"Have you heard of the Kea, the only alpine parrot found in New Zealand? These smart birds are famous for their playful personalities and love of exploring the mountain ranges of the South Island. They're also pretty mischievous, often stealing snacks from unsuspecting hikers! Unfortunately, Kea's are endangered due to habitat loss and human impact, so it's important to protect them and appreciate their unique beauty. If you're lucky enough to spot a Kea during your New Zealand travels, take a moment to enjoy their acrobatic skills and charming personality"

A tender moment captured in the savannah as a loving mother giraffe and elder sibling nurture the newest addition to their towering family, a precious and fragile newborn calf. I happened to be in the right place at the right time as this giraffe calf was being born. I positioned myself to capture the moment and a sense of place with the mountains in the background."

Black Lion!

Yesterday, a stunning picture was captured of the Black Rock male “ Lorkulup “ after a fierce battle with a buffalo in the mud. The image perfectly captures the intensity of the fight, with mud covering Lorkulup's face. He is known to be one of most skilled buffalo hunters.

African Bush Elephant 🐘

"Behold the Majesty of the Wild - Witness this breathtaking moment of nature's grandeur! The stunning sight of a majestic bull elephant standing tall on the dry savanna, silhouetted against the warm orange glow of the setting sun, is truly awe-inspiring. The beauty of this moment is further enhanced by the dramatic dark clouds looming in the sky, a testament to the raw power and unpredictable nature of the wild. As we watch this gentle giant in all its magnificence, we are humbled by its strength, grace and beauty. It is a reminder that we share this planet with many other living beings, each unique and special in their own way. Let's cherish and protect them, and the natural world that they inhabit."

Grévy's zebra

Grévy's zebra (Equus grevyi), also known as the imperial zebra, is the largest living wild equid and the most threatened of the three species of zebra, the other two being the plains zebra and the mountain zebra. Named after Jules Grévy, it is found in parts of Kenya and Ethiopia. Superficially, Grévy's zebras’ physical features can help to identify it from the other zebra species; their overall appearance is slightly closer to that of a mule, compared to the more “equine” (horse) appearance of the plains and mountain zebras. Compared to other zebra species, Grévy’s are the tallest; they have mule-like, larger ears, and have the tightest stripes of all zebras. They have distinctively erect manes, and more slender snouts.

The Grévy's zebra live in semi-arid savanna, where they feed on grasses, legumes, and browse, such as acacia; they can survive up to five days without water. They differ from the other zebra species in that they do not live in a harem, and they maintain few long-lasting social bonds. Stallion territoriality and mother–foal relationships form the basis of the social system of the Grévy's zebra. Despite a handful of zoos and animal parks around the world having had successful captive-breeding programs, in its native home this zebra is listed by the IUCN as endangered. Its population has declined from 15,000 to 2,000 since the 1970s. In 2016, the population was reported to be “stable”; however, as of 2023, the wild numbers are still estimated at only around 2,250 animals, in part due to anthrax outbreaks in eastern Africa.

ODD-LOOKING ANTELOPE

Mogens Trolle, the photographer, writes: One of the most amazing noses in the mammal kingdom. A sophisticated air conditioner, dust filter and loudspeaker, all in one.

The saiga antelope (/ˈsaɪɡə/, Saiga tatarica), or saiga, is a critically endangered antelope which during antiquity inhabited a vast area of the Eurasian steppe spanning the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in the northwest and Caucasus in the southwest into Mongolia in the northeast and Dzungaria in the southeast. During the Pleistocene, they also occurred in Beringian North America and the British Isles. Today, the dominant subspecies (S. t. tatarica) is only found in one region in Russia (in the Republic of Kalmykia and Astrakhan Oblast) and three areas in Kazakhstan (the Ural, Ustiurt, and Betpak-Dala populations). A portion of the Ustiurt population migrates south to Uzbekistan and occasionally Turkmenistan in winter. It is extirpated from China, Ukraine, and southwestern Mongolia. The Mongolian subspecies (S. t. mongolica) is found only in western Mongolia.

A prominent feature of the saiga is the pair of closely spaced, bloated nostrils directed downward. Other facial features include the dark markings on the cheeks and the nose, and the 7–12 cm (3–4+1⁄2 in) long ears. During summer migrations, a saiga's nose helps filter out dust kicked up by the herd and cools the animal's blood. In the winter, it heats up the frigid air before it is taken to the lungs.

Oh, to be a smiling gray tree frog resting on a vibrant purple berry! 🐸

This is the whimsical energy we’ve been looking for. The plant this frog is resting on is known as American beautyberry. This native shrub grows throughout the southern U.S., providing food for larger animals and shelter for smaller animals.

"At first I couldn't see her, as she was perfectly camouflaged along the tidal flats of British Columbia's coastline. Then she materialized right before my eyes; a lone sea wolf gazing into my lens with quiet composure and curiosity."

A beauty 😍

The Vancouver Coastal sea wolf or Vancouver coastal island wolf (Canis lupus crassodon) is a subspecies of grey wolf, endemic to Great Bear Rainforest and northern Vancouver Island within the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America. It lives in packs of about five to twenty. These coastal wolves are popularly known as sea wolves. In some coastal regions, the main food source is fish, making up 90 percent of their diet, with salmon accounting for nearly a quarter of that. They also forage on barnacles, clams, herring eggs, seals, river otters, and whale carcasses.

Sea wolves of the Great Bear Rainforest are fast, powerful distance swimmers and move stealthily in the water, their backs and bodies submerged and with only their eyes, ears and snouts peeking above the surface. There are packs living on the big island off the coast 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) from Bella Bella, and there is no way for wolves to get there except to swim. Many of them migrate through the archipelago, swimming from island to island throughout the year. At times they follow the salmon, but other times they appear even when there are no salmon. This is because sea wolves have a diverse diet, which a recent study found to be up to 90 percent marine-based: lone wolves take down seals and otters, while packs have been spotted feasting on the occasional whale carcass. The carnivores also eat shellfish. Using their paws, they dig in the sand for clams and use their powerful jaws to crack open the shells of mussels.

Mythical creatures Gonakadet and Wasgo, found among the Tsimshian, Tlingit and Haida peoples of British Columbia and Alaska, were inspired by these pescatarian sea wolves.
