Published on Otherwise Magazine (09/13/23): “Tomorrow’s Ken is an invitation to reflect on the humanity of those living within the American prison system.”

As part of Timothy Reed’s larger Tomorrow’s Ken project, Spoon Jackson—New Village Press co-author of By Heart (2010) and The Book of Judith (2022)—reflects on life before and within the California prison system, recites his original poetry (“Universe, “Beauty in Cell Bars,” Winter”), and shares his original drawings. This beautiful 8-minute composition of an interview is completed with Reed’s original music. Together, “Timothy Reed & Spoon Jackson nurture the power of poetry to tell what is to be a student of like and humanity while being incarcerated.”

In the image below is the first three lines of Spoon Jackson’s “Universe.” Visit this link to listen to the rest! https://www.otherwisemag.com/spoonjackson

BODIES IS OUT - OUR NEW ISSUE IS OUT

https://www.otherwisemag.com/bodies

This issue celebrates bodies; in their imperfect shape and finite nature. Bodies filling space, or struggling to situate themselves within it. Bodies defining times and by time bound. Alejandra Pizarro Choy reclaims the female body’s agency across public and private spaces. Laci Felker re-approaches the body through the changes it experiences in sickness. Marina Srnka portrays bodies rejoining the forbidden outdoors. Jerome Berglund becomes witness to unfortunate daily encounters between bodies and objects. Finally, Katie McCurdy challenges the impact of disability on the body’s potential.
