I wanted to take a moment to talk about the Joao Felix situation. This post isn’t aimed at Felix himself and his abilities but the decision making that has led to him leaving the club just six-months after re-joining in the summer.

For what it’s worth, I think Felix could have been a valuable player for Chelsea. I don’t think we got to see him enough, especially in a consistent run of games.

Felix rejoined Chelsea back in late August 2024 for £46.3m on a seven-year contract and was touted to play an important role in Maresca’s squad. Since the start of the season, Felix made 20 appearances across all competitions (12 PL, 5 Conference League, 2 EFL & 1 FA Cup), playing just 947 minutes. In the Premier League, he completed 90-minutes once, and only lasted over 50-minutes in three separate games.

It’s safe to say this important role was never really fulfilled. Now, if Maresca doesn’t see him playing an important role for the remainder of the season, then a loan move is the right thing to do (especially considering his interest to leave). What I can’t understand is how Maresca/the board didn’t realise this was going to happen before he joined. The Felix we signed in January 2023 is identical to the Felix who joined last year (again, not disrespecting the player Felix is).

I would find it really interesting to understand what has happened between the decision being made to sign him in August 2024, and the decision to let him leave to join AC Milan on loan. It would also be interesting to understand the expectations of Felix were when he joined.

This signing just overall feels short-sighted to me and not driven by Maresca. I’m sure there is information that we do not know about, but it just doesn’t really make sense.

Finally, I can’t help but feel for Felix who would have rejoined on the basis of really establishing himself here, but now he’s on the move again. I hope he goes and smashes it in Milan.
