and meaningful for you.

We imagine many people find this quote from Carrie relatable. Small bodies are praised in our culture, and when we struggle to feel good about other aspects of ourselves, that desire for praise can drive unsustainable behaviors.

This is a good reminder to change the way we talk about and think about bodies. All bodies are good bodies, all bodies are beautiful, and all bodies deserve praise.

We hope you'll take some time to listen to the full conversation with Carrie and to reach out and let us know what you think. Were there other aspects of this conversation you related to? Did you learn something that changed your way of thinking about eating disorders and recovery?

As always, we are here to help you find recovery, and we want to provide content that is helpful and meaningful for you. Let us know if there are topics you'd like for us to discuss or guests you'd like to see on the show.

We're really excited to share our newest episode with you! In episode 71, we talk with Natalie Fisher, a college student who found recovery from an eating disorder last year. Natalie started a recovery account on Instagram, , where she shares her journey to finding food freedom and redefining beauty.

Natalie was such a joy to talk to. She dicusses the challenge of finding recovery, but she also focuses on the ways in which it can be fun. Recovery and fun seem like antithetical terms, but Natalie, who conquered fear foods with friends and family members, sought out moments of joy that kept her motivated to continue to fuel her body.

Our hope is that all of you can find recovery. We hope that the community of eating disorder advocates on podcasts and through social media accounts like Natalie's can help provide the support you need. Recovery is possible, and it's worth it, and we are here to help you along the way.

We have some really wonderful and insightful guests coming up, and we're excited to share these episodes with you. If there are specific topics you'd like for us to cover, please let us know!

As always, we appreciate you for listening and reaching out. Thanks to you, we're building a really amazing community of people who are helping support one another in their recovery.

Our most recent episode is a recording of a talk we did for the Science Museum of Virginia in conjunction with their exhibit Mind Matters, which focuses on raising awareness of mental illness.

During our talk, we debunked common myths about eating disorders; interviewed each other about our own eating disorders and how we found recovery in an effort to provide insight into that experience; revealed what we've learned about eating disorder recovery from a year of conversations on their podcast with clinicians and recovery/life coaches as well as individuals in recovery; shared insights into how to help a loved one who is struggling; and answered questions from the audience.

During the episode, Catherine talks about working toward recovery. In some ways, recovery does take work and energy behind that work. But that doesn't mean a person is to be blamed for not reaching recovery in a certain timeline or for having relapses or for not finding recovery. Eating disorders are complicated mental illnesses, and how a person finds recovery depends on a multitude of factors. Catherine Brown, Writer

Our hope is that everyone can find recovery. We hope that the community of eating disorder advocates on podcasts and through social media can help provide the support you need. This quote comes from Francis's answer to the question of how his eating disorder developed. It highlights the problematic ways in which people talk about and think about bodies. Certain body types might be praised in one context and chastised in another, without recognition of the impact that can have on a person. We believe that all bodies are good bodies, all the time. That's worth repeating. All bodies are good bodies, all the time and everywhere they go.

As always, we appreciate you for listening and reaching out. Thanks to you, we're building a really amazing community of people who are helping support one another in their recovery.

This quote comes from Catherine's answer to the question of what it is like to live with an eating disorder. From an outside perspective, it's difficult to comprehend why a person would engage in eating disorder behaviors; they seem harmful and unsustainable, which they are. Understanding that a person's eating disorder behaviors help them cope with difficult emotions might enable friends and family to better support their loved ones.

As always, we appreciate you for listening and reaching out. Thanks to you, we're building a really amazing community of people who are helping support one another in their recovery.

Towards the end of nearly every episode, Francis or Catherine ask guests what words of wisdom, kindness, and hope they would offer to those seeking recovery from an eating disorder. Every response is unique to the person’s experience and every response is steeped in relatability that connects us all. The responses tell the story of recovery as a journey, not a destination. This episode is a collection of those responses to the question “what would you share with listeners who are seeking recovery?”

In this quote, Eva DiVirgilis reminds us that being of service to others can bring real, long-lasting happiness. It gets us out of our heads and away from the bad feelings that sometimes plague us. It helps us to fight back against normative discontent, that voice that tells us we're not good enough and keeps us from being fully ourselves.
