"Ever since those reviews for 'Showgirls' (1995), it's like I was that woman in 'The Scarlet Letter'. Except that instead of having to wear the letter 'A' for adulteress, I was condemned to wear an 'S' for 'showgirl'."
Elizabeth Berkley was a teenage model for Elite before pursuing an acting career. She made her television film debut in 1987 with a role in the television film "Frog" and following this, made a number of guest appearances on several television shows. In 1989, at the age of seventeen, she auditioned for the role of Kelly Kapowski in "Saved by the Bell", but the producers of the show could not decide whether to cast her or Tiffani-Amber Thiessen. In the end, they created for Berkley the character Jessie Spano, a role she played from 1989 to 1993, as well as in both of the show's television film installments.
After leaving "Saved by the Bell" to pursue a film career, Berkley won the role of Nomi Malone, the lead character in the controversial Paul Verhoeven film "Showgirls". The s*x- and nudity-laden film was given a controversial NC-17 rating in the United States (the first big-budget film to receive this rating), was a box office bomb, and was widely panned by critics. Berkley was dropped by her agent; due to the negative fallout from the film other agents refused to take her telephone calls.
"First of all, to portray this woman any other way would be a lie. This is what she does. I mean, my feeling is s*xuality, people who have a problem with it are living in shame, so that's their problem. All I know is that this will help people feel more free about themselves, I think, and, um, I see nothing harmful in it. It's a wonderful message about going after what you want."
Verhoeven, in 2015: " 'Showgirls' certainly ruined the career of Elizabeth Berkley in a major way. It made my life more difficult, but not to the degree it did Elizabeth's. Hollywood turned their backs on her. If somebody has to be blamed, it should be me because I thought that it was interesting to portray somebody like that. I had hoped the end of the movie would explain why she acted that way, when it's revealed she has convictions linked with drugs, but that too turned out to be a big mistake. I asked Elizabeth to do all that, to be abrupt and to act in that way, but people have been attacking her about for that ever since. I did consider that people would think she had a borderline personality, but that was because her character had a history of drug abuse, so I tried to express that through her abruptness." Happy Birthday, Elizabeth Berkley!
