College Football may have had some controversy this year with 1 loss Alabama getting in over undefeated Florida State in the 4-team playoff alongside Michigan, Washington & Texas. Luckily next season there will be a 12-team playoff. If that system was in place this year, Michigan, Washington, Texas, & Alabama would have first round byes with #12 Liberty (as top non power 5 team) would face #5 Florida State. #11 Ole Miss would face #6 Georgia. #10 Penn State would face Big 10 rival in #7 Ohio State, and #9 Missouri facing #8 Oregon with winners advancing to the quarterfinals.

Imagine if instead of 12 teams there was a 16-team playoff which would include all 10 conference winners and 6 at-large teams. In this scenario #12 Oklahoma would miss out. If James Madison was eligible this year, they would have likely replaced Troy as the 14 seed. Much like the 12-team playoff in 2024, the top seeds would all host an on campus first round matchup (with #1 hosting #16, #2 vs. #15, #3 vs. #14, #4 vs. #13, #5 vs. #12, #6 vs. #11, #7 vs. #10, & #8 vs. #9) before moving on to the quarters, semis and National Championship. Below would be the 16-team playoff field for this year.

Mike’s World of Sports Veterans Day Weekend Edition:

It’s that time of the year. Leaves are on the ground, bucks are chasing does everywhere, squirrels are making a racket, chili and cornbread are on the stove, and College Football is getting down to the nitty gritty while College Basketball a week into the season. A bunch of games to look forward to this weekend.

Here are some under the radar key week 11 College Football to look forward to.

In the FCS Western Illinois will take on Indiana State in a battle between (0-9) teams from the Missouri Valley Conference. You can catch the game at 1:00pm/et on ESPN+.

Wofford will face The Citadel in another matchup of (0-9) teams. The Southern Conference will be at 2:00pm/et on ESPN+.

Florida A&M (8-1) host DII Independent Lincoln (PA) who is (0-11) on the season. Look for about a 50 point or so victory by the Rattlers.

In DII football action, #4 Slippery Rock (10-0) with a big game versus Kutztown (8-2) at noon/et.

Another big DIII game to keep an eye on Saturday is #16 SUNY Cortland (8-1) versus #14 Ithaca (8-1) at noon/et.

#12 Bemidji State (8-1) will face #20 Augustana University (SD) (9-1) at 2:00pm/et with postseason aspirations on the line.

#18 Virginia Union (9-1) takes on Fayetteville State (8-2) for the CIAA Football Championship at 3:00pm/et in Salem, VA.

In a battle between perfect and imperfect is the Colorado School of Mines (10-0) who are ranked #1 in all of DII football are facing Fort Lewis (0-10) at 2:00pm/et.

Southwestern Oklahoma State (0-10) will face rival Northwestern Oklahoma State (0-10) at 4:00pm/et in a battle for bragging rights between the winless rivals in their season finale.

North Central (9-0) ranked #1 overall in all of DIII football with a big game versus Augustana College (IL) (8-1) at 2:00pm/et.

The underrated game of the day in College Football might be the battle of unbeatens, as Whitworth (8-0) face 4th ranked Linfield (8-0) at 4:00pm/et. Despite being undefeated, Whitworth is the only undefeated team in DIII that is unranked. With a chip on their shoulder, it will be interesting to see how they respond on the road.

Anderson (IN) (0-9) and Manchester (0-9) will close out the season at 1:30pm/et with the hopes of finally getting their 1st win on the season in DIII play.

In Maryland, McDaniel College (0-9) hopes to get their 1st win of the season by upsetting their undefeated state rival Johns Hopkins (9-0) at 5:00pm/et in Baltimore, MD.

In December we have Army-Navy, but this weekend and on Veterans Day to boot is the Secretaries Cup between Merchant Marine (6-2) and the Coast Guard (5-4) at noon/et on ESPN+.

As far as in FBS action, #3 Michigan without suspended coach Jim Harbough head to Beaver Stadium to take on #10 Penn State Saturday at noon/et on FOX. Miami will look to upset #4 Florida State at 3:30pm/et on ABC. #18 Utah faces #5 Washington at 3:30pm/et on FOX. Rutgers will face #22 Iowa at 3:30pm/et on BTN with 10 points scored might be good enough to win in that one… #9 Ole Miss will hope to pull off the upset of #2 Georgia at 7:00pm/et on ESPN. Late night has #6 Oregon hosting USC at 10:30pm/et on FOX.

College Basketball wise you have a bunch of the big name schools going up against some smaller schools you probably have never heard of. On Saturday Longwood from the Big South Conference will host St. Mary’s at 2:30pm/et on ESPN+. No not the one out west who always makes the tourney, but the small school in Maryland. Vermont host Plattsburgh State Saturday at 7:00pm/et on ESPN+.

This weekend those random games are highlighted by Wichita State taking on Friends University on Sunday. Friends University is actually located in Wichita, KS. I am sure they will be pivoting quite a bunch in that game. You can watch Friends on TBS, I mean Nick at Night, I mean you can catch Friends Sunday at 2:00pm/et on ESPN+ versus Wichita State. Radford will host Eastern Mennonite Sunday at 4:30pm/et on ESPN+

On the women’s side on Saturday night Pepperdine host Caltech. The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, CA is a DIII school, and not a made of school the boys on The Big Bang Theory work at.

Soccer on Saturday in Europe is highlighted by Manchester United hosting Luton Town. Wrexham with a big matchup at home versus Gillingham. Real Madrid will kickoff at home with Valencia. Bayern Munich is home to FC Heidenheim 1846. VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund will get together, and Stade de Reims host Paris Saint-Germain.

In Major League Soccer action, Houston Dynamo FC and Real Salt Lake with a big game 3 matchup Saturday to advance in the MLS Playoffs, and on Sunday the Columbus Crew and Atlanta United face each other in a deciding game 3 matchup with hopes of advancing to the Conference Finals.

Week 10 of the NFL season is highlighted by the Jacksonville Jaguars (6-2) hosting the San Francisco 49ers (5-3) Sunday at 1:00pm/et on FOX. The new Cleveland Browns face the old Cleveland Browns as the Browns (5-3) head to Baltimore on Sunday to face the Ravens (7-2) in a big AFC North matchup at 1:00pm/et on FOX. The New York Giants hope to cover against the heavily favored Dallas Cowboys at 4:25pm/et on FOX. Dallas is favored by 17 heading into Sunday’s NFC East matchup.

College Basketball is back! Will be interesting to see how the season plays out once we get closer to March and the NCAA Tournament.
