If you have studied aerodynamics or fluid dynamics, you can easily explain what is lift. However, it might not be easy to correctly explain how lift is created. The question about how lift is produced may look simple and easy but the popular explanations found on internet are ambiguous and misleading. This post is about some popular misleading theories, how they fail and some correct explanations.
Theories of lift generation are often based either on Bernoulli’s principle or Newton’s laws of motion. Both Bernoulli’s principle and Newton’s laws of motion are without any doubt flawless, however, misleading interpretations of these laws are made to explain generation of lift.

CFD analysis is one of the most important skills one should learn if you are aspiring to be a good Mechanical or Aerospace engineer. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical analysis and data structures to analyze and solve problems that involve fluid flows. Computers are used to perform the calculations required to simulate the free-stream flow of the fluid, and the interaction of the fluid (liquids and gases) with surfaces defined by boundary conditions. With high-speed supercomputers, better solutions can be achieved, and are often required to solve the largest and most complex problems.

If you know about the Nomenclature of NACA 4 digit airfoil but you are wondering how you can plot it using MATLAB or any other programming tools then this post is for you. A detailed explanation about NACA 4 digit airfoil has been presented in one of our previous posts. Since you’ve come here, I assume that you know the basics of NACA 4 digit airfoil and also the fundamentals of MATLAB.

The NACA airfoils are airfoil shapes for aircraft wings developed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The shape of the NACA airfoils is described using a series of digits following the word “NACA”. The parameters in the numerical code can be entered into some analytical equations to precisely generate the cross-section of the airfoil and calculate its properties. In the early periods of aircraft developments, aircraft designers used to design the shape of airfoil randomly based on intuition or some experiments.

A different term is used for the electronics system in aircraft which is ‘Avionics’. Avionics is also known as flight control system because it controls various aspects of aircraft.

Avionics is the science of electronics used on aircraft, artificial satellites and spacecraft. Here, we are talking about aircraft avionics and the types of equipment used. If you are interested in the historical development of fluid dynamics and aerodynamics, then you must already know the importance of the term ‘boundary layer’. The concept of boundary layer is something that resolved a century long D’Alembert’s Paradox and revolutionized the field of aerodynamics. Introduction of thin boundary layer theory made Ludwig Prandtl known as the father of modern aerodynamics. Today, every fluid flow problem revolves around the concept of boundary layer.

A boundary layer is the layer of fluid in the immediate vicinity of a bounding surface where the effects of viscosity are significant. The origin of the boundary layer theory can be traced to an investigation conducted by Prandtl (1904) concerning the motion of a fluid with very small viscosity. Boundary layer is a region in flow field inside which fluid flows with a higher relative velocity or a layer inside which a relative motion between fluid particle may exist.
