SquareGlobe, Inc. ‘Akpovo’, an Urhobo word, means One World. We love telling stories, stories of humankind from an African essence - stories, on screen, on stage, in spoken word.

At SquareGlobe, we embrace the African philosophy of the union of opposites, of both/and, instead of either/or. Through the SquareGlobe lens, we share stories of the human diaspora; Collective universal stories based on the essence of people of African descent. The themes are unapologetically candid and uncompromising because they embody our power, our value and provide us moral compass. The stori

es portray love, struggles, betrayals, marital relationships, death, fractured family. They celebrate heroes, point at villains, appraise beauty. They are funny, poignant, sad, and in between. For these are the universal, timeless experiences of humankind.

In 2022, we will share the poetry of Sherry Williams, some in writing, some as videos. So, as we close out 2021--with stuff that we thought couldn't top 2020, here is a little something for you!

To Laugh

Today, I laughed
It started out as a tickle
And turned into
Tear jerking guffaws

Oh, how good it felt
How good it felt
To laugh

Sherry and Godwin were introduced as fellow writers and thespians. After Godwin attended a poetry reading of Sherry’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘔𝘦, they discussed their shared interests and decided to produce Sherry’s play, 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘗𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨, as a television series, renaming it 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥.⁣

Their first short film, 𝘛𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘉𝘰𝘹, was selected for BronzeLens Film Festival (L.A.), Black Film Festival, and was Silver Award Winner at Spotlight Film Festival. The short film, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘹𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘑𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘺 𝘓𝘦𝘦, was also awarded an Honorable Mention Laurel Award at the Autumn 2021 London Seasonal Short Film Festival.

“Holding up a mirror to human essence, unencumbered by any barriers; human stories (experiences), warts and all, real and imagined, spiritual and profane” ⁣

Director and Producer Godwin Onohwosa began his film and theater career in Lagos, Nigeria, after majoring in theater at the University of Benin. Acting in several Nigerian film and stage productions, he participated in the growing film and television industry in Nigeria that has led to Nollywood’s success. Godwin wrote, directed, produced, and sold the children’s television series 𝘉𝘶𝘣𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘴, consisting of 13 episodes. ⁣

Godwin also had the opportunity to work with Nigerian intellectuals Wole Soyinka, 1986 Nobel Prize Winner in Literature, and renowned Nigerian novelist, Chinua Achebe. ⁣

After moving to the United States, he developed the theater arts of Soapstone Community Arts Center, funded by Dekalb County, GA. After the success of his efforts led the country to announce the building of another arts center, the Porter Sanford Center. This 35,000 sq. ft. hosts a 500 seat theater/auditorium. ⁣

As a director, Godwin’s vision is to tell stories of humankind through an African essence. “Stories with themes that are unapologetically candid and uncompromising because they embody a moral compass….. Stories that are universal, timeless experiences of humankind.”⁣

While people of color made up 27.6% of lead acting roles in 2019, just 14.4% of the top box office movies were 𝙙𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 by people of color. ⁣

Meanwhile, people of color purchased 50% of tickets for 9 out of the 10 top grossing movies in 2019. History has shown that movies with majority POC casts, such as 2018’s Black Panther, do particularly well at the box office, but the stories being green-lit in Hollywood are still overwhelmingly white and male. ⁣

As seen on our page, 𝘈𝘬𝘱𝘰𝘷𝘰 means “one world.” ⁣

Square Globe Inc. was born out of the desire to tell stories not just of one part of the African diaspora, but a desire to tell stories that represent the diaspora as a whole;⁣

“Telling stories of humankind through an African essence.”⁣

Something we have in common throughout the diaspora is our sense of 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, and this is one of the many themes present in our storytelling at Square Globe. ⁣

Stay tuned to learn more about who we are and what we do.
