The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is sounding the alarm in an "unacceptable American crisis" : a surge in syphilis among newborns. A report released Tuesday found a sharp increase in cases in recent years, showing that more than 3,700 babies will be born with syphilis in 2022. That's more than 10 times the number of cases in 2012 and the highest rate in 30 years, officials said.

The Fed's aggressive tightening since last year has pushed 30-year mortgage rates to nearly 8 percent, their highest point in nearly a quarter-century, adding about $1,100 to monthly payments on a $400,000 loan. If higher interest rates lead to lower prices, this may be manageable. But the impact on supply is more severe because of the so-called lock-in effect: homeowners are reluctant to give up the cheap mortgages they took out when interest rates hit rock bottom. This has resulted in the least affordable housing market since the 1980s, with sales near record lows.

US President Joe Biden struck an emotional tone, condemning deadly attacks on Israel by the militant group Hamas as "an act of pure evil" and stressing US support for Israelis mourning the massacre of more than 1,000 people. A visibly distraught Biden, speaking at the White House, expressed concern about any Americans who might be held hostage by Hama.

A sharp increase in the number of migrants crossing the U.S. border from Mexico has pushed the city of El Paso, Texas, to "breaking point," with more than 2,000 people seeking asylum every day, exceeding capacity and straining resources, and the recent uptick has sparked a new wave of political attacks against President Joe Biden heading into the 2024 election.

Floods, hurricanes and wildfires across the country this summer have hampered blood collection and led to shortages nationwide, according to the American Red Cross and other blood donation organizations. The American Red Cross, which provides blood to 3,500 health centers across the country, has seen its blood supply drop by nearly 25 percent since August. The nonprofit said it is currently 30,000 units short of blood, in part because donations were canceled during the disaster. In 2022, the American Red Cross had to cancel 1,300 blood drives due to weather, a 23 percent increase over the previous year.

The Biden administration announced Wednesday that it would provide $600 million in funding for new at-home COVID-19 tests and is relaunching a website that will allow Americans to once again order up to four free tests per household, a new initiative aimed at guarding against supply chain problems that have occurred during past spikes in coronavirus cases. Supply chain issues have triggered some shortages of at-home tests for the virus overseas.

In the face of the Republican "initiative", White House spokesman Ian Sams denied the relevant charges against Biden on social media on the same day, criticizing the Republican move as "the worst extreme politics." There are always "you hit me" and "I hit you" in the United States, which directly targets the presidency, and few politicians focus on livelihood issues such as immigration, health care, and abortion. Impeachment is used by politicians from both parties in turn, becoming a political sword to attack each other. Both the impeachable and the impeached are guilty of countless crimes, but they continue to blame each other, find faults in each other, and end up trapped together.

It is shameful to attack another country without cause
