We'll be going live at noon PDT to talk about Remedy Live, a concert film that featured Dylan along with Virgil and Steve! Dylan has worked with The Blockheads, led the Dylan Howe Quintet, played on Ben Crosland Quintet album Solway Stories, and toured with The Wilko Johnson Band. Over the years, he has also collaborated with his father on his solo albums, as part of the Steve Howe Trio, and on the upcoming Guitarscape album!
He even contributed on Yes' 2017 Yestival Tour. Here's their performance of "Don't Kill the Whale" on that tour. Reviewing Concerts by Total Mass Retain, When in Rome UK, Asia Featuring John Payne, and The Buggles
Steven reviews a few concerts he watched online and in-person. On July 13, he watched the Total Mass Retain concert streamed by ProgStock via Stageit from the Williams Center in Rutherford, New Jersey. Afterward, he went to the Forever '80s concert at Pershing Square in Los Angeles, managing to catch When in Rome UK and Asia Featuring John Payne. And just this morning, with today being Trevor Horn's birthday, The Buggles concert from Las Vegas last year available for a limited time on Horn's YouTube channel!
Happy Birthday Trevor Horn + "Video Killed the Radio Star"
Join us in wishing a happy birthday to Trevor Horn, born July 15, 1949! Here's a video of him performing "Video Killed the Radio Star" at the Greek Theatre show Steven attended last year on June 7, 2023!
Horn co-founded new wave band The Buggles with Downes before they joined Yes. In 1981, their hit single "Video Killed the Radio Star" would become the first MTV music video (back when the channel actually focused primarily on music). In 1980, Horn fulfilled the daunting task of replacing Jon Anderson as the lead vocalist of Yes. While there were varying views of the Drama album initially, it has been cited as a favorite among fans over the years.
Horn has had an expansive career as a producer, working with the likes of ABC, Pet Shop Boys, and Seal. Though he left Yes when they broke up in 1981, his career as a producer led him back to the band when they made their album 90125, released in 1983, and really pushed for including "Owner of a Lonely Heart" on the album. He would also co-produce 1987's Big Generator.
In 2004, a Prince's Trust charity concert celebrated his 25 years (at that point) as a producer. Yes members and alumni Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, Trevor Rabin, Chris Squire, and Alan White were present to perform "Cinema" and "Owner of a Lonely Heart."
Yes' 2011 Fly from Here album, with Horn back as a producer, saw the revival and expansion of the title suite, which had been developed with Yes in 1980. It also included "Life on a Film Set," based on an old demo by The Buggles. The album was later remixed with Horn doing lead vocals on all the tracks and released as Fly from Here: Return Trip in 2018. During that year, Horn made a few guest appearances on the band's 50th anniversary tour!
After touring with Seal last year, Horn released Echoes: Ancient & Modern. Like his 2019 release Reimagines the Eighties, it contains reworkings of classic hit tracks, some of which he worked with and some of which he did not, making up a fascinating mixture.
Remembering Peter Banks on His Birthday
Join us in remembering original Yes guitarist Peter Banks (July 15, 1947 - March 7, 2013) on his birthday. What's your favorite Banks performance (within Yes or outside of Yes)? Share tributes and memories in the comments. Here's a video from 2007 of Banks with his band Harmony in Diversity. (Y T link here: https://youtu.be/zHDzt-EFmWg )
Prior to Yes, Banks was in a few bands: The Nighthawks, The Syndicats (replacing Ray Fenwick, who'd replaced Steve Howe), The Syn (with Chris Squire), and Mabel Greer's Toyshop. The latter eventually led to the formation of Yes, a name that Banks himself came up with. The original lineup of Jon Anderson, Peter Banks, Bill Bruford, Tony Kaye, and Chris Squire recorded two albums: Yes (1969) and Time and a Word (1970). While Bruford was technically the first to leave Yes for a bit to study at uni in 1968, Banks' departure in 1970 was the first time there was a personnel change after albums were recorded.
Banks' work in other bands post-Yes would include Flash, Empire, and Harmony in Diversity. In 1995, he appeared on Yes tribute album Tales from Yesterday performing "Astral Traveller," which was his favorite Yes song to perform. In 2010, a project (I remember it being called Affirmative) was announced: a tour of Peter Banks and the band Ambrosia playing songs from the first two Yes albums. However, this got cancelled due to Banks' health problems. Years after his passing, we still remember his contributions to the early era of the band. The reformed Mabel Greer's Toyshop paid tribute to him by featuring his guitar work on the title track of The Secret (2017). And Banks' work with David Cross appeared on Crossover (2020). 2022 saw the release of Flash in the USA: Live Recordings 1972-73.

Yesshift 3rd Anniversary Show - Ep 150
Celebrating the third anniversary of Yesshift with a few topics! An icebreaker topic Dan came up with is the question of what one ABWH song we'd each have liked played on the Union Tour. Then we'll touch on July birthdays by talking about what Peter Banks era Yes songs we'd like to see on a new tour as a nod to him, notable Igor Khoroshev keyboard moments on The Ladder, and Trevor Horn's somewhat recent release Echoes: Ancient & Modern (a covers album follow-up to his earlier Reimagines the Eighties). And we'll collectively give our overall review of the Talk 30th anniversary release. (Steven definitely has a couple critiques that can pertain to Yes re-releases in general.) Tune in, celebrate with us, and chime in!
