Please join us in congratulating Miami Dade College's Fall 2019 Adobe Certified Associates! The following ONE HUNDRED & NINETEEN (119) School of Entertainment & Design Technology students earned one or more industry certifications in Adobe software this term. This was the largest number of students to have earned ACA certification during a single major semester. Also, much thanks to the SEDT part-time and full-time faculty who worked so hard to prepare these students for the exam and to compete for jobs in the 21st century workforce.

Tommy Demos participated in a 2-day Project Based Learning (PBL) - Train the Trainer Workshop at Miami Dade College, West Campus. Faculty, librarians, and staff explore how PBL might enhance teaching and learning at MDC.

Project-based learning is a dynamic classroom approach in which students actively explore real-world problems and challenges and acquire a deeper knowledge.

Did you know that SEDT professors Steven Roitstein and Tommy Demos are co-facilitating Miami Dade College's very first official PBL-based course?

Film, TV and Music Business students in their innovative class are collaborating in teams to produce marketing collateral for small businesses in the community of Opa Locka.

Wise Up Digital presents at University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill!

Professor Eric Cornish had the pleasure of being invited to present at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill at the first "Achieve Real Research Impact with Adobe." At this event he helped research grad students learn to apply visual media to communicate their presentations more effectively. What a great experience!

Eric had students deconstruct a poorly designed scientific poster to explore fundamental principles of design: color theory, typography, balance, negative space, emphasis, focal point, contrast, repetition, alignment. Participants then properly prepared images to use in a scientific poster. Finally, students created an eye-catching layout with great looking images and type.

Professors Tommy Demos and Eric Cornish attended the Adobe Education Leader Summit, July 22nd-July 25th, 2019 in San Francisco, California.

At the conference, they presented a Creativity Workshop entitled: Unleashing the Power of the Adobe Certified Testing Initiative at Your Institution. Here they shared the secrets of launching a successful ACA testing program at any institution of higher learning.

The 35th annual Distance Teaching & Learning Conference (DT&L) in Madison, Wisconsin, is the premier national conference for online and distance educators, offering them three days of professional development.

The conference emphasizes evidence-based practice, educational innovation, and practical applications of theories and research findings in the field of distance education and online learning. There will be many opportunities to network, share, and collaborate with peers from around the world.

Professors Eric Cornish and Tommy Demos will present a session called Ignite Creativity in Your Student Assignments Using Visual Design Principles.

This workshop is designed to guide and support faculty and instructional designers in developing new, discipline-specific, multimedia assignments that replace or augment traditional written assignments such as papers, journals, and discussion boards. Participants will be introduced to research that supports the importance of digital literacy in online education and will learn the basic principles of visual design. Participants will be introduced to a free, web-based, digital design tool called Adobe Spark and will review samples of student work created with it. Finally, participants will assume the role of one of their own students to learn how to use Adobe Spark to create a well-designed, attractive, multi-media project that replaces a traditional written assignment.

Tommy Demos, Professor of Film, Television & Digital Production earned his third Adobe Education credential this past week, becoming an Adobe Campus Leader. He was first inducted as an Adobe Education Leader in 2018 and became an Adobe Education Trainer in 2019.

Adobe Education Leader - a program which highlights the contributions of innovative educators who are effectively using Adobe tools and applications to promote excellence in the classroom.

Adobe Education Trainer - an individual who provides training on Adobe tools and solutions to individuals and institutions in the education space.

Adobe Campus Leader - innovative primary, secondary, and higher education faculty members at accredited institutions who are thought leaders using Adobe tools on their school, district, or university campus(es). They are advocates for educator-driven professional development and support colleagues and students in developing creative problem solving skills.

We would like to thank Adobe and Certiport for supporting this presentation! We hope that we were able to inspire our colleagues from around Florida and the rest of the nation to launch Adobe-based industry certification testing initiatives at their own institutions.

Professors Tommy Demos and Eric Cornish have a detailed action plan for launching an Adobe Certified Associate Testing Initiative, and it’s based on their own successful experience. How did they do it? By leveraging grants and industry certification funding programs. In this session, they’ll share each step, beginning with connecting to the Adobe Education Exchange, planning the initiative, and launching. From there, attendees learn about leveraging grants for financing the first year’s Certiport fees and non-credit Adobe Bootcamp Test Prep courses. Their action plan wraps up with how-to's for creating buy-in from faculty and students for mandatory integration of ACA testing into traditional for-credit courses, leveraging GMetrix.net and Lynda.com Cert Prep Courses, reallocating funds to finance the second and subsequent years of Certiport contract fees, using college-wide industry certification funding awards to enable FREE testing for students, and requesting to add the ACA Certifications to political funding lists. Their insights give attendees the full picture, so you’ll walk away with a clear action plan of next steps toward this goal.

The Association of Florida Colleges' 2019 Conference on College Teaching & Learning was a huge success.

Professors Eric Cornish and Tommy Demos had the honor of presenting at AFC's 2019 Conference on College Teaching & Learning on Friday, April 5th. Our session, "Transform Your Campus into a 21st Century Digital Playground", empowered faculty, staff and administrators to cultivate a campus-wide digital literacy transformation at their institutions.

Participants came from 26 of the 28 Florida colleges to learn how to prepare students for career success by immersing them in a digital ecosystem that fosters active learning and enables creative and effective communication.

We learned that there is immense value to being a member of the Association of Florida Colleges, the most important of which is the ability to network with colleagues and counterparts from other institutions of higher learning across our great state. It was amazing to meet our extended family of educators and realize that we are all facing the same challenges as we work toward preparing our students for a high-tech 21st century workforce.
