I finished Rawhide Down today. I used to read constantly. Since becoming a detective, I’ve read perhaps three or four books in any one year period. I listen to audiobooks almost daily, but I don’t think it has the same impact. My goal for next year is to read 52 books. I picked up my first book for the year at the Nixon Library yesterday and found that the author had signed the cover page! Can’t do that with an audiobook. Drop your recommendations below ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Tomorrow at 0400 EST, my episode with .mow will drop. I encourage you all to give it a listen. Jason has a wealth of experience from two agencies split by 13 months in Afghanistan as a defense contractor. Jason suffered critical injuries to both of his legs in a foot pursuit (spoiler alert: he still won) and spent years healing from wounds both visible and not. Jason’s story is powerful, and I am very thankful to him for having taken the time to speak with me.

My aunt is an author. At my grandmother’s celebration of life, she asked me if I was still writing, as I used to love writing short stories. I told her I had a goal to write and publish a book before my 40th birthday (still a long ways off), and I had begun work on a murder/espionage thriller novel set in wartime London. I got these in the mail today with a note offering encouragement and inspiration. It’s slow going, and I don’t write every day, but I do write as things come to mind and when I have the odd hour of quiet time around the house. Big shout out to whose books I devoured in my early twenties (and still do to this day), for inspiring another cop to write starting way back in 2016, and to for reigniting that fire of creativity after I read The Terminal List. Also, for taking time to talk to me about the importance of outlining while on the range a few weeks ago.

Six years ago today, I realized my dream of becoming a police officer. It’s been a hell of a ride so far. I’ve seen and experienced an entire spectrum of emotions-from adrenaline highs that left me with the shakes as I came down, to previously unknown lows like waking up to a text that one of our own was murdered, or trying to pay attention to someone telling me their life story while simultaneously hearing over the radio that an officer passed away in a hospital three minutes away from me. I’ve been pi**ed off, saddened and doubled over laughing all in the span of an afternoon. I’ve seen courage defined before my very eyes, and I’ve also seen the true evil this world can offer. At the end of the day, I wouldn’t change a damn thing. Cheers to the peacemakers, the hitters, and the guardian angels out there. It’s been a privilege to work with you all.

Six years ago today, I realized my dream of becoming a police officer. My brother-in-law presented my badge to me, and my wife pinned me. It’s been a hell of a ride so far. Got to do some advanced first aid training at work today and learn about wound packing and tourniquet applications. The medic that taught us used pig parts that had actual GSWs. Very eye opening experience. We rounded it out with range time and downed officer drills. This was truly some of the best training I’ve received.

I got to see Rafael Tovar and Terry Sullivan speak today at the 5th annual SAKI conference in Scottsdale today. Rafael was a lead detective into the investigation of John Wayne Gacy in the 70s. Terry Sullivan was a member of the prosecution team. It was really cool to hear about old school police work, and I enjoyed listening to Rafael as much as I enjoyed at last year’s conference. Gacy was convicted of 33 murders. While no substantive evidence exists to support any additional homicides, Tovar said when he asked Gacy how many people he really killed, Gacy replied “45 sounds like a good number.” All 33 bodies were recovered, but five remain unidentified. is still working to identify the five unnamed victims. I encourage all s*x crimes investigators to reach out to Cesar Tirado at the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to inquire about attending next year. The conferences are getting bigger and I’m sure next year will be amazing. I was also very excited to listen to my friend speak about her experience and the work that she is doing to further Kayleigh’s Law. The conference is held about this time each year. Cold case investigators in Maricopa County should get to know the SAKI team, as there is grant money that can be used to test kits from cold cases and also to aid in furthering the investigation when travel may be required.

We walked around The Alamo today. You can’t help but feel something in your chest knowing how many people died defending this spot. Overall, seeing is an important part of American history that I recommend to everyone who has an interest.

*Link in bio* This is Mike. Mike is a local gunsmith, and has been my go to guy since meeting him in 2013. On July 8th, 2022, an ATF agent walked into Magnum Mike's in Phoenix and began a compliance inspection. During the inspection, the agent found a single clerical error from May, 2021. This minor infraction had been re-written to be AN AUTOMATIC LICENSE REVOCATION. He's being threatened with closure for something that is not only incredibly minor, and it wasn't even changed in the ATF guidelines at all until October of 2021. The legal fees have just about eaten up Mike's savings already, and the proceedings are scheduled for February. ATF is trickling out communications every couple of weeks since this began, which adds additional financial hardship, as the attorney has to be contacted with each notification.

amen. For years, ill-informed people have called for an end to qualified immunity for officers. When I’ve spoken with people about QI, I always mention that judges and DAs get absolute immunity, meaning that they are never held accountable for their actions. The crime epidemic in this country can end, but it needs to start with holding judges, lawmakers and DAs accountable. If someone dies because some judge set bail for a felony at some stupidly low amount, that judge should absolutely be open to civil liability. Don’t like it? Welcome to the jungle, we’ll be your tour guide.

My grandmother was born in April of 1925 in Londonderry. She survived the Blitz while serving her rural community in Kent, England as a dispatcher of sorts for the local fire brigade. When the bombs fell and the drone of the Luftwaffe bombers faded, she and another girl ran around to the firefighters houses to give the all clear and tell them where the fires were. She and my grandfather married in 1945 while he was in the British Army and immigrated to Canada after the war. They became US citizens a few years later and moved to Michigan, and then onto California. I never my my grandfather, but I was lucky enough to spend 32 years with my grandmother. She wished me happy birthday two weeks ago, but told me she didn’t really recommend living to 97 because she wasn’t having fun anymore. After almost 40 years apart, she went to be with my grandpa today at about 8am. When my dad told her that grandpa would be waiting for her with a cup of tea, she smiled and said “he better bloody make it right.” I love you, Grandma. I will miss you, but I know I’ll see you again some day.

Have joined the with a gift certificate good for one free pair of boots from Altama, Original SWAT, CAPPS or Smith and Wesson! Getting their email made my day! I’ve worn my Altama Urban shoes almost every day for two years. I’ve got a pair of Maritime boots as well, but my urbans have seen untold thousands of miles. From the California coast to the ancient, well worn cobbles of London, from ICAC search warrants to patrol work, I cannot say enough good things about Altama.

The is accepting donations to give to the three winners. There will be a grand prize winner and two runner-ups. The point of the GAW is simple: provide training, gear and maybe a little bit of swag to officers who work for agencies that make them foot the bill for their armor, uniforms, boots, belts and other necessary equipment. I need your help to make this year better than last year. Analytics are everything in the realm of social media marketing. Please share this post, listen to the show, and encourage people to follow along here on IG. If you are interested in donating, please send me a message or email me at [email protected]. The nomination period for full time sworn police officers will open the second week of November.

Perspective is important. As I flirt with the notion of going back to school for my master’s degree, I find myself wondering if I’m biting off more than I can chew. Between family, work, and this show, how much more can I fit in. Reading Ghost by and learning about his work in helped me to realize that I can absolutely do more. Fred completed his DSS training and was then ushered off to a windowless room behind a blue door with two other agents and told to stop terror attacks. He raised a family and was routinely called away from home for long periods of time, but he made it work. Beirut Rules will be next up on my reading list, but if you want a glimpse behind the curtain of counter-terrorism in the days where they were making it up as they went along, look no further than Ghost.

11/09/2022

I was ten years old when my dad woke me up to tell me the World Trade Center had been attacked. I didn’t even know what the WTC was. I went to school and looked at my teacher, Brooklyn native, and asked her if we were going to die. She read me the riot act, rightfully so, and made sure I understood that I was safe in her room, and plenty of men and women stood ready to keep it that way. She spent the rest of the day keeping us occupied and calling her family back home. She knew people who died, but she still showed up to teach us. My life goal became to serve in some capacity or another, and I ultimately chose to wear a badge and serve my community. The firefighters and cops who ran toward the towers weren’t bitching about city councils, rude citizens, supervisors. They set an example for those of us who have come after them. Citizens like Todd Beamer set an example for all of us as to what an American is. He didn’t ask people who they voted for, he didn’t search for clout and recognition. He stood up to evil in the face of certain death and he made the fu***ng effort with like minded people. I get incensed with Americans who refuse to acknowledge 9/11 all these years later. 9/11 shaped a country and a generation. The loss of American lives is still staggering. Everyday Americans exhibited acts of ferocious heroism. We owe it to the people who died that day, and every day since as a result of illness and injury, to remember them and honor them. It is our responsibility to educate those who are coming into careers of service about 9/11. The day is upon us where a newly minted 21 year old police officer or firefighter was born into that post-9/11 world. Remind them of why we do what we do. Let’s roll.
