Impact of COVID 19 on elderly people
The present-day world is imbued with a sense of despair and dashed hopes. From the cracking of the dawn till the darkness sets in all we hear people talking about is the misery that has engulfed the entire world.
Pandemic brings on the times of hardship for the humanity, clamping down on all the movement allowed. As the world fights the virus and stringent curbs are imposed, people are forced to get cooped up in their houses owning to the safety concerns.
COVID 19 is specifically altering the everyday lives of the older people as well as the care and support they receive. As they stay distanced from their near and dear ones and spend more time at home coupled with the fear of getting infected and death looming on their minds, it’s certainly taken a toll on their mental wellbeing.
The elderly is most vulnerable to mental health issues caused by pandemic. It has a profound psychosocial consequence on them like anxiety, panic attacks, adjustment issues, exhaustion, persistent stress, and insomnia. Above all is the mass panic caused by misinformation and confusion.
When compared to other age groups, older people have a higher fatality risk. In addition to the danger of catching virus, the pandemic puts elders at a greater risk of discrimination, isolation, and hunger. Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on people's lives and livelihoods, as the economy shrinks the ageing population face the bigger question of survival. Also, the uncertainty of economic revival is exacerbated by multiple localised lockdown and disruptions due to the sudden increase in infections.
An old man named George, who runs a small tea shop in K Narayanpura, Kothanur region of Bengaluru revealed that he is facing tough times as it is difficult for him to run the shop due the unprecedented situations owning to COVID 19.
India’s health structure is already crippled and crumbling under pressure , at a time when thousands of people are dying due to lack of oxygen, its difficult to get treatment for other health disorders and diseases apart from COVID 19 when hospitals are already overburdened.
Special arrangements for the aged should be included in healthcare programmes such as the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Telehealth and mobile home-based health care check-ups system should be established. Direct subsidies to retirees, may also be able to help them get through these trying times. The right to a dignified life necessitates such steps.
