L'esclavage des biens meubles dans les Antilles danoises a duré de 1650 environ jusqu'au 3 juillet 1848, date à laquelle le gouverneur Peter von Scholten a publié une proclamation d'émancipation.

Malgré cela, le gouvernement danois a appliqué des règles qui ont maintenu les personnes en esclavage par contrat pendant encore deux ans.

En 1847, un plan d'émancipation progressive a été mis en place, libérant les enfants nés de travailleurs asservis et mettant fin à l'esclavage en 1859. Cependant, les anciens esclaves ont continué à travailler dans des conditions difficiles dans les mêmes plantations, ce qui a donné lieu à une manifestation le 1er octobre 1878 à Sainte-Croix.

Cette manifestation, menée par Mary Thomas, Axeline Elizabeth Salomon et Mathilda McBean, a dégénéré en émeute, faisant près de 100 morts et d'importants dégâts matériels. Connues sous le nom des « trois reines », ces femmes ont été emprisonnées mais ont été honorées par la suite par des monuments, dont la statue « I Am Queen Mary » à Copenhague, reconnaissant leur rôle dans la lutte contre l'oppression.

Chattel slavery in the Danish West Indies lasted from around 1650 until July 3, 1848, when Governor Peter von Scholten issued an emancipation proclamation. Despite this, the Danish government enforced rules that kept people enslaved by contracts for another two years.

In 1847, a gradual emancipation plan was introduced, freeing children born to enslaved laborers and ending all slavery by 1859. However, former slaves continued working under harsh conditions on the same plantations, leading to a protest on October 1, 1878, on St. Croix.

This protest, led by Mary Thomas, Axeline Elizabeth Salomon, and Mathilda McBean, escalated into a riot, resulting in nearly 100 deaths and significant property damage. Known as "The Three Queens," these women were imprisoned but later honored with monuments, including the "I Am Queen Mary" statue in Copenhagen, recognizing their role in the fight against oppression.

La Journée de la libération du Rwanda, célébrée le 4 juillet, marque la fin du génocide rwandais en 1994 et la victoire du Front patriotique rwandais (FPR) dirigé par Paul Kagame.

Cette journée commémore les efforts fructueux du FPR pour mettre fin au génocide, qui a entraîné la mort d'environ 800 000 personnes, principalement des Tutsis. Le jour de la libération
symbolise le début de la reconstruction nationale, de la réconciliation et de la mise en place d'un nouveau gouvernement engagé dans l'unité et le développement.

Il s'agit d'une fête nationale importante au Rwanda, qui reflète le chemin parcouru par le pays entre la dévastation et le rétablissement.

La bataille d'Ulundi, qui s'est déroulée le 4 juillet 1879, a marqué la fin décisive de la guerre anglo-zouloue et l'indépendance du royaume zoulou.

Les forces britanniques, utilisant une formation carrée défensive avec une puissance de feu supérieure, ont battu de manière décisive les guerriers zoulous menés par le roi Cetshwayo. Les Britanniques infligent de lourdes pertes aux Zoulous et détruisent la capitale zouloue, Ulundi.

The Battle of Ulundi, fought on July 4, 1879, marked the decisive end of the Anglo-Zulu War and the Zulu Kingdom's independence. British forces, employing a defensive square formation with superior firepower, decisively defeated the Zulu warriors led by King Cetshwayo.

The British inflicted heavy casualties on the Zulus and destroyed the Zulu capital, Ulundi. This battle effectively ended the Zulu resistance, leading to the capture and exile of King Cetshwayo and the subsequent annexation of Zululand by the British.

The battle symbolizes the clash between traditional African forces and European colonial armies, marking a significant moment in the history of British imperial expansion in southern Africa.

Les entreprises de technologie de la santé fondées par des femmes en Afrique ont levé 52 millions de dollars l'année dernière, un bond significatif par rapport aux 2 millions de dollars de 2022, représentant 31% des investissements totaux, selon le "2023 Roundup" de Salient
Advisory: Investments in African Healthtech" de Salient Advisory.

Cette poussée a été stimulée par d'importants cycles de financement pour des entreprises comme Kasha, Dawi Clinics, Maisha Meds et Chefaa, qui ont représenté collectivement 75 % du financement total levé par des femmes fondatrices.

Yomi Kazeem, de Salient Advisory, considère cette tendance comme un signe prometteur d'une plus grande inclusivité dans le paysage africain du financement des technologies de la santé, ce qui pourrait permettre aux fondatrices de jouer un rôle essentiel dans la transformation des systèmes de santé sur le continent. Le secteur africain des technologies de la santé a fait preuve de résilience avec 167 millions de dollars de fonds propres, de subventions et de financements par emprunt, malgré une baisse globale de 2 % des investissements.

Le nombre d'opérations a augmenté de 17 % pour atteindre 145, bien que la taille moyenne des opérations ait diminué de 15 % pour atteindre 1,1 million de dollars. Les subventions ont été importantes, représentant 52 % des transactions mais seulement 7 % du financement total. Zillah Waminaje, de Salient Advisory, a souligné le rôle stratégique des subventions dans la validation des modèles d'entreprise et la stimulation de la croissance.

Women-founded health tech companies in Africa raised $52 million last year, a significant leap from $2 million in 2022, representing 31% of total investments, according to Salient Advisory’s "2023 Roundup: Investments in African Healthtech".

This surge was driven by large funding rounds for companies like Kasha, Dawi Clinics, Maisha Meds, and Chefaa, which collectively accounted for 75% of the total funding raised by women founders.

Yomi Kazeem of Salient Advisory highlights this trend as a promising sign of increasing inclusivity in the African healthtech funding landscape, potentially leading to women founders playing a pivotal role in transforming health systems across the continent.

The African healthtech sector showed resilience with $167 million in equity, grants, and debt funding, despite a 2% overall decline in investments. The number of deals increased by 17% to 145, though the average deal size fell by 15% to $1.1 million.

Grants were significant, making up 52% of deals but only 7% of total funding. Zillah Waminaje from Salient Advisory emphasized the strategic role of grants in validating business models and fostering growth.

The report also noted increased funding activity in Nigeria, Kenya, and Egypt, with equity investments dominating the landscape and substantial pre-seed, seed-stage, and Series A or higher stage funding.
